He's under contract for 2009. And it depends on the terms of the contract. They'll probably try and trade him 1st.

Id say your right, contracts are usually backended, especially our bigger ones from years past. Yze and Bruce both had big back ended contracts, Bruce will be having his last big money year this season, he will make the most next season than he ever has.

Many contracts are back ended, you may see it as poor planning, which it is most of the time, but if a team is desperate a backended contract usually wins out. Unfortunately teams cannot always pay under the cap during one year but with an impending retirement/veteran status of a player a backended option is always viable and rightly so.

My point is though, that, a young talented ruckman like Warnock, I would have thought, would be alot more interested in a club like Carlton than Melbourne at this stage. I certianly hope I am wrong.

They won't use their first pick (7ish). They might offer their second pick (25ish). Our pick 17 or 19 is better and if Robbie wants MFC, I'm confident we can negotiate it down to our 3rd pick (pick 35ish).

If I recall correctly Yze has just completed the 4 year deal which he signed after being bid up by the Blues to $1.4 million or so. Quite likely that it would have been backloaded to maximise payment in the year (or 2 years) when he became eligibile for the veteran's list so Yze's share of Dr Evil's one million dollars might have been around $600,000 or $650,000.

An important lesson in knowing when to hold em and when to fold em I guess. We should appoint Kenny Rogers as our List Manager.

Bruce did sign a long contract with MFC. How could Collingwood get their mits on him if he is contracted to MFC? Your substantiate does not make sense.

FWIW, most AFL Clubs have all been burned by back ended contracts for player whose form, performances deteriorates as there contract payments acclerates. This only chokes the finances of the club and screws list management. It does not work and most AFL Clubs know this and I know from one CFO at an AFL that they dont do it

Clubs know they cant lowball one year with screwing later years so they dont do it. And BTW, how is a backended contract "viable and rightly so" when you have labelled it as poor planning?

Not completely correct.

Yze secured a marque contract at the end of 2002 for three years after a great season and Yze's manager flirting and courting Carlton for allegedly big bucks. I suspect your figure for the Blues is close to the package.

Unfortunately, Yze didnt not deliver on his contract dollars and deteriorated as footballer to the stage that as "Captain" and an acting one at that finished the 2005 season in an injury depleted EF team by running off the bench and tossing the coin to only return to the bench where he lately came for some very classy toepokes late in tbe piece.

His contract was up for renewal at the time. MFC wanted to give two years on a lower though still substantial amount. Yze wanted three years. Yze's manager went to the media and said Yze was prepared to go to the PSD. MFC gave him 3 years. We should have let him walk to the PSD then. Kenny Rogers rule should have defintely applied
