Does anyone know his situation. We desperately need his crumbing and chasing ability in our forward 50. Jetta tries hard but just does not put himself in the right positions often enough

1st game back today for Casey after that Hammy.

thanks dee luded... at least another 2 weeks away it sounds

I wouldn't get too carried away with Austin.

He was a good find last year but is a little over-hyped in my opinion.

Addam Maric is another exciting small forward prospect that is worth keeping an eye out for.

Is Maric running around for the Scorps? From memory he played a couple of games last year... when's he going to slot into the line up? Everything I've read about the game suggests we lack that small forward now Davey is up sharking kicks in the mid/backline.

Wona kicks goals ffs; just what we are screaming out for!

Maric was named in the emergencies for the Adelaide match and is a good chance to play this weekend. He is a small forward who has stated that he hopes to develop into a sneaky rat Milne type player. He is renowned for having a very accurate kick. In addition to his preffered role of goal sneak, Maric has also been used as an attacking midfielder.

I just think that he is a little over-hyped. He can only kick ~35m and he is quite slow. I'm still glad to have him on the list though. I love his enthusiasm.

Personally, I'm screaming out for picks, not goals.

Would love to have both Maric and Woena in our team right now. Both accurate kicks for goal, both young.

Did Maric not play in the VFL today just in case someone pulled a hammy in the warm up. Did not see him listed in the stats?

Woenamarri kicked 1 goal today and Robbo kicked 5.3

Lets just say...someone will be making way for Robbo against the CATS.

ALSO HOW DOES THE GOLD COAST IMPACT THE 2009 NATIONAL DRAFT? DON'T THEY GET THE FIRST 4 PICKS? OR IS THAT 2010?

I've seen Wona clear 50m accurately in the past. He's not a huge kick, and generally tends to kick it low and hard rather than upwards, but is very effective.

He kicked 24.4 and averaged just under 12 possies a game from 18 matches in his first year, at the worst team in the league. He also laid 62 tackles (4th at club). Forward pocket is a tough position to play at the best of times. Imagine being stuck there for 4 quarters when the team is averaging the least inside 50's per match, as we did last year? Also, Wona's field kicking/passing is just about the best at the club at the moment, and while he may not be super quick, he's not slow. His agility and lateral movement is exceptional, and he reads the play as well as any raw 19yo indigenous footballer going around at the moment, IMO.

To put it into perspective, those numbers aren't too disimilar to the much hyped and lauded Cyril Rioli, who played in a premiership side with unlimited forward supply and the crumbs of Buddy and Roughead.

I can sort of understand why you'd think he might be overhyped, especially after his 4 goal performance against Freo, and the way his form tapered later in the year, but IMO the hype is just about right.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I like the kid. You will not get any argument from me about his accuracy close in, and his tackling was great last season also. But people seem to go on about him like he will be the saviour of the club or something.

I can see why people would get carried away with him because he was one of the few positives from last season (in particular his form in the incredible Freo game that you mention) and his frog-jump is pretty infectious. People also seem to get a little worked up over indigenous players for some reason (maybe a hangover form the wizard) it is surprising how often you hear him descibed as "speedy" or "flashy." He clearly has a cult appeal - I just don't think that he justifies the level of expectation that surrounds him currently.

He's an accurate forward who apparently 'trained the house down' during the pre-season, so you've gotta except a little bit of hype surrounding his return. Can't wait to see him back out on the ground, with Robbo and Wona back i'm a bit more confident we'll kick at least 5 goals a game o_O

I share Hazy's criticism's of Wona but I'm also more positive about him, partly because I hink we're probably going to see a more streamlined and thus quicker version this year.

I'll be surprised if he's be clearing 50 metres when there's a man on the mark and a ruckman in the square though.

Maric was the obvious 'in' if one of the emergencies was to play, so I'd say that's the case.

SPOT ON

Wonna may not be the second coming, but with a good forward set up he has the tools to be a great damaging forward. He plays taller than he is, leads and marks... After looking at Porplyzia this week I was thinking we desperately need the guy back...

The best thing about him is that he has the gift of being able to find space.

Well argued and I agree.

Sometimes when things are tough on the ground, a player absent through injury becomes a "better" player in people's minds than he actually is.

If fit I think he would be selected in our team. However, he has missed alot of football and may take some time to acclimatise. I enjoy his onfield enthusiasm

I agree that we are screaming for picks going forward.

Its a gift often provided by opposition defenders. A greater gift to have is the ability to win the contested ball.

You're easily pleased. Fact is most goals are scored through uncontested marks inside 50, frees / 50 metre penalties or uncontested possessions through spillage or handball recieves.

Winning contested ball is fine but its more the domain of the midfielder not the small forward.

Thanks for the confirmation that forwards are just receivers and dont need to win the contested ball.

Thanks for the confirmation that forwards are just receivers and dont need to win the contested ball.

Consider the round just passed. From actual play 76 goals were kicked, how many of these were from handball recieves or loose balls gathered compared to posessions won in a contest.

From marks (almost exclusively inside fifty and uncontested) 88 goals were kicked. A further 27 goals were scored from free kicks and 50m penalties.

Of course a forward must provide a contest and indeed it is a strong suit of the subject player but what sets him apart is his ability to read the game and position himself accordingly.

I too agree that Wonaeamirri was over-hyped last year, but having said that I think we presently miss him dearly. Also, he's lost a considerable amount of weight over the preseason, is moving faster, and just looks a different player. I saw him play for the Aboriginal Allstars earlier in the year, as well as an intraclub match at Casey and he was most impressive.

Those judging him on his 08 output may well be surprised when they see the new version.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
