Biffen replied to rjay's topic in Melbourne Demons
The best way to deal with this is burn the joint to the ground and round up anyone ever involved with the club and put them on trial. -

Good for you. I look at the outcomes and not the stated intentions of the leaders. It's not a country that fits neatly into the communist narrative of universal and total failure because it has an incredibly resilient populace. There is still significant repression in Vietnam combined with a remarkably agile capitalism. The ethnic tensions inside Vietnam are not something I understand although I know the borders we recognise are not reflective of their ancient cultures and tribes. The South still hate the North as a general rule. -
And off the chain.

I'm quietly optimistic this year for some reason. Very little rerasoning behind it but just a gut feeling we are in for a very good year.

First Lord of the Navy-so he commanded the Admirals. And the Royal Navy by extension. As to your point-you don't have one. -

Yes- another drunken friend of mine likened Ho Chi Minh to a glorious freedom fighter. Unfortunately his results were famine, genocide, poverty and disaster- as with ALL adherents to Marxist philosophy. Why people keep repeating “ but that wasn’t real communism” is beyond me. The results never vary. -

Agree. The thread is now the mental equivalent of a face piercing performed by a leper in a filthy prison with rusty nail. A painful experience - distorted and ridiculous. -

You are clearly not well. He commanded the Navy. Many books have been written on it. Gallipoli was such a failure he considered suicide for years. Why do you argue idiotic things? -

It doesn't excuse him anything. It was a bad decision made in the Dardanelles. One of many. His remorse and self loathing from such failures may have contributed to his greatness in WW2 .Who knows. It's as pointless to speculate his failures as it is to contemplate those of Captain James Cooks. They are meaningless without the contrating achievements . -

You could link it directly to the Clunes riots. The Port Phillip mining company did not like paying the White anglo( mostly Cornish actually) miners at the rate commanded by the fledgling ALP. -

There are first hand accounts of life in Sydney and Hobart in Georgian Times . I can say with tremendous certainty that the British were far more humane and civil than the French and Dutch of the same era. The conflicts of the time we’re not due to a “ policy” by the British. Quite the opposite. Inevitable perhaps, but not deliberate. -
