NON-MFC: Community Series
I haven't been watching games today. How is the 50m rule going?

Top Spot Up for Grabs!
Can the girls emulate the men and snatch top spot on the last game? Nothing in it at this stage. Current Ladder: Thoughts: We must win to guarantee a top 2 spot. Lose and Brisbane, who play after us, could overtake us on %. Adelaide vs Saints is at Moorabbin which is much larger than their home ground, maybe limiting their scoring ability. While Casey is a ground advantage for us the conditions will make it hard for us to kick a big score. The big advantage of finishing 1st is that the highest placed team in the GF gets the Home ground. Its unlikely to see the ladder positions change. A top 2 spot gives us a Home prelim and a week off before that game. Assuming both Adelaide and Melbourne win next week, top spot will come down to %. At this stage their is nothing in it. Then: If we get top spot our prelim is vs the winner of semi final between 4 and 5, currently North and Fremantle. Most likely Fremantle. If we get 2nd spot our prelim is vs the winner of semi final between 3 and 6, currently Brisbane and Collingwood. Most likely Brisbane We can beat any of those teams in a prelim, especially at Casey. Top spot will be nice to get the Home GF (assuming we win the Prelim). But I doubt the GF will be at Casey as not many people can fit in. A few years ago they got 40,000+ at Adelaide Oval. My guess is if we get there, it will be at Marvel stadium, which should suit us very nicely with the roof closed. As Adelaide were beaten at Home by Bulldogs and North nearly beat them there today I reckon we can beat them there. So bring it on! And, Go Dees!!

GAMEDAY: AFLW Rd 09 vs Fremantle
Overjoyed with our win. Very impressed with field kicking and the distances our girls were able to kick it. Feel a bit sorry for Freo. Hope we don't meet them in the finals - they will be out for revenge and are good enough to extract it. But if we do it will be at Casey; our fortress!!

GAMEDAY: AFLW Rd 09 vs Fremantle
North look too far behind on % to dislodge us from top 2. Lions are the only likely threat but everything would need to go right for them: two huge wins vs North and Bulldogs plus we lose to Carlton. North and Bulldogs (if Coll lose today) have a lot to play for so don't see those games as easy wins for the Lions. It would be nice to for Coll to get over the Crows today.

POSTGAME: Community Series vs Carlton
We also gave up a few 50m for 'delaying' when players asked who had the free. It took about 15 seconds. Is that delaying? I would say not? And, Oliver was pinned 50m for giving ball to teammate thinking he had the free. The umps need to not be so whistle happy when it isn't clear who has the free, or the infringement wasn't in line of sight of the player collecting the ball. Or stand next to and point to the player who has the free. Perhaps, it is best to let opps players collect the ball themselves. That is what some other teams do. As an aside, I wonder how many 50m the whingeing cats give up. Good chance by the time they play their game the umps put the whistle away for 50m...

Gary Pert on Sportsday (3/4/22)
In my defence, I didn't attribute the 'no longer at the club' to Pert. And you are quite right Pert didn't use those words nor directly answer the question. I took Pert's response (to the question 'that the person is no longer at the club' @ 7.10 minute mark) along the lines of it is ...something that we dealt with...its not reflective of events in recent times...he has never seen the organisation as aligned as it is now... (my abbreviating and paraphrasing) as an indication the answer was: that person(s) is/are in the past. But sure, I can see how Pert's comments could be interpreted differently.

Gary Pert on Sportsday (3/4/22)
Confidential board documents + No longer at the club = B-----tt At least he waited until last season was over and we won the cup before spilling the beans. Could have seriously set us back years or even a decade if he had done it during 2021 and possibly we lost our coach. Small mercies.

It all depends on one's perspective. I thought about 90% of comments are fair, especially those made after an hour the game finished

POSTGAME: Community Series vs Carlton
Our premiership backline would have struggled given that we lost clearances 26 : 49 (even though we won the hit outs). They beat us at our own game: quick breaks from centre bounces or spread with overlapping run. In future I hope Gus goes back to the wing. We really missed his defensive work when Carlton were going forward. We may need to manage our young players who have only a couple of preseasons. Most had their first full year of games playing 20-25 games in 2021 and backing up on a shortish preseason with relatively 'unhardened' AFL bodies will take its toll, especially later in the season.

Try this: Loyal-melbourne-members-to-be-featured-on-historic-flag Scroll down and click on 'Download' then zoom in and scroll around. It was a real thrill to find my name. I unexpectedly choked up.

Salem will probably only miss this one game. I would tip Bowey to play Salem's role and Hunt🙂🙃 to get his job back.

Are we capitalising on our on-field successes?
Agreed on the future and strategic planning. I said similar in my post earlier in this thread albeit it was planning around funding, use and sponsorship of our new facilities. I guess by the last sentence you mean Casey and surrounds. Yes, I would also like to see us develop that market as well. We have a red and blue presence through the VFL/W and AFLW and it is our training ground for at least this year. If we don't make the most of that presence other clubs will move in. Its a short hop for the Hawks in Dingley, Saints in Bayside etc. I'll give the club the benefit of the doubt and say that covid restrictions have made this difficult for the last few years but yeah I would like to see a plan on how we develop this area and make it a heartland. The club did a fantastic job of harnessing support in Perth with giveaways, a demon van and lots of other stuff so we have the know how. Would love to see them make a long term commitment to a campaign there. Sadly, I fear they won't and that it may go the way of the Bentleigh Club. Up until 8 years ago it was a welcoming place to watch the footy with other dedicated dees fans. After a while it became an insufferable experience.

Cerra or Walsh? Laughable. That poster should look at this: or this http://resources1.news.com.au/images/2015/08/01/1227466/193257-0fed81ee-3823-11e5-9c70-bb8d701e73e2.jpg or this http://cdn.makeagif.com/media/8-05-2015/KQptw2.gif or this http://cdn.newsapi.com.au/image/v1/657e21f9766e3a695b485170cb911cb3?width=650 or this http://i.imgur.com/kUIOtfd.gif Dammit, that poster can read the whole 'Jack made them cry' thread. Jack takes on some of the biggest and toughest players in the game. Cerra and Walsh have talent but have yet to show an ounce of aggro. Jack will eat them for breakfast!! Edit: Sorry about the gif links. Pics copied from the Jack thread but for some reason they appear as links instead. Oh well, you all know how the story goes

Are we capitalising on our on-field successes?
What you know is yours to keep. No problem. I think we all want our club to capitalise on opportunities. Genuine question: what things would you like done?

MFC AGM
Football staff don't usually attend the AGM do they? Did any of them participate in the AGM last night?
-
MFC AGM
Thanks. Not being a zoom user I wasn't aware it was of its capabilities. Nonetheless, given that the recent fan Forum was neither zoom nor live with members it does leave one wondering about level of member involvement or access to the senior parts of our club.
-
MFC AGM
With no covid restrictions any reason this was zoom only with no live audience? The BnF had an audience so can't see why members couldn't go to the AGM.

PREGAME: Community Series vs Carlton
Thanks, I hadn't seen that. Its a shame for Rivers 3-4 weeks but it gives the likes of Hunt a chance to get his spot back. Looks like we will have 3 tall fwds plus Jackson/Gawn resting forward. We experimented with that a few years ago and iirc it didn't go well so it will be interesting to see how it goes this time. I guess that is what practice matches are for.

So Salem's injury may be more than has been reported. Best to get him (and others) cherry ripe for March 16.

Are we capitalising on our on-field successes?
I'm in the it is 'too early to judge' camp. Some ways we will capitalise on our premiership: Membership is growing. We should expect our gate takings to go through the roof, even without the ANZAC Eve and QB game this year, as more dee fans come to games. And opp fans will come if they expect to see a good game, which they will. We have been rewarded with Home games vs the Big clubs at the G this year: Ess (when was the last time that happened...), Collingwood, Carlton and Hawthorn. Merchandising will continue to sell well. If we play PF and GF for the next 5 years watch all those numbers grow. We will have capitalised on our success. It is more the medium term that I wonder about. Even tho we don't have any info of what, when and where of our new facilities, I would like to know the club has a plan for: funding, community use of the facilities, support of important social issues. Someone mentioned 'Reach'. Great idea. True connection to our past not something adopted for the sake of looking to have a social conscience. If the club needs member funding start the fundraising now! No better time to cash in on our success. And, I hope they have started looking for naming rights sponsors etc etc. Such a plan need not be a secret nor wait for a government announcement, which seems to be the reason we don't know where the facility will be. Maybe after the season is on the way, the premiership glow subsides we will hear what the plan is for funding and use of the facilities.

I'm pretty sure in a DL podcast a few years ago either Jackson or Roos said they do. Presumably that practice would have continued during Pert's reign.

Daisy weighs up offer to join Geelong as AFL Assistant Coach
I was referring to her Friday night role on Ch 7. Do you mean the coaching gig is one day a week?
