Twist in race for Port star, Pie weighs options, Tigers' bid to keep mid - https://www.afl.com.au/news/1195697 THE UNCERTAINTY facing Melbourne's off-season has thrown Dan Houston's move to the Dees into question, with other Victorian clubs expected to enter the race for the Port Adelaide star. Houston has eyed a return to Victoria, where he has a strong pull back home, in recent months, with Melbourne his fancied landing spot. Rival clubs expected the move to be all but locked in. However, the Demons' tumble down the ladder out of the finals race, coupled with list uncertainty on superstar midfielder Christian Petracca, has raised doubts over Houston's preference for the Dees. It is a significant twist that opens the door for other clubs to enter the conversation for Houston if he continues to pursue a move back to Victoria or could even see him end up remaining at Alberton Oval if no club is willing to offer considerable draft capital to make a trade happen. The Power have been targeting Greater Western Sydney's unrestricted free agent pair Harry Perryman and Isaac Cumming, even before Houston's Victorian intentions were clear. They would need strong draft return to part with Houston, who is contracted for four more years and enjoying career-best form over the past two seasons. Richmond (pick one), North Melbourne (two), St Kilda (five), Melbourne (six), Essendon (nine), Carlton (10), Hawthorn (11) and Geelong (15) are the Victorian clubs currently holding first-round picks, although the Hawks' selection will be the centrepiece of their offer to West Coast for Tom Barrass. – Callum Twomey

Jack Viney Extends Contract Until 2028
Alas wasn't my doing. I posted this in another Viney related thread and I presume an admin created this one and moved it here.

Jack Viney Extends Contract Until 2028
OOC in 2025 I believe. Wouldn't surprise me if we added 1 year to 2026 with KPI's to trigger one more to 2027.

Jack Viney Extends Contract Until 2028
Not sure if there was a specific thread re the North speculation so will pop some news here. On today's gettable episode they stated Jack is in talks to have a contract extension at the dees and won't leave melbourne. "He's melbourne through and through." Bloody oath he is.

Farewell Alex Neal-Bullen
We will miss him. From the outside looking in appears to be a genuine leader and hard worker. Seems like a top bloke off the field as well. Considering what he has given us, I hope we won't stand in his way of his desire to be closer to family. In regards to trade value, 2nd rounder seems reasonable. If tied into a Houston trade, I could see it being ANB plus f1st for Houston and f2nd.

Trade Targets
Couldn't really tell you to be honest. I remember being impressed with him 2 years ago with his contested footy. Was injured for most of 2023. Havent watched much of Adelaide this year, maybe some SA dees/footy watchers could enlighten us about his deficiencies?

Trade Targets
Wonder if Sam Berry would be worthy of consideration? Tacking machine that's been in and out of the Crows team a bit this year. Out of contract and Vic lad. Won't be a star but could really add to our midfield depth and shouldn't cost much.

Welcome to Demonland: Max Gawn
Pretty sad state of affairs when a Tom Morris tweet generates 26 pages and 600+ posts of discussion and angst within 24 hours, yet the original thread on our generational skipper and one of our all time greats has a total of 2 pages and 46 posts in 14 years. Back to Max, what a legend and future hall of famer. It's been a privilege to watch his career and can only hope he has another few years yet in the tank. Agree with distrAction Jackson that he deserves a statue.

NON-MFC: Round 22
Demonland started a thread about this but it's hiding away in the other sports section. Jess Stenson just came 13th in the marathon not long ago. Bloody huge effort. Sister of Jack Trengove.

13th... bloody amazing effort.

Dan Houston
That's what I hope for, but he's a damn good player and is contracted for another 3 years. Port aren't going to settle for chump change.

Sounds like we're trading for him and we're probably going to have to make peace with the fact it will cost us pick 6.

NON-MFC: Round 22
Could end up being pick 6 - 8 for Schultz. Freo are laughing. Let's also not forget that Collingwood traded out their 2021 1st round pick the year prior for picks 24, 30 and future 4th in preparation for Nick Daicos. Collingwood slid down the ladder and had they retained their pick they could've had Finn Callaghan as well as Daicos. They've been burned pretty badly so far on future pick trading.

2024 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch
Playing devils advocate here in regards to Dan Houston and trading out our first rounder. Perhaps this is the draft where giving up a top 10 pick for an established gun like Houston won't come back to bite us? Given the evenness of the draft pool and Cal reportedly saying its a deep draft but the top picks lacking last year's star power, I can see a world where we give up pick 6-8 and trade picks into the late first round/early second round. Not saying its the way to go, but if we turned pick 6 into Dan Houston and a mid we are happy with then it's perhaps worthy of consideration. Looking at Cals July phantom form guide, these are the midfieldeds in the back end of the first round currently/early 2nd. 16. Xavier Lindsay 19. Cooper Hynes 20. Tom Gross 22. Christian Moraes If we can somehow turn 6 into Houston and one of the above, that's doesnt sound like a bad outcome. Obviously there will most likely be more trade capital used to make that happen.

Port fans on bigfooty, so take with a grain of salt, believe Houston to Melbourne is pretty much a done deal and will likely involve 2 x first rounders. One apparently has a reputation for being itk. While I would love to get him, I'm worried about the cost and hope we have a plan to dilute our picks so we can take at least one first rounder ourselves to the draft. If it does eventuate, we need to talk to teams like Freo and Gold Coast to see if they have interest in pick swaps.
