Is he tall and agile enough to be a spoiler now? I like him forward. Not the worst idea I have heard, however. But I would hate to have a sooky captain captaining in the backline!

What happened there I was out of town in 08?
-
In the immediate future this pushes Martin out, right? I'm confused, how does this work.. he is a ruckman who can play forward but apparently better in the ruck. Do we make Jamar the stay at home forward and let Clark take over rudck duties or do we just plonk Clark in the square and use him as the stay at home forward. Can we play Jamar Martin and Clark in the same team? Thread needed on how this impacts our current ruck stocks please.

Sorry if I come across as patronizing to you. You are right. Captain is just a title. Leaders do lead with or without said title. But the key point you are missing is that those that need a captain- usually the impressionable younsters- will look to this captain and sometimes mimic his actions. Good, bad or whatever. This is why you need a good captain who exudes confidence. Not a sook who giggles when the heat is on. It all boils down to what kind of example you want to set to the non leaders. And before you say leaders can lead without the title again- it is the player with the title of captain which consciously or subconsciously sets the tone for the followers more so than any other leader on the field without said title.

Well one is proven- the other is a kid who probably still has pimples. I'm all for Clark but I am scared. How is this going to impact on our ruck division as it is now, and how is this going to affect the Martin/Jamar combo thing we have going? Is this going to push Gawn to look for new opportunities? Someone start a thread on this. We need answers!

See we will bump heads on this forever, as you don't believe it changes the onfield performance and I do. Young players look to the captain. The impressionable ones may think it's ok to replicate some of their negative actions out on the field. You may not see it as a big thing, but having a captain out there that sets the right example is huge in bringing about a winning culture. The Cousins/Judd scenario was different- that was a decision based on appeasing media/possibly fans. I stand by my comment that you have never played a team sport son. If you had you would understand the importance of your captain.

800K a season? LOL Tell him his dreaming! edit- ok I just read the article- it's "up to" 800 a season, so not definitive. Also surely pick 12 would get it done- don't offer a compo pick as well as Brisbane either take it or let him go for free a la Ball at St Kilda.. I'm happy we are chasing a big forward aggressively. How is this going to affect Martin I wonder...

If he goes in the draft GWS will surely pick him up, so obviously that will be avoided. If he truly wants to return home we should stay away. Sure-ask if they are his true intentions or just a ruse, but I don't want to draft him if his heart and mind are in WA and then he does a $ully on us and leaves after 2 years. What do they say? Once burned, twice ahh you can't burn me twice!

Be that as it may Darling is physically ready to play now, and Cook isn't.. so it is kind of hard to judge Cook at all right now. Will have to re-visit in a few years. FWIW I rate Darling, but Cook could be so much more. Time will tell. And with that I feel this thread will die.

If I have missed the point, you don't even have a clue what the point is. Changing captain won't change our fortunes around 180- as it won't for any team. The lift in the teams output may only be marginal, but in sport even a 1% improvement is massive. It could mean the difference between losing a tight one and getting over the line. I don't mean to offend you, mate- but it is glaringly obvious you have never played a team sport. Because if you did you would understand the importance of the right captain with the right attitude.

His positioning and reading of the play, he has a beautiful kicking action and a good set of mits. His under-developed body is what's holding him back in my eyes. He will be a ripper and people will be saying WhoTF is Darling in a couple of seasons time.

LOL Even with "a million" coaches and support staff every group still needs a leader, it is an intrinsic value in any group. You have followers and leaders. The leaders (captain) sets the tone for the followers to replicate. Support staff and coaches don't lead on the field, you need a captain to do that, son! And you are kidding me if you say changing captain wouldn't affect the way we play. Who would you rather follow into battle; Spartacus or Steve Erkel?

I hope not. That would be the ultimate sook! If that was true (which I doubt) that would make me think we are weak. I don't think we're weak, but if Green has the captaincy next year I may change my mind. Green is to captaincy what Ke$ha is to civility and grace.

Tim Harrington's cautious approach to the mini-draft
Jesse Christ replied to Supreme_Demon's topic in Melbourne Demons
Is there a real estate thread on Demonland this conversation can take place, cos it's starting to stray away from draft talk metaphor into actual real estate talk. Back to the topic at hand people. We didn't pay what we perceived to be overs on what is essentially an un-tried commodity. Simple. So now we move back in with the parents, save some more money, and go out again and hit the market when the time is right for us! There's your real estate analogy [censored]! -
GWS draft strategy and diminishing returns.
Jesse Christ replied to pitchfork's topic in Melbourne Demons
They'd want to hope this is a ripper draft! I don't feel as intimidated about GWS than I do about GC. I have a feeling once all the kiddies have the opportunity to GTFO of Blacktown they will take with no hesitation. This club-this experiment will be nothing but fail. I understand why the AFL want GWS, but that doesn't mean I can't laugh and applaud their demise. -

I would sell him one, it will be termite infested and be insulated with feces. -

I would never buy a house from Sheedy. -
These guys are going to be a big threat to us (GC) Enticing a star or two out of their clutches would be a good tactical move. Best to make your strongest enemies weaker. Go for it.

I'm glad common sense prevailed. Now strip him of the captaincy and give it to Moloney so he can keep it warm for Trengove/Watts/Grimes or whoever.
