I would think that after last year's Menzel trade, Adelaide would be wary of Carlton's 'gifts'!! If Carlton are trying to 'offload' Gibbs they can't be too greedy as to what they get back. Pick 13 and a player maybe. Adelaide's pick 13 will enable them to deal for the GWS player(s) they want and have a good round 1 pick. eg give GWS pick 5 for pick 7 and Marchbank +/- other bits and pieces. As an aside, if the GWS and GCS pick upgrades get done they could hold picks 2 to 8 and the cynical me would think there would be some wink-wink, nudge-nudge, chats as to which players are passed over. So GWS/GCS don't use their early picks for Academy players, Carlton, Freo and Brisbane get their preferred player etc etc. And the AFL will turn a blind eye to it all.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - MICHAEL HIBBERD
Lucifers Hero replied to KC from Casey's topic in Melbourne Demons
I think we can all come up with alternative scenarios but that wasn't what your earlier posts said. No I don't think we would say it is next years 2nd round or it doesn't happen, nor did I say anything of the sort. I wasn't doubting you or the club Saty, just asking for clarification on the 2nd alternative as you mentioned it in several posts and it sounded like you knew of 2 specific offers on the table. -
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - MICHAEL HIBBERD

Saty, what are the two alternatives. We have offered next year's 2nd round pick. Did I miss the other offer? -
We can only have 3 'B' rookies: we have Maynard, we have nominated Daniel Allsop (altho it is not mandatory to take him). So if O'Connor chose us it would be a certain promotion to the main list for Smith (a player can not go from one rookie list to another). I think Smith will be promoted, regardless of the other outcomes.

Regarding the 2017 OOC players there will be more than 200 players OOC next year (every year in fact) so its far too difficult to assess them. But, here is an early list of 2017 FA's http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-05-13/the-2017-free-agents Now is the time to get in their ear!! Last week a caller to SEN said Carlton had wined and dined Fyfe during Grand Final week. Apparently, they want him as an FA next year (for free) and have created a war chest of $2m p.a. for him. While its hard to see the $2m being accurate the attempt to get him may not be too far fetched, especially as it caught Andy Maher a bit flat footed and he didn't refute it. Of course, Freo can put a spanner in the works (ala the Dangerfield trade) and meet an offer and force a club (Carlton) into a trade.

If its band 3 for those guys it means Freo get pick 23 and Rich 26. It seems that Wells going to Coll might also net North a band 2 or 3 ie pick 20 or 31. In what is said to be a very even draft deep into the 3rd round they are really valuable picks. They are fairly ridiculous comp picks for 'veteran' players and one who isn't in best 22. The AFL should amend their formula to take account of what the player would get in a 'live' trade. While not easy to do mathematically they have the discretion to do this by looking at trades for similar type players With these (potential) 'distortions' of the draft it signals a case to broaden the band ranges and all comp picks to be at the end of a round, not ladder position eg: FIVE BANDS Band Current: Proposal 1. 1st Round End of 1st Round 2. End of 1st Round End of 2nd Round 3. 2nd Round End of 3rd Round 4. End of 2nd Round No comp picks 5. 3rd Round

More information please - a few hints will do!

Going back to the title of this thread - the off-season improvement, Roos in his final press conference and B&Fspeech Roos made a point of saying the future starts now. It is what the players do in the next 8 to 10 weeks that will set them up for success. If they come back fit they go straight into preseason, if they don't they lose 8 weeks getting them fit. Jetta (our quiet achieving gun) says this on our club website: I just wanted to get a lot fitter and back up the years that I’d had before, so it all starts with your off-season and then leads into pre-season and being able to get through every session. “The season should then look after itself body-wise.” If a player comes back from the off-season fit then the coaches can teach them new tricks, game plan etc. So in terms of off-season improvement I hope all the players heard Roos' comments. I like to think most players will do the right thing in the off season. For, where we end up in 2017, I shall wait a month and see what our list and our fixture looks like. Oh, and how our players come back from the off-season. I don't think 'success' is going to magically happen because we have a bit more experience and a new coach.

Maybe Buckley is trying to boost the AFL compensation picks for North and Freo! Looks like the AFL will be giving out a lot of comp picks this year. That with, Academy picks, priority picks, Father/son picks makes a mockery of the 'Draft Order based on final ladder position'. Thankfully, we have already stockpiled our high end draft talent.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/teams/melbourne/gary-buckenara-analyses-melbournes-list-after-2016-season/news-story/eba2b968e008e1dfd778b94cb3c4a884 Ok, the link is now working (in Firefox): copy it and paste into your browser. On re-reading it, it is still the most banal 'analysis'; written by someone who knows little about us, who cut and paste from other sources. The only original contribution I could find was: "... 20-year-old at North Ballarat in the VFL by the name of Rohan Marshall. He’s a potential key position player who can also play in the ruck and can play back and forward." to back up Gawn. Seems like he just plucked a name out of 'left field' to cover for the lack of research. Not sure why he thinks (or maybe he doesn't 'think') that we would want a 20 yo old to back up Max when we have a couple of young back ups already. We need a back up who can play the role in 2017/18/19 while the young guys develop. Kind of proves how little he knows about our list. Edit: I just googled 'Rohan Marshall'. Buckenara even spelt his name wrong - it is Rowan! I rest my case re quality of the article!!!

The article is full of general comments with little reasoning and tbh his list analysis and needs analysis is so basic that it is not worth spending time pasting it in. You would already have read it all on Demonland and club announcements. His banal conclusion: We will be aiming for finals!

The AFL 'changed' their unknown/undisclosed formula after the Frawley pick: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-10-07/revealed-what-it-takes-to-earn-firstround-free-agency-compensation- "CLUBS will only receive a first-round compensation pick after losing a free agent in 2015 if the player's new contract ranks them among the top five per cent of AFL wage earners aged 25 and older... It is believed the CEOs were told the 2015 threshold for a first-round compensation selection is significantly higher this year compared to 2014, when Melbourne received pick No.3 as compensation for losing defender James Frawley to Hawthorn... The AFL also explained that if a player's contract offer ranked in the next 10 per cent band then he would command compensation at the end of the first round, the next 15 per cent earned a second-round pick and the next 20 per cent earned a pick at the end of the second round". Doubt this would stop the AFL making up 'other circumstances' to justify any comp pick they want to give!

Whatever rpfc decides, is fine by me.

Thanks...it is essentially rfpc's work, with a couple of tweeks. Viney games fixed.

Operator error Thanks...Fixed!

Updated to reflect Pedersen signing a one year contract Also, updated draft picks to reflect impact of Brisbane's pp. Thought it might be interesting to include the number of games each player has played...its a lot easier than searching thru the player list on the club website to get age and # of games!

Sadly, it looks like there is not much interest in Jack Grimes at this stage. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-10-06/shattered-grimes-not-giving-up-afl-career-yet Its interesting that Jack made these comments: "I know that if I get the opportunity, I am the sort of person who will have a 100 per cent crack and put absolutely everything into it." and "I still do feel, moving forward, that I have a bit to offer. I feel confident in my own game and ability and know I have a lot of improvement left in me." I'm not sure he realises that effort isn't enough; skills count, playing the team game counts and most clubs will put their development resources into a youngster rather than improving a 27 yo. Hope his manager gives him another narrative and promotes him properly to other clubs. Despite being fairly shattered there is no hint of criticism of the club. Integrity plus, Jack.

LOL! I felt a bit the same when I was overseas for a time early this year on how to keep the 'Membership' thread updated! If you like I can update this thread for the next few weeks till the end of trade period and then see how your time is. I've always thought of it as 'rfpc's thread so it is yours whenever you want it back.
-
@rpfc Now that you are back, would you like to regain the updating of this thread. If you are still too busy, I'm happy to continue until you are have time. Cheers, LH

Couldn't bump the 'Where is rpfc' thread as it was derailed and closed. 'rpfc' posted on the Jesse thread last night. If you read this: Welcome Back to the Nuthouse, rpfc!

Harriet Cordner has joined the Dees Women's team as a 'B' Rookie http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2016-10-05/cordner-continues-tradition She will be the 8th Cordner to play for Melbourne. Her grandfather Don Cordner won a Brownlow and Captained the club. Two Cordners are in our Team of the Century. While I'm sneaking in Women's league news, Daisy won the Woman of the Year award, a sort of Brownlow : http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2016-09-29/pearce-named-football-woman-of-the-year Oh and some new assistant coaches were appointed. http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2016-10-04/assistants-named-for-womens-team Apologies for gate crashing the main Forum but not many people venture over to the Women's League Forum and I thought these stories were to good to miss especially the Harriet Cordner one. May she have as distinguished a footy career as her ancestors!

We could get him for zip as a DFA. We may give up a very late pick so he is on our list to train a month or so 'earlier' as Hawks did last year with Fitzy. While Hannath hasn't done well at Freo, I don't put a lot of score of Lyons faith nor development of players. So If mfc didn't have other options I'm with you and think he would be good for us.

Confess to being a Demonland 'tragic', so thanks to all posters for getting me thru some bad seasons. In addition to the moderators and the people already mentioned I would like to add 'AngryAtCasey' to the list to specifically thank. Each week he goes to a lot of trouble to write up how each senior player has performed. His descriptions are insightful and balanced, without hyperbole or favouritism. Really appreciate your work 'Angry'. ps @AngryAtCasey ...where does the 'Angry' come from - you never sound angry to me?

Jesse Hogan re-signs to end of Season 2019
Lucifers Hero replied to Lucifers Hero's topic in Melbourne Demons
There is a video on the HS website which I can't get to as not a subscriber. But the caption says: " RE-SIGNED Melbourne forward Jesse Hogan has sacrificed at least $1 million to stay loyal to the Demons under a deal that secures him to the club until 2019." Whatever the figure is is not important But it does support his press conference comments that his decision was not about money. Also, In his press conference he said ...if there was a time to go back to WA it was now...so his future is in Melbourne (paraphrasing). That should dispel any lingering doubts about him chasing the $$ and his commitment to the Dees. Now we can enjoy watching him tear up the G for the next 3 years! -
Oops! Cannot find mfc announcement, so my bad. Got ahead of things a bit. Will fix above post. By the way, Mahoney said today the club will be looking to sign up Salem and Weideman early next year He also said Pedersen will be offered a 1 year contract soon, Dunn is looking elsewhere and Dawes' future depends on trades we make. Edit: Post 59 fixed.
