only 3 players above 26, 2 months. so other than those 3, all will be under 27 at the start of next year. if we keep recruiting well in 4 years from now we will have an even spread of players ages rather than holes at certain points in the list. 22 of the 43 names above (before we consider draftees etc) are younger than 22 years of age, thats pretty young for footy.

and perhaps most important is some of the players that have been written off as 'delistings' by some people,

mcnamara only just 19, cheney just 20, i think these guys deserve a chance, they have only had a couple of years on the list.

when you realise how young our list is you cant really expect us to dominate for 3_4 years, and the advantage of that is that because we dont rely on players aged 26 and above (even the 25 year olds Jamar, Davey, Moloney, Warnock and Johnson are not exactly our 'key' players apart from davey) meaning that in 4 years when we should have a pretty good spread of players and be in our 'window' the window will keep on going for 2-3 years at least...

i really think we should look forward to the next decade, even if we are not as successful as we want to be in the next 2 years...

What strikes me is the number of players 23 and under (from Meeson to Watts). About two-thirds of our list have their best footy ahead of them, if you consider that most players tend to peak between 24-27.

The players we've let go have been older players in decline. Our better "older players" have been retained for leadership attributes as well as plenty of good quality football left to give.

I've posted this to help clarify what I think is the rationale to our list management.

This I think would suggest that those in the 24 - 27 age bracket who can't perform at or above their current formline, the poorest could be in trade/delist territory.

I think we might look for 2 list spots here to open up.

With Seaby on the market, IMO he'd be about a 3rd Rnd pick.

I think we'd look to gain an extra 2nd Rnd pick & an extra 3rd Rnder

I'd happily go into 2010 with 7 picks inside 50 and pick up Seaby & Dylan Grimes amongst our other draft selections.

Seaby would be a handy mobile Ruck to back up Jamar & Meeson for a couple of seasons. Spencer is still a little ways off.

Dylan Grimes I think would become a more than handy Tall defender for our future, to replace a Warnock or Rivers in about 3years time.

Agree. Both deserve more time at AFL level.

It speaks volumes about a club when the 13th oldest player is 23.

I think you may have got your Danny Hughes 'confused as the current one has not debuted for MFC yet and I think he could not be selected in last few weeks because he is still a rookie. Did the earlier Danny H only play 87 games???

Oh yeah, not me footy wire has mucked up there. I've just posted their material for us to reference, to be more accurate about our idea's. I'll delete that line.

And we have:

3 players with around 200 games

2 players with just over 100 games

11 players with 50-100 games, and ...

27 players with less than 50 games.

Not sure if iy has been reported anywhere else, but I heard Zomer has been released from the Rookie List - That said, according to Rookie listing rules, was his time up anyway?

Yeah, he has been a rookie for two years, as have been Valenti and Spencer. Spencer is a must keep. Hughes and Healy will probably be retained as rookies. I love little Valents, but, sadly, his time is up.

We really are incredibly lucky considering how events have fallen into place with the new clubs coming and such.

I'm not so certain about that.

Yes we have a lovely list looking at the ages, but putting together a premiership team takes more than just the 3 years of heavy recruiting. The two big teams this year completed their big recruiting drive YEARS ago, with Geelong in the years they did F/S, and the Saints around 2000 when they bottomed out... But both teams have added some of their best players in the years AFTER their major recruiting drive. We get the whole Watts/Scully/Trengove years... but in the years following that, where we climb slowly, getting say pick 6... followed by a yer when we limp into, or just miss, finals... we'd get pick 9... And with those pick up a Rioli, or Hurley type if we were lucky.

As it stands, we'd end up with a pick in the teens if this eventuated, or later still if we go ok next year.

Perhaps I'm making too much of it. We won't be losing position compared to the other 15 clubs, as they're in the same place. Perhaps those later picks are just a reflection of how diluted talent will become in 5 years, as there'll be 18 teams, and still the same amount of players to call on in draft times.

I'd suggest that both of those sides were considered to have under-achieved during the period that you speak of. Add to that the dominance of (from '02 to '04) Brisbane and Port Adelaide, and the strong Grand Final rivalry between West Coast and Sydney in '05 and '06, and you have a situation where the Premiership window wasn't as open as it had appeared for those Clubs.

Most people including me think that our list is developing nicely however, looking at the games at the weekend and even past grand finalists, I believe we still need another contested marking forward and another big bodied key backman and a ruckman that can play like another midfielder i.e Mitch Clark or an Adam Goodes type.

Although our backline is good I don't think it matches up against the teams with power forwards such as St Kilda and Adelaide with Burton and Tippet. Rivers and Warnock are simply not strong enough when compared to Rutten and Bock for instance.

Looking at the 2000 grand final again it was clear that Essendon were so much bigger and stronger. Our fullback was Steven Febey and he played most of the day against James Hird. He tried hard but really got murdered in one on ones.

I think we need some big bodied players around the ball, up forward and back. They should be the backbone of the side with the likes of Davey, Wonna, Pettard, Scully, Morton etc feeding off them.

I hope we draft Scully and Trengove but until we get some big bodied "Generals" I think we will struggle to have consistent wins and vie for the holy grail.

What? This year? Gee there's a surprise.

2024 Player Reviews: #36 Kysaiah Pickett

The Demons’ aggressive small forward who kicks goals and defends the Demons’ ball in the forward arc. When he’s on song, he’s unstoppable but he did blot his copybook with a three week suspension in the final round. 2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. He showed great resilience in coming back from a nasty rib injury and is expected to continue in that role for another couple of seasons. 2024 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield. There could be more of that in 2025.
