Joel Wilkinson's athletics background is showing through and I think he'll be a bolter.

Smedts, Harper and Heppel all performing well, albeit not unexpected.

It's worth mentioning that Brad Harvey broke the record for the 20m sprint earlier in the day before Wilkinson broke it again.

BP has written a brief summary of Day One of the Draft Combine on the MFC website.

Day 1 - NAB AFL Draft Combine

The intersting part was whom they have had interviews with thus far.

Out of the 12 - Kieran Harper, Billy Smedts, Jack Darling, Brodie Smith, Blayne Wilson, Tom Lynch and Lucas Cook have been interviewed.

Thats 3 Medium,Defenders (Wilson, Smedts, Smith), 3 Key Forwards (Darling, Lynch, Cook) and a Medium Forward (Harper).

While its only a small snapshot of the 40-45 inteveiws that BP will undertake I find it very intersting the mix matches the needs that many of us also percieve as a problem.

Maybe we are in tune with our needs afterall those being,

A Good medium back, who can set us up and release Grimes in the Midfield and a Key Position Forward.

This draft is shaping up well, and I believe it'll be one of Lynch or Cook for 12 and a Defender with out next pick.

Classy Gun forwards are harder to come by and BP & Co's decision to bypass a KPF in last years draft looks a smart choice with the KPF on offer deep into this years pool.

I agree.

Incredibl7, only 3 KP players were drafted in the top 20 last year. Butcher @ 8, Tahlia @ 13 and Griffiths @ 19. All 3 are lightyears away from consistent football, assuming any of them get to that level anyways. If we would have drafted a tall in the first round last year we would have been paying way over the odds. I'm very happy with Gysberts and Tapscott.

To put that into perspective:

2006 draft had 12 talls in the top 20 (incredible draft for talls, including Frawley, JReiwoldt, B.Reid, N.Brown, Gumby, Hansen, Leunberger)

2007 draft had 9 talls in the top 20

2008 draft had 9 talls in the top 20

2009 draft had 3 talls in the top 20

Conclusion- last year's draft had dud talls. We were right to take 4 midfielders, and our midfield will benefit big time in a couple of years.

I also definitely agree that the players we are interviewing is indicative of the types of players we are looking for draft.

Our 2 major needs from this draft are:

1. a genuine key forward to add to Watts & Jurrah (Lynch, Cook & Darling the 3 obvious options)

2. a classy half back flanker with good kicking skills and good defensive skills (we have the talls in defence, we are currently playing Bruce and Grimes. Bruce won't go on forever, Grimes needs to be released in the midfield, and other options like Cheney and Strauss aren't much chop. Billy Smedts or Heppel are the 2 most obvious options)

Something to consider, that I touched on in another thread, is the inclusion of compensation picks.

Even with this draft being compromised, many of the clubs have recognized the strength & depth of this draft and are strogly considering using their compensation picks this year, even though they will be pushed back beyond pick 25 rather than pick 16 in a normal year.

Obviously, not having to wait before retooling is another positive.

This means our 2nd round pick could be pushed back another 6 or so places.

Just something to consider.

Also, I was under the impression that priority picks were not in existence for this year and the next.

I know some WC supporters who seem to think they will receive one at the end of the first round along with Brisbane.

Seems a good type but more of what we already have. Does it add any weight that the club go to the trouble of penning an article about him?

I don't think we're any chance to take Jed Lamb and I doubt Shaun Atley will still be available.

Looks like my dream of getting Tom Lynch is becoming more and more of a longshot.

Atley would have to slide, and i'd be happy with Smedts, Darling or Caddy.

Dion Prestia looks a likely type, but just doesn't seem to have the scope for improvement that others do.

Would love to get him with our 3rd round pick, but I think any earlier would be too much.

I would be very happy with any of the following:

1. Jack Darling - 1st pref. Massive 'potential' written all over him. Could be anything. Power 191cm forward. Worth the punt IMO.

2. Tom Lynch - 198cm forward. Very mobile for a KPF, good mark, good hands and good skills.

3. Shaun Atley - Great acceleration and #1 for tackles in U18 Champ's. 188cm mid.

3. Jed Lamb - X Factor and absolute freak around goals. Kicked 44 goals this year. 181cm small forward.

4. Lucas Cook - 194cm mobile forward who needs to fill out, but has mobility, good skills, good hands and good pressure.

We need to go best available and I reckon Jack Darling is that man. It just happens that we need a key forward.

You misread the post Haydo.

Cook would be going too early at pick 12. I think he'll possibly still be there at 32.

And Lamb is a lot like Maric was at the same level.

The standout aspect is their kicking ability. Maybe you can't remember that far back, but Maric was also rated the best kick in the draft and somebody who doesn't miss when kicking for goal. What he has done since coming to AFL level is irrelevant.

You say we could use Atley's speed but Caddy tested incredibly well at the Draft Combine.
