  1. Foxtel published its take up rate for Kayo over the weekend. It is 209,000 subscribers. Not sure if this included the free trial subscribers. Having now returned from overseas where I used it extensively I have hot a bit of a hurdle with low broadband speed but with luck the mythical nbn should be in my area by the end of the year. My main complaint would be that the channel 7 feed does take away from the value proposition. On the other hand the F1 with the Sky racing feed is great (if only the races were more exciting.) Game of thrones finishes next week which does not leave many must see cable programs on Foxtel. On the present Kayo subscription level that is revenue of $60M per annum which is clearly not enough for sustainability without cross subsidisation.
  2. we're now ten odd games into the season and other than the first bulldogs game I haven't seen much evidence of promotion or word of mouth excitement about the product. With the latest movie one would have expected some cross promotion but if it was there it slipped by my radar. Don't disagree but it could simply be brand awareness just like any other company.
  3. sounds a bit like our gameplan... absolute chaos
  4. Interesting thought and perhaps deserves a separate thread but why do you think that giving naming rights for Docklands stadium to Disney is any different to Etihad, Telstra or Colonial Mutual who were the previous holders of the naming rights.
  5. South Melbourne played at the Lake Oval which is within the Albert Park precinct. I's now called Lakeside Stadium. "Lakeside Stadium is a sports arena in Albert Park, Melbourne, Australia. Comprising an athletics track and soccer stadium, it currently serves as the home ground and administrative base for the South Melbourne FC, Athletics Victoria, Athletics Australia, Victorian Institute of Sport and Australian Little Athletics. " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakeside_Stadium
  6. Why would clubs "bid" for a licence in a competition that they already own? This isn't the IPL. Somewhere in this comp there might be a game of sorts but the marketers are being let run wild
  7. With the kayo product delivering only sports there is no need for Foxtel to regard sports as a loss leader to get subscribers to sign up for the more expensive packages. The math is relatively simple $300 per year per subscriber. Maximum subscribers 1.5 million ( think I'm generous) but let's say 3 million. That makes a little under a billion in total each year from which you need to deduct operating costs and profit before you come up with the money left for rights. The present AFL deal is around $400M per year and the NRL around $250M. Add in cricket and you are at the end of the pot before they pay for the remaining sports. Sure Foxtel doesn't pay 100% of these rights fee but it pays a very sizeable chunk. Of course Netflix etc could come along with a killer offer but they are around $15 a month at present so I can't see the return for those companies and they have no need to loss lead. Then again you might get a company like Uber that just pours money at the so called future without regard to profits in the short-medium term. Getting back to Sam... he'll be paid what he's worth.
  8. In theory Binman percentage already provides the incentive but I see where you are coming from. Many sports now have the bonus point concept. I would be happy to see it trialed at other levels but as you point out there are some issues. For example would you give bonus point to the losing team if they also score over the required minimum. It's certainly worth some further thought.
  9. I think this is different to the training facility. All of the clubs seem to have these medical foundations or the like attached to them. You may have noticed a club email earlier in the season from MFC about pledging a dollar amount for each win. The donation went to a "research" ? or similar arm of the MFC which made the donation tax deductible. My cynicism tells me it's a way of getting around some aspects of the soft salary cap but I could be wrong.
  10. he didn't play against the Bombers but if he did play this week... even for a half that would be great. Haven't heard about Hannan This weeks game is against Port Melbourne who are a non aligned team which generally means that their across the board team strength is quite high.
  11. If Weideman is unavailable for Casey and they take two travelling emergencies to Perth the AFL listed players available for Casey will be around 5. In theory the emergencies could take the red eye back to Melbourne and be available for Casey on Saturday at 2pm. Not ideal but possible. Had a look at the league wide injury lists and many clubs have long lists. Collingwood was near ours in number for example. I realise it all about who is out and for how long but the quality of our depth which has been a problem for years is really showing.
  12. I love some high brow reading early in the day: "Adopting Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of capital, field and habitus along with Loïc Wacquant’s understanding of neoliberalism as the reengineering and redeployment of the state,I illustrate the use of elite sport as a form of cultural glue to re-regulate the city in favourof market-like mechanisms thatbenefit the urban and political elite. The Victorian state has successively re-regulated this neoliberal urban entrepreneurial strategy, often preventing dissident groups from resisting neoliberal activities, through its monopoly over the legitimate use of symbolic and material violence."
  13. I'm surprised the extended kick out rule hasn't added to the number of coast to coast goals but it seems that the zone has just been moved out and we are not seeing much change. As LDC mentions all these rules should have been trialed at length in other competitions.
  14. Transparency is a wonderful thing OD cheers
  15. deleted
  16. love it... not only the mega training facility but the trainline to go with it. Think Ryalh? used to live at Macedon during the Bolte days... he had his own carriage that would be coupled to the normal commuter train. I'm excited.
  17. Oh boy... I am having flashbacks to the last high draft pick that just needed a bit of hip surgery. Come on down ... Jimma T Hard to see how this season could get worse
  18. The point of my post is that maybe 10k or thereabouts of our increased membership might simply be due to better sponsorship. I'll wager a few that the NT government takes a swag of 3 game memberships that are given away. Frankly the numbers are so rubbery it's time to use another measure. If only the clubs were consistent in their accounting one could look at revenue per member and other useful measures. Loosely related and on the theme of you think we have it bad, here's a great article from the Guardian on the fan impact of four English teams making the European play offs. A trip to Azerbaijan anyone ?? https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/may/12/liverpool-and-spurs-fans-hard-lesson-basic-economics-champions-league
  19. If the Possums were allowed to run free we could have Dame Edna as Premier
  20. One has to wonder how many memberships relate directly to sponsors and incentives. From a revenue viewpoint it makes no difference if the sponsor gives us $100k or buys 3,000 three game memberships which they give away etc. Similarly win games we give more.. make finals we give even more. The reality is that it is probably a mix but it is there. Trivia piece... At the famous merger meeting the MFC Board held more proxies through sponsor memberships than the rest of the attendees.
  21. 3 out of 4 would get me interested. The likelihood is 1 out of 4... we should luck into one win. The interesting conundrum is if we win 2 out of 4. TBH the problem is that even our wins have been very unconvincing. Just hard to see us turning it around in the next month
  22. There is definitely something in what you say and it is one of the reasons I have suggested we should aggressively experiment with positions, gameplans and skill development at VFL level. I would support alternative week strategies or even alternative quarter strategies. VFL is not about winning.. it is about maximising the chances of the senior team. Hell we've had a successful VFL team for years and it has not produced many players for the seniors. In the last quarter on Saturday we were 50 points up at 3/4 time and the direction from the coach was to implement game plan Joker. I've heard this direction before and my guess it means take more risks but to my uneducated eye I didn't see a real difference.
  23. We may not like it but is it time to consider a mega shared facility. The reality is that there will not be 10 Essendon style complexes built in Melbourne. If we continue as a bit player we will lose out unfortunately. It's the reality.
  24. The irony is that he was moved forward at VFL level because we had surplus defenders at senior level
  25. Interesting .. Tigers face exactly the same problem as us but they have money. Lot's of soul searching but they will bite the bullet in the next few years. Why not get out in front of them. Moving to Punt Road would probably not be a great idea as it represents the past albeit a slight upgrade on the present. I will wager you that the grandstand is heritage listed... would you like your club to train in yellow and black surrounds with the possibility of a giant tiger face on the roof.
