anyone else like fitzroy? Blitz!@

god point powelly who were ur fav fitzroy players? James Manson? Blitz!

correct. Matt Dundas, Butch Gale and Paul Boderick for hogg, ripped off hard. Blitz!

I used to go to alot of fitzroy games, with my paper-boy buddy's. I'm all ways melbourne but, it only cost $1.20 for me to get in to princess park. I used to collect cans during the game and by the end, i'd have bought a pie, drink and still walk out with a profet of $5.00..

used to like Paul Roos, would have loved him if he played for the Dees...

I had a soft spot for Fitzroy virtually everyone did, but for the wrong reasons. I wished they won every game except when they played the dee's. I remember going to their games against Melbourne till the mid eighties when they had a good side, played finals etc and then started selling off the players to survive!! That year when Bernie Quilan game back and doggie played for them was cool to watch, but it was really just an encore. They ended up where the AFL wanted them as they were the team nominated to go north to the Gold Coast, they refused and the unfortunate bears were born. Some parallels to the Roos there I feel.

Roos was the reason to watch them play, the way he covered the whole ground (A License to run) in those wouldn't be possible today, the ball moves too fast.

Martin Pike went there in 95 after he dumped him, as Garry said at the time a very talented player but wouldn't stick to club rules.

Fitzroy kicked 36 Goals against us one cold Day at Waverly. I Hate them....I don't have soft spots for opposition Clubs.

I assumed this would have been a thread about the reincarnation playing in the VAFA. They were runners up in div D this year so go up to div C for 2010. Check out Fitzroy FC

Sometimes go past Brunswick St Oval for a peek on a Saturday arvo as I live nearby. They've got a strong following so there is a good atmosphere at the games. Seemed to be becoming a cool way to spend a Saturday afternoon amongst the Fitzroyalty set... any interest in the game at this level is a good thing I guess.

As for the VFL team, I always liked them because they were aligned with my local area & footy clubs and I suspect, with the benefit of hindsight, because they sucked so badly that they never really posed a threat to the Mighty Dees!

Fitzroy merged.

But lets all be honest. Fitzroy football club died. And the Brisbane bears just got re-named.

You can see why Kangaroo fans fought so bitterly against being relocated.

I heard about them in the VAFA. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they approach FFC for permission to use the name "Fitzroy FC" ? From memory the bloke who started it was a former Fitzroy supporter and had the opportunity to start the club up playing football, after getting permission to use Brunswick St oval. Pretty sure I heard him interviewed on SEN a year or two ago. Magnificent story.

Wonder if the club will work up through the ranks in terms of competition and arise...

Probably not.

Didn't the Reds, who already played at Brunswick st Oval, merge with another Fitzroy team?

There were still over 500 Fitzroy FC members as of last year weren't there?

Absolutely. The Brisbane Bears dragged a dead Fitzroy Carcus on the back of a Truck up to the Gabba.

The Day the papers were signed the then Bears president was laughing at the Press conference-it was a take over.

Merge my ass. Take note Wayne Jackson.

You could well be right. Perhaps it was the Reds that gained permission from the Fitzroy FC to be renamed to Fitzroy Lions. Come to think of it, I think they liased with the Brisbane Lions on the issue as well.

The Reds were already established at Brunswick St Oval & they merged with the Fitzroy Football Club, to bring the original FFC back to life so to speak & yes, give a functioning football club access to FFC's still existing member base, etc. From all reports its been a success, they made the Grand Final and crowds have been getting bigger so it definitely appears that way.

As far as I know whoever still had control of the Fitzroy Football Club, the entity, approached the Reds.

They are not called the Lions. It is the Fitzroy Reds.

Thanks for that. Fitzroy Reds. My memory is a little hazy on the topic. But didn't they approach Bris. Lions for the use of "Lions" ?

No idea. I don't know why they would need to approach anyone to use 'Lions' though, its not like they have exclusive use of it, there are hundreds of clubs that are the Lions. They may have just retained 'Reds' because they wanted to, history of the other club, etc.

That new Logo for the lions is just Dull & uninspired. Glad i don't have to support it.

Just Cheap & Nasty like all the "new" post '87 clubs.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
