to be honest, I'm not sure she wrote a whole lot of this story... Col pretty much wrote this one himself... but i agree most of her work is quality...

this is really encouraging from Col... his footy has already improved, and no doubt will continue to improve with his current attitude...

Did anyone else think of Barry Hall when reading this (apologies if anyone else has written this already)? He was a problem for his first few years, and then look how he turned it around. I hope this article is a sign that Hannabal was right. It's funny what a bit of success does to a players' concentration. And this team is headed for success. It's just a question of how much...

Great to Hear Col taking some responsibility. Knows what he has done wrong and is looking to turn it around. Must hurt knowing you were taken top 3 and seeing Cooney win the Brownlow, knowing how far away he is from being an elite player. Wake up call is good for him. Good Luck Col! and GO DEES.

It's what she got out of him that makes it a good article. If she didn't quote him it would be an op-ed and there are too many of those IMO.

As for Colin, I'm glad he realises that it is a work in progress. Many here have already lauded his 'return' after kicking four goals against the Hawks. Miles to go before he sleeps...

I think what vanlo means is that the article is as strong as it is because of how open Colin was. When did you ever read a profile so full of quotes from the subject?

Congrats to Emma since she got him to open up but the meat of the piece is in Colin's words. He made it as good as it is because he was so honest.

Certainly a good article, and yes Emma Quayle's a very good football writer.

Did you notice that the player peer assessment program took place in November 2007? Yet (as documented in the article) in March 2008 and in March this year Col was still getting into trouble for his wayward behavior!

He is very much a work in progress. Does he have the intelligence and backbone to come through as a good or (we hope) very good player? I dearly hope so, but I'm still very wary. However I'm a bit scared that he may end up as just another Melbourne couldabeen/shouldabeen (and we've had tooo many of them in my lifetime)!!!

Congratulations Colin, conducting an interview like that was an extremely gutsy thing to do. It is harder than anything on field. For blokes I reckon emotions are a funny thing. Physical pain can be confronted and dealt with, emotions... not so much.

I don't post much but reading that article really refreshed my confidence in you as not only a potential gun footballer but as a bloke who is misunderstood and one who has been misrepresented as a nasty boy by the media just because that's what they get paid to do. Although there are indiscretions, I give you the benefit of the doubt and shame myself for believing their hyperbole. I know that I myself am guilty of having too much sauce from time to time, I'm just lucky that I'm nobody! Thank you for setting it straight.

I, of recent, haven't been watching you as part of the team I love, but rather, as someone who plays with them. Of that whole other "Colin Sylvia- Complaints, Congratulations and Comments" thread I never read a word as I figured none of it would be constructive (disclaimer, I don't know what was in it I just assumed that). That has changed. Respect restored. Go forth in the red and blue, as I feel like we've just picked up a new, experienced #3 draft pick as you've now figured not only your body but "it" out. Tear 'em a new one starting tomorrow. Which team would be better to destroy and continue the form which you have built over the past month!

That's what journalism used to be filled with - quotes, facts, etc.

Not opinion and the following statement which will call the Mark Robinson Dysfunction "There are people who say..."

Or the lazy sh!t that is done from time-to-time where the 'article' is a simple dictation from the tape of the interview - Robinson also does this.

Off track slightly, I just think that there are many people trying to get a position like his and he remains in his position by the grace of an unholy god that cares nothing for standards or karma.

Agreed. I think his role (i.e. the phonecall) is an example of just how little any of us know about what the Captain's real role is. I reckon the vast majority of the work a good captain does is completely shielded from the outsiders' eyes.

What a great read!

I think it's great this article has come out and explained exactly where Col is at................supporters have always wanted to love him, but he's just given us very little opportunity to over the years.

Hopefully he can continue his steady improvement, and from the sounds of it, the penny has finally dropped for him.

Yeah, but he wasn't as completely alone then as he was today. Some are saying Jamar, Jones, and Moloney... but I didn't think we had one winner except Col.

In the Hawks game we had a few good players. Didn't we? Happy to be proven wrong. I think I'm going off the fact that I was pleased with aspects of the Hawks game... whereas with the pies one, we were as bad as last season...
