  1. Max seems keen to get Preuss to the Dees. Sounds like we would play two ruckmen. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/max-gawn-keen-for-braydon-preuss-support-20181002-p507bq.html Mahoney hinted at that in radio interview when he said there were others beside Preuss we are looking at for the role we had in mind (or words to that affect).
  2. Some interesting scenarios there. One wonders whether Adelaide (or Port) will try and entice the Saints to give up pick 3 eg for Adelaide's 15 and 19 and next year's 1st round or something else (Port have 21 and 27 to play with as well as 9 and ?10). Saints need to find a decent pick for Hannebury, a less decent pick for Kent and picks for their other targets. I wonder if there is a 'spycam' set up in the respective SA club meeting rooms!!
  3. Peter Jackson will finish with mfc at the end of the month ? ? He has done so much for us and deserves so much praise and appreciation. Hope Bartlett and the Board have a special send off for him tonight with fans, staff and sponsors in attendance who I am sure would want to share in the thanks.

Yep a flag will be huge. In the meantime, the 90,000 crowd at each MCG finals shows we probably have 70,000 but about 25,000 of them are MCC members so don't count in our numbers. That the MCC had about 5,000 empty seats for the Pies/Tigers game shows how strong our support is within the MCC Those crowds also showed the latent support out there for the dees that as yet haven't joined as members. They may never do so but they are out there. Nonetheless, that turnout will prompt broadcasters and future sponsors to stand up and take notice. It will be huge for our exposure and the chance to capture the hearts of a younger generation and newcomers to aussie rules.
  6. Folks, just remember we have Live Pick Trading at the draft. The picks we have at the end of the Trade period will just be the draft order starting position. Clubs can trade up or down the draft as it progresses. Any phantom drafts will be, well just more phantom than usual! ? It will be interesting to see if we keep a high pick (4/5/6 or 9/10) from the Hogan trade whether we use it or cash in the chips on draft night! LPT presents a nice challenge for recruiting staff - much more second guessing other clubs than usual.
  7. We can also do some fancy trading at the draft table! There will be Live Pick Trading, so the picks we have at the end of the Trade period are just the starting point as clubs can trade picks to go up or down the order during the draft. Will be interesting to see if we keep a high pick (4/5/6 or 9/10) from the Hogan trade whether we use it or cash in the chips on draft night! LPT presents a nice challenge for recruiting staff - much more second guessing other clubs than usual.

I thought his partner is a teacher at Corpus Christi College...
  9. Presumably he would give a speech only if he featured in the awards. A very very outside chance of 5th in the Bluey so unlikely to hear from him.
  10. Fair points. Given their are at least 15 centre bounces there will be a lot of 6x6x6 set ups. I can't help but think our mooted list changes (May, Preuss, Hogan) in part relate to the impact of the new rules. It will be interesting to watch coaching reactions to the changes.
  11. Maybe our interest in Preuss is to help counter the impact of the longer goal square? The ball from a kick in will reach the fat part of the ground - far to wide to for one ruckman to defend. I can see Max patrolling one side of the ground and Preuss the other. This will allow us to keep our forward structures in place without dragging Tom Mc or Weideman up the field to defend the kick ins and get the ball forward.
  12. Well, I'm in 2019 mode and using a crystal ball to see what it might look like, especially with the new rule changes. The 6x6x6 rule means there will be few obstacles to getting the ball quickly from the midfield to the very open forward line at centre bounces. And the longer goal square will do the same. In fact a kick in can reach the middle and another kick will get the ball deep into i50. Those really help our 'ballistic' forward half ball movement. Our midsized forwards - Petracca, Melksham and Fritsch are very good marks. Maybe the club has decided that with the rule changes we have less need for Jesse. It will be sad to see him go but I can see how our forward line will work well in the new AFL world.
  13. It is worth remembering the 6x6x6 at the centre square rule change, when looking at what we need in defence. With that rule change there will be no players behind the sqaure, no +1 in defence and no time for the ruckman to drop back and help defend. Enormous additional pressure on the defence. May is being highly sort after for a reason.
  14. There is an interesting 'tension' between two game styles: 'possession' vs 'pressure' football. In the first camp is WCE, Hawks and to some extent Geelong. The second includes (2016 Bulldogs), Rich, Pies and Demons. The finals have shown that on any given day either style will win. imv it is the new rules in 2019 that will have the biggest impact on game styles: With the 6x6x6 at centre bounces the ball will go forward very fast. Imagine - no players behind the square and no +1 in defence. The ball will come out so fast that defenders will be disadvantaged as their will be no time for a +1 to drop back. With the longer goal square when the ball is kicked in it will reach the 'fat' part of the ground, probably at its widest point. Much harder to defend the width of the ground. So, I can forsee Max patrolling one side of the ground and Preuss patrolling while keeping our forward structures in place ie not dragging Tom Mc or Weideman up the ground to help defend the 'fat' part. Defending those situations, imv is what is driving our interest in Preuss and May. At the other end of the ground the rule changes help our fast and furious, bomb it long to forwards as initially there is no +1 to intercept. Imagine all those i50's that won't ricochet back out again! Most of our medium forwards (Melksham, Petracca, Fristch) are very good marks. These factors could be why we are willing to let Jessie go. It will be interesting to watch how game styles evolve in 2019. There will be a fair bit of experimenting by coaches but I think they will stick to their underlying 'possession' vs 'pressure' game styles.
  15. As I recall it Roos switched Frawley fwd, to settle a new defence, as soon as he realised Frawley wasn't putting in the effort (see 2014, round 2 vs WCE) much like Clarkson did with Buddy(played him up the ground). I don't recall discussion of an mfc offer. I recall he went to WA to talk to Freo.
  16. The last 3 premierships have been won by a Clarkson protege. The previous 3 by Clarkson himself. Not only is Clarkson a master coach he is a master at training coaches. Reckon he wore a wry smile on the siren.
  17. Jones talked about Hogan and a "fresh start" and doing what "is best for family, friends and his own performance". Anyone else get the sense from Jones' comments there may be more to it than just the go home factor? Enough respected posters on here have virtually said he is gone. That little dialogue from Jones confirms it for mine. While the club isn't saying anything, giving Lever and Jones the ok to say things like they "will support Jesse's decision, whatever he decides" is the club's way of preparing supporters for the departure of a fan favourite, as it is bound to upset many.
  18. Feel a bit for Dunne. He did the hard yards with us, didn't choose to leave and didn't mess us around when it was time to go. Found a niche for himself and has performed well. Missing out on a career long dream is tough especially has he may not get many more chances. Not barracking for the Pies tho'...
  19. All that is true why are GCS happy to let him go? They need as much experience/talent as they can get. If they aren't offering him a contract he will be delisted and he can anywhere he likes with no pick back of any sort. It doesn't compute...
  20. Interesting that in the last few years we have let go two 'gorilla' type defenders and an intercept defender in Frawley, Dunne and Howe. We are now replacing them with the likes of Lever and maybe May. In the meantime our 'rejects' have gone on to win a premiership, play in a grand final and if Dunne wasn't injured he would also be playing tomorrow. Not at all suggesting we should have kept the 3. They all needed a fresh start and we got fair value. Just reflecting on how ironic the AFL trade merry-go-round can be...
  21. Post it in the 'Rumour' thread - no need to spill the beans, just a few clues will do... Include a few red herrings if necessary; even a riddle or two... ?

It works the same way as the 17 yo pre-list GWS had. It is how we got Hogan.

Carlton/GCS must pick 'mature age' players (no picks involved). The player is then tradeable for a pick or player.
  24. We are ok for picks and vacancies - 6 of each excluding Kent trade. Assuming we get a pick for him and then have 7 picks for 7 vacancies (or if we get a player (unlikely) it will still be 6 for 6). But the last two picks are 84 and 106, picks that aren't generally taken tp the draft. But we can use them to upgrade two of our Rookies (eg Keilty, Maynard or T Smith). If we do those upgrades we have a reasonable draft hand with 5 picks (32, 43, 46, 56 + Kent pick), and 5 vacancies. So no problems at this stage.
