Not that sandilands fella.

Kyle Cheney, Its time, Kyle. Cheney for the defense! A south australian lad.

Agree, bring him in for Bartram next week.

his not from south australia. warracknabeel boy

He's too slow and his disposal isn't better than Bartram's, I can't believe the footy department gave him another contract. I'm willing to write him off as a spud.

I'll be waiting to be proved right or wrong.

Last week Connelly said he had being showing really good form at Casey, and was in line for a call up soon.

Fetta is tough and has some balls about him. Needs to sharpen up his disposal and work on a few areas of his game, but if he is going to be a part of this team going forward he needs to be given a chance at the top level to prove he belongs.

Could surprise a few with his selection.

Also, there is always room for another Ranga in the team. Gingers make great footballers!!

Cheney a spud?

Ho hum.

Sometimes I think that when people have red hair it makes it hard for some people to remember their age.

Cheney goes alright and may yet take another step. I'm not gonna go over the top because there's no need or point to.

He's alright, worth keeping an eye on and giving a run when others are out of form.

I thought Bartram was good for us yesterday; better than plenty of others.

If Bruce is injured, Cheney in. Cheney has simply deserved a spot on his performance over the past 3-4 weeks at Casey.

Give fanta pants a go purely out of sympathy for his shock of red hair.

On second thought its not our defence which is deficient atm. Rather a Bail (if fit) come in to inject some pace and aggression into the midfield.

I think Bartram's been more then servicable over the last few weeks but is he going to be there in 2012 onwards when we're looking towards winning a premiership? I'd say no. Cheney and Strauss are the two most likely players to hold down that defensive stopper back pocket position and Cheney's form warrants him getting a crack. I saw him with Casey last week and he looked good.

We just need Cheney to develop Strauss's kicking skills or Strauss to get Cheney's toughness and that back pocket position is taken care of!

I've seen him play plenty & reckon he's a good footballer. He's not a speedster but his pace is OK. He's probably quicker than Whelan was.

Can play flank or pocket depending on the right matchup.

He can add some hardness as well.

Yeah but it's Bruce who's going out injured.

Cheney or Joel MacDonald?

im not convinced on cheney either...maca, rivers, bartram all well ahead of him

will be a good vfl player and if we were a decent side he wouldnt get a sniff, expect him to be delisted in time to come due to strngth of list and lots of backmen

we need a small defender, maybe jetta will go back. much in the whelan mould

At the moment Macdonald is ahead of Cheney. Macdonald should come in this week if Bruce is

injured had an apparently really good game for Casey.

Nonsense. Bartram is 22, 18 months older than Cheney. Both/either can be there in 2012. Strauss is just starting out - we'll just have to see how he's going in a while.

Not saying age is the reason why Bartram wont be there, more so because apart from his stopping ability I don't think he offers a whole lot. Struggles at times in the air against good marking small forwards and his disposal and decision making is questionable. Cheney's been carving it up in the VFL and looked good in the matches he played last year.

It's nothing against Bartram, just with the competiotn for spots on the list starting he may struggle to stay on the list end of next year or 2012 IMO. I'd be more then happy if he proves me wrong however.

Joel Macdonald should play next week. We need experience in the side if Bruce is not there.

Cheney will get his chance, but we must try to win this week-the season is not done yet.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
