The footy show

Just witnessed on the CH 9 Footy Show. AFL want to play the Anzac game between the Pies V Dons in Turkey in 2015. WTF? How would the players turn around and play the next week? The AFL want to extend the season due to the new teams coming in. I have flown to Europe for a holiday, and to fly to Turkey for a weekend is insane. To fly back and prepare for the next weekend, wow!

Then to top it off, Sam has come out and said the players on the ground should be reduced to 16.

My thoughts, lets rebuild the stadiums so the ground is rectangle. The AFL can compete against the ever growing sport, SOCCER.

Lets get NASA to carve out a ground on the moon. All 44 players can play in space suits, so with no gravity to Sam Newmans pleasure, the ball will be kicked longer!

I cant believe I'm saying this, but bring back THE BOUNCE.

With a bit of wind courtesy of some Mexican the night before, the 44 can reach new "highs" in their space suits.

I can't believe the footy show gets it's own thread on here.

Only way a match in Turkey could work is if the following week was the split round and Collingwood and Essendon had the week of, however it would be far to early in the season that it would defeat the whole purpose of the split round to give all players a rest late in the season....

As far as Sam's theory went, I didn't hate it. Don't agree with reducing the players to prevent diminishing the quality of the AFLs gene pool when GC and GWs come in. I did like his other two theories though... Especially the no kicking backwards rule. I know it was trialled in the NAB cup a while back, but IMO that was one rule that should have stayed on for the season proper.

As far as the footy show goes in general, I don't know why I bother most weeks. It's usually drivel aimed at the lowest common denominator (I refer you all to the 'hillarious' footage of a dog rooting a footy that was shown tonight). I much prefer the Sunday Footy Show. It has many of the same faces as the Thursday show, yet it is actually worth watching. They aren't all pre-occupied with being massive dicks. They still have a good laugh, and it's funny, but they also actually talk footy. A good way to spend a seedy Sunday morning.

I can't remember the last time I watched The Footy Show.

As for 16, I thought that had been tried before in some decent comp.

I'm pretty sure the 'no kicking backwards' is used in some decent comp too (VFL?).

I don't think it will happen. The logistics are not possible. When has a professional sporting league anywhere in the world EVER played a regular-season match so far from home? The turn-over is not possible, ESPECIALLY with a fast game like football. I can't imagine either team being particularly excited about it from the players point of view.

From a marketing perspective, both teams are probably salivating at the prospect, though.

And you watch The Footy Show? *gag*

You haven't really thought about this have you?

Both teams could have a bye the week after. They were talking about 2015, which is five years from now. Each team in the AFL will have two byes per year. Problem solved.

More the point, why would you give a crap? It's Collingwood & Essendon. Any chance to make thier life tougher is ok by me. Send them to Beruit for all I care.

Yes more details have been revealed. There are to be changes in line with the further fostering of the ANZAC tradition. Changes to team uniforms and attire are proposed. The side winning the toss will don the Slouch hat and the team loseing the toss will have to grow enormous moustaches. As AFL style fields are not available the field will encompass the principal landing beaches for the Gallipoli campaign. The team winning the toss will enter the stadium on landing craft from the Australian navy. The opposing side will take the adjoining hills as their starting position. The interchange bench will be expanded to accomodate the inevitable loss of life associated with the use of rifles, mortars and howitzers in regular play. The umpires will be replaced with representatives of the Red Cross and the League of Nations. Players who as a result of play become listed on the long term injury list - particularly those who have lost limbs - will be reptriated to the island of Lemnos where Andrew Demetriou will dance the "Zorba" to them and prepare them for embarkation to Flanders.

Future ANZAC games are proposed for the Kokoda trail, Long Tan, and just north of Seoul in Korea.

The NFL play a regular season game in London every year now. They do it at the very start of the season, so there's precedent from another major sporting code to play halway across the globe. The EPL seriously looked at the feasibility of playing an additional 39th round in their season exclusively in 'commercially marketable' countries.

Thanks poseidon.

I can't believe some posters are actually taking this seriously. It doesn't even merit serious criticism.

Anyway, surely the match has to be Aussies v. Turks, beach footy. We don't have an All-Australian team for nothing do we?

You are lucky you get the Sunday show. All we get up here is Rugby and I just cant stand the game. Ridiculous waste of time. I dont watch footy show much but tuned in just in case something about Tommy might have come up and see who was on the panel. Once the Melbourne game was over, I tuned out.

Who cares! We don't have to travel, anything to upset the apple cart at the Dons or pies works for me!

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
