Just when you thought we may have been implementing cultural change
rjay replied to Gorgoroth's topic in Melbourne Demons
The Dawes one I'm still not sure of 'Curry', Collingwood took Broomhead with that pick but if the didn't have the 3 in a row it would be interesting which 2 of him Grundy and Kennedy they would have taken. But you are right the late picks would have been speculative anyway. The only argument for the lower picks is that we could have used one to upgrade Magner or picked up a player like Hannath maybe. -
LeCras is a strong forward equally as good in the air as on the ground who until his knee gave out last year was being groomed to play as a mid, they thought he had too much talent to lock him up as a forward. Would take him in a heartbeat. The point I was making was about the Milne,Betts and Garlett type players who will become extinct if they can't adapt. We pick up Byrnes who Geelong see only as a small forward and hasn't fit their game plan for a few years now. Their small forwards are players like Chapman, Taylor-Hunt as part of a tagging role, Christiansen, Stokes, Duncan, Selwood, Bartell, Johnson and co who all rotate through the midfield. The position small forward (my definition) is in my mind a waste of space 'Stuie' and I think you actually agree by the examples you have given (Johnson, Jetta).

Interesting thinking 'Pennant', I wouldn't rule out us taking Boyd all the same if he was there for us. If he is what he is cracked up to be with Hogan it could make a great combination and free up Clark to play in the ruck giving us the extra mid like Cox rather than down a mid with Jamar. But I do like your thinking.

You're right, it's not but there's nothing they can do about it. End of story.
-
Your turning it around 'Stuie' to try and prove an argument that is not in play. A small forward definition, Milne can't play in other positions and takes up a valuable position that could be better used by Stevie J who can. My argument is rather than have a one trick pony, small forward we really need mids who can kick goals. A small forward as some of our people here have been crying out for over the last year or so is a wasted position in my opinion. Let's forget the definitions who would you prefer, Stevie J or Milne? Bartell or Garlett? O'Keefe or Byrne?

'Stuie' you cantankerous bugger, I'm sure you know I mean dedicated small forward. To me they are a waste of space and thinking back on my post even Cyril plays mid. Milne has been the pick of the bunch over the last 10 years and he has had little to no influence in big games, you can't be a one trick pony. Give me Stevie J and Jimmy and I'll take em in a heartbeat, well rounded players who can and do play multiple positions and can go forward and kick goals. Jetta a speedy wingman who after his initial troubles kicking his first goal now is a consistent scorer from 50 mtrs. I'll take the goal kicking mids and you have Milne, Betts and Garlett. No thanks. That's about it.

...and that's it in a nutshell.

Wing...last time I looked it was part of the midfield. Ever wonder why Milne struggles in big games, to easy to put him out of the game and he has nowhere else to go. As a mid/forward if he was developed that way he would be much more dangerous that's why Lyon gives Ballantine some up the ground time.

It's time for Watts to leave - according to Barrett
rjay replied to Redjacket's topic in Melbourne Demons
Watts is a utility a bit like what Howe is doing now and what Goddard does, a bit forward a bit mid and a bit floating back. Will add to our midfield depth. Get him in the side and get the ball to him, he is our best user of the ball. -
Unfortunately for us Denham has been right with a lot of things he has said. CEO first then we look at the other positions but not a bad idea, Daniher.

I don't buy this at all. I know it's the conventional wisdom, but one moment does not wreck a career unless it is an injury you don't come back from. Jack has been sheltered behind rubbish like this for a long time now and it doesn't cut it for me. Probably not a great decision by the club but the tripe that's been talked about it since...we are talking about an elite level sportsman and if he can't shake this off he shouldn't be taking the cash. The Collingwood game would be the least of his problems, Neeld's handling of him may be a bigger one. -
Just when you thought we may have been implementing cultural change

Step one is to appoint a new CEO, nothing further should happen until then. It is the most important appointment for this club going forward and I would hope the AFL are actively involved in the appointment to the level of yes or no. I don't trust our current board to make the right choice. -

You are too close to the club so hardly an objective observer 'Satyriconhome'. Not saying you are right or wrong but your view is as coloured as any that you are accusing. -

I'm agreeing with you 'Macca' on the winning thing that's why I'm saying the only KPI that counts is the scoreboard. They can talk anything else they want but they must talk wins, that's what the game is all about. Winning breeds winning, look at Geelong they may be down and out but still find ways to win. -

As you know 'Macca' the only KPI that matters is the scoreboard, the rest is just theoretical BS. -
Too early to say we stuffed up (again) in not picking Wines?
rjay replied to P-man's topic in Melbourne Demons
How many do you think 'Bob' and who? By the way I think there are more than the 2 inside ball winners at Sydney, but then again I think the good ones are inside and out. I would put both Kennedy and O'keefe in that mould along with Bolton, Hannaberry, Jack & McVeigh just off the top of my head. -

I would take best available, if he is the same quality as Hogan, Patton or Cameron you would have to take him. Dawes just may not come up at all and Clark would be a great ruck/forward option. Trade for a good mid and pick up a free agent. -
When we had the ball, we were good downhill skiers.
