Ok sports fans here is the Final Starting 18 of Backs, Forwards & Midfielders based on votes accumulated this week. You've got to admit its a pretty good starting 18, but the jobs not finished - The interchange and emergencies must be picked for the Demonland '2009 best side'....

Unfortunately there are one maybe two who like to refer to this little project as flawed, but its the closest side you will get that involve everyone's opinions.

Here is the starting 18:

BACKS: WHELAN WARNOCK GARLAND

H-BACKS: RIVERS MARTIN C.JOHNSON

CENTRES: GREEN MOLONEY MORTON

H-FWDS: DAVEY BATE ROBERTSON

FWDS: SYLVIA MILLER WONAEAMIRRI

FOLL: P.JOHNSON McLEAN JONES

The nominations of the next 10 players who all accumulated significant votes in their respective categories but missed out on the starting 18 are: -

J.Frawley, C.Bartram (from the Backs)

C.Bruce, S.Buckley, J.Grimes, S, Valenti, McDonald (from the Midfielders); M.Jamar was 2nd most voted ruckman.

M.Newton, A.Maric (from the forwards)

These 10 are listed in a vote off. What you must do is pick your 4 interchange. Votes will then be collated. The top 4 become the interchange, The next 3 will be listed as emergencies. And then unfortunately 3 players will be eliminated from the DEMONLAND'S Best Squad for start of the 2009 season.

(NOTE: Whether you include Jamar as a 2nd ruckman to compliment the team is entirely up to you!) - this is likely to be a debatable topic...

A few will say its a bit "pie in the sky" because it doesnt include this years upcoming draft picks. Well we can all do it again come Mid-October then !

Its about your opinions at present!

Good Luck. I look forward to all your selections!

High Tower!

I've enjoyed your little series of polls on this, High Tower. Nice work.

As you mentioned, its really quite difficult to give the full picture, as we're going to have another significant change in the list for next year, but it's a fun exercise anyway. Obviously Bruce would be ahead of the Chris Johnson for a starting spot, but his versatility has hurt him in this sort of poll. Apart from that, its a decent list. Like many others around here, I'm looking forward to seeing our list once the trading period and drafts are over. Exciting times ahead.

Thankyou Pantaloons, and you are quite right, that Cameron Bruce's versatility has hurt him for the starting 18, but early polling suggests he will make the starting 22. Maybe poll-goers are also focusing on the future (hence 2009 side) and that the youngsters need valuable game time to improve.

If the poll were name the 5 best melbourne players at present, I would say that Bruce would be in the top 5. (Except Yze Magic's opinion.. ;) ).

By the way where is Santo Poko?

Hightower, you better remove Bruce from the poll.

He must be in the starrting 18 and given the Captaincy, or you will probbaly be banned from Demonland.

Well Moloney has made the starting 18, so has P.Johnson. Buckley is in contention.

Lynden Dunn has been an unlucky omission as he has not come under backs or forwards, was a notable omission from the midfielders category.

Read the thread.

dunn should have been included here. for the same reason as bruce, and because you left him out of the midfielders. or was that mclean? he should be on this list tho. he is clearly in our best 22.

(I'll come clean): You have your finger on the pulse so to speak.....absolutely correct. I kicked myself for not including Petterd in Backs and Midfielders categories. McLean in the Midfielders and Dunn in probably all three categories.

Huge oversight.

I had to automatically include McLean - there is no doubt which I did. Otherwise this would be the response:

As far as Petterd and Dunn go - I am z-thinking of ways - perhaps a reppa-charge vote. If not I will wait until trade time or xmas and start from scratch and include or new additions via the trade!

If you have any thoughts on this I'd be happy to listen...(or read in this case)

PS. I glad you liked the way I dismissed him

i like yze_magic. alot. in fact sometimes he comes to my house and brings over his dartboard set (complete with cameron bruce face cut out). normally he has to leave about 9 though, otherwise his mum gets pretty angry and comes and gets him. but it was funny because 'incorrect' had nothing to do with what he had said.

yeah i think you should do it again. it is an interesting exercise, obviously very limited. in fact it is interest that in this modern age we can run this sort of poll so easily but back in football eras gone by this would have been most useful, because players dont play in set positions as much anymore. it is much more likely that a player is a forward pocket/mid which means he can get the most vote overall but not enough in either categories.

maybe your poll could be 'talls' and 'smalls' but that predetermines the numbers of height instead of predetermines positions. is there a maximum number you can list in one of these polls?

perhaps when the team is posted there should be a vote on 'should any player be left out, and if so, who should be brought in' dual question poll and obviously there must be a 'no' option in these questions......

It would have made more sense to put the remaining 20-odd players on our list into this poll (or at least the half-decent ones). The fact that some guys were left off the other polls makes this an even better idea than it otherwise would have been.

Could make a pretty handy interchance with guys that are left out - Wheatley, Dunn, Petterd, plus the second ruck (which happens to me one M Jamar). They wouldn't be far off what's selected from this group.

but it was funny because 'incorrect' had nothing to do with what he had said.

Sure it did. Y_M asserted that High Tower would get banned if he didn't include Bruce in the 18. High Tower replied with 'incorrect'.

Thats an idea..............stay tuned. I'll get a few who will 'get their backs up, but what the hell. I'll finalise the side first and do that next week. By listing the entire side, asking should any player be left out of position and if so who, and for who? Petterd, Dunn....with a Yes or No option.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
