Hmmm, don't remember Doc Weildon, what year would that be?

Seems his name was spelled Wheildon and played his last game for Fitzroy in 89 magoos GF, then dropped out of footy after getting run over by a taxi whilst p155ed

As WYL said, no problem with you embracing it, whatever your reason. It's your opinion.

As for the "Invincible Whites" rationalisation, for me personally it has no currency or great meaning. Just a byline in history as is "Fuschia's" and many other arcane aspects of MFC's history. I do still have a big soft-spot for "Redlegs" and wish we could have two nicknames, but that would not be very practical. At least it lives on in the membership group.

That stance is, as you point to, hypocritical. You can embrace history only so long as it fits a narrative.

Other than red and blue, the other colour (or non-colour) associated with the MFC is white.

It is our history and WYL conspiracies aside - the club should keep a white strip going forward.

No No, I don't want to rewrite history, nor not respect the heritage. I embrace and devour it all

That doesn't mean that I want to restore or return to all aspects our heritage. A good example I gave before was the Fuschias.

You're welcome to make a heritage connection to white, I grant it has a certain logic, and it is an interesting tidbit, it just doesn't do anything for me re a predomoinately white clash jumper. Nearly every team now has a white clash jumper, from a distance they all look the same, so where is the "we are Melbourne" look?

Were the other clubs who wear a white strip were named the 'invincible whites' at a point in their history?

We should take ownership over the history you love so much and tell everyone why we are wearing white over, say, silver...

you can embrace whatever you like RPFC, no problem with that, just don't expect me to ever do it.

And sorry i didn't quite follow your logic with wearing a white strip against St.kilda, not being nasty-just general fogginess. can you elaborate??

They wear red and black - we wear red and dark blue. They clash.

And, as an addendum to this post, I would add that the argument that 'we have had it this way since time began' holds little water with me in the current day as there are few one-on-one contests anymore, the game has evolved where rolling scrums and fast handball movement have become large features. Both of these spectacles, if you can call the rolling scrums spectacles, are better disseminated, and no doubt executed looking at Clint Batram's problem with the 3rd team playing in our close loss to the bullies, by clearly defined and contrasted jumpers.

you are being silly now. I think we have done the Invincible Whites thing to death

I'm out on this aspect

One last attempt . . .

Collingwood have a tradition/heritage of white, so do the Bulldogs and the Swans and St.Kilda and North Melbourne.

How does our wearing white somehow claim some heritage "ownership" and give us some unique identity

I think even the Labor party would struggle to spin this one

I think if anyone is struggling it is you, in regards to making a coherent argument.

They wear red and black - we wear red and dark blue. They clash.

St.kilda Also wear a lot of white, which is deemed to be the designated neutral colour, so why introduce more white into the game, with the MFC also wearing a WHITE guernsey. Sorry RPFC, that is a thin arguement.

Clint Bartram's handball error was made because the Umpires were wearing the same Pink as the MFC for that game. The AFL was warned about but in its usual dictorial way made no attempt to change anything. Dont blame the Red & Blue Jumper on that one.

Footscray should embrace wearing Red White & Blue because they are the colours the Knifepoint Westies wear.

The MFC wear Red & Blue as our mighty club song says.

I can't believe we finally chalked up a win in the white. How long since we had done that..?

I think our best previous effort was when we wore it against the Doggies? Not a win but damn close.

We have worn a predominantly white strip in the past and we will in the future. Adelaide, Brisbane, Hawthorn, and WCE supporters can hold your argument and say that white, which is the predominant colour on their away strips, isn't apart of their history but not the MFC.

If you think bringing up what we wore over a hundred years ago as irrelevant spin then you would also be opposed to our claim to be the oldest footy club and our inclusion of 1858 in our new emblem.

You need to stop caring about what the AFL 'wants' - it doesn't have to be neutral to us.

As for the StK strip and our strip - I cannot believe you are arguing that our white strip makes it more a clash than our traditional strip.

Finally, you went right past the Batram incident. He saw a similar colour and handpassed to it. Umpire, player or runner - players are confused by similar strips. It obviously occurs.

Haha, very droll. Keep drawing that bow. Actually, you could be onto something, lets also bring back jumpers made from chamois with lace-up necks . . . . mmmm ;)

You really believe our WHITE strip clashes less with St.kilda than our Trad Jumper??? Sorry mate i will never agree to that.

How did i bypass the Bartram incident? i stated what happened.

I shall always be watching the AFL, because i do not trust them, ever since Wayne Jackson was in charge.

Ever since Wayne Jackson - what about Sir Kenneth Luke, Alan Aylett, and any of the others. AFL (when it was the VFL) were not much different in relative terms. But ther best example does go back to Luke's time, when VFL park was built to break the influence of the custodians of the MCG and in particular, their football team. No club is bigger than the AFL. But that's another topic.

The topic is the "white stripe".

Interestingly and without my initiating it, some friends of mine (Richmond, St.Kilda and Hawthorn)have been discussing the same topic on Facebook.

Even more interesting is their mutual dislike of an "away" stripe - especially those, who like ours are a radical departure and feature a lot of WHITE.

Our jumper doesn't have a stripe.

Our jumper doesn't have a stripe.

Very funny.

I am just using what seems to be the pc terminology for this. To me they will always be "jumpers", anyway.

Why can't we have a predominantly blue alternative guernsey/shorts/socks and a predominantly red alternative guernsey/shorts/socks, depending on the opposition.

I don't have the time to whip one up on the computer now, but maybe the same as we have now, but just a red outline of the "V" on out jumper on a blue jumper, and vice-versa on a red jumper.

The teams we currently have a clash with when playing away are who? Adelaide (we wear red), Brisbane (blue), Carlton (red), Essendon (red), Fremantle (red), Sydney (blue), West Coast (red), Bulldogs (red).

What the AFL needs to do is grow some balls and say that all teams have the right to wear there traditional/current home uniform in home games, and opposition sides must have however many alternative uniforms approved so that they have a uniform to wear against every side that doesn't clash.

Does make some good points...

After the unveiling of the new emblem I was thinking what about our traditional jumper with the rules of the game written over the dark blue in white?

Very out there but yeah could work??

That'd be wicked. For next years heritage match maybe?

Why bother about the facts when you can just spew vitriole??

Pretty sure we weren't wearing red & blue in 1857 Ralphy. We weren't "The Invincible Whites" because of our red & blue guernsey.

I just found a great article by longtime MFC supporter Ralph Horowitz on the issue of our clash jumper:

http://www.backpagelead.com.au/afl/2084-this-heart-beats-true-for-the-red-and-blue

He makes some good points IMO!

Well at least i know Ralph Horowitz and i think alike.

All you people who "Support" that insipid white thing we are forced to wear by the AFL dictators...Read the Article very carefully..Don't ever tell me to be satisfied supporting a FOOTSCRAY jumper again.

We are not alone

Another point of view for your interest

Red and Blue till death do us part

Edit: fixed up link (I think)

You Beat me to it DC, well done. The Fire of Rage is growing-People power will erase these insipid diluted white uniforms from our AFL-it will take time, but will be done.

Anybody who cannot decipher a Melbourne Red & Blue Jumper is either not a true supporter or it's a sign they need laser Surgery.

Yes you are correct, Jack Hamilton & Allen Aylett bled the VFL dry by 1986. But it was that South Aussie [censored] Wayne Jackson who really accellerated the Process of what we are left with now..(Etihad Stadium built in the wrong direction!!!)

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.
