The proof that he was injury prone was apparent across multiple years. Unfortunately some players are the one who get injured. He never looked fit at the Crows to the truthful. I think the Dees list manager and Goody must have thought we could get a gem if he could stay injury free. My issue was that (1) we have him a 3 year deal (2 years with a trigger for a third was the sensible thing to do ) and (2) it cost us a future 2nd round which given 2024 would have been valuable. I think the Crows might have potentially delisted him after 2023 so they were happy to get such a good trade deal. We gambled. So far a bust but if we can get him fit, he showed signs of his talent. Though his inability to kick over 35 metres was an early issue in the games he did play in 2024.

I would argue it’s not a weak draft year. It’s okay. Some quality young players are even going to be available through the later group. Some will be drafted, some will go on to play VFL/SANFL/WAFL, some will go on to local leagues and others pursue different paths in their lives and sporting careers. It’s an exciting but anxious time for all. Will they get drafted? Where will they go ? Will it be a move interstate?

Gunston has shown how effective that smarts and footy IQ can be He will be 33 in February. A 2-year deal is okay at a maximum. Say $550k a season. Perhaps a trigger for a third year if he plays more than 14 games in 2027. Assume he’s an Unrestricted free agent?
