  1. If you think we're being critical, try talking to Essendon supporters about him. They are enraged by his defection and actively wish that he be badly injured!
  2. Tom Wills, although might not meet the modern definition of "first class cricketer" given he played before the concept of "first class cricket" was known.
  3. Didn't I read somewhere that the "external review" at Carlton is going to be done by PWC? If that's right (and someone please correct me if I'm mistaken), I'm not sure how "external" that is given the incoming President of Carlton, Luke Sayers, is the recently resigned CEO of PWC Australia.
  4. So, he's a "dominant narrow minded individual who would clash with others" and a "decent bloke". Interesting combination.
  5. He did a year (or 2?) in the media after finishing as a player and was excellent. That's what I expect he'll be doing next year. I also believe he won't be lost to football and in good time will pick up another significant position such as Football Manager or some development role at AFL HQ.
  6. That's unfair. I think it's much more likely they think Machiavelli is a pasta option at McDonalds.
  7. "resigned to the fact" or "pleased with the fact"? If I were Hawthorn, I could see Clarkson leaving as a positive as it allows a refresh with Sam Mitchell in charge. In fact, it would be a win-win-win-win (Collingwood-Hawthorn-Clarkson-Mitchell)
  8. It will be interesting to see how Robert Harvey goes. It's been well known that he wants a senior coaching role. But how many times have clubs been persuaded by the short-term results of an interim coach and felt compelled to give them the job permanently? It worked for Sydney and Paul Roos, but I suspect there have been more misses than hits. Examples of "mistakes" include Rhyce Shaw, Geoff Gieschen, and possibly David Teague. All perfectly fine Assistant Coaches but unable to succeed when given the top job after stepping in before the end of the season.
  9. There's a brief article in today's Snap Shot in "The Age" which points out that Harry Graham was the first non-Englishman to make a century on debut at Lord's. The article from Peter Ryan also points out that Graham played two games for Melbourne in 1900. They were both wins against Carlton and Essendon. So, Graham made a 100 at Lord's and has a 100% win record playing for the MFC in, cough, nineteen hundred. (The Graham part is the second story in Snap Shot. And if it's behind a paywall, don't worry. There's not much more to the story than the above.)
  10. Thanks. So, in summary, it's a meaningless number unless you add to the story that its out of a total potential audience of about 390,000,000 (population of Australia multiplied by 15 games).
  11. It's an interesting article, but I don't understand this sentence: "AFL Executive General Manager Inclusion & Social Policy Tanya Hosch said she was pleased to see an average television audience of 7.75 million people across Australia tune in to the broadcasts of the 2021 Toyota AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round." What does an "average television audience of 7.75 million people" mean? Whatever it means, I'm very doubtful that the number (whatever it's measuring) was 7.75 million people. That's about one-third of the total population of Australia. Maybe she didn't mean "average" and meant cumulative audiences?
  12. If this was politics rather than football, you'd automatically assume Barker was leaving to mount a challenge for the leadership (head coach role). I can't recall anything similar happening in AFL, so I assume that's not what's happening here. Or is it...
  13. I suspect basic economics makes a 3rd training base unviable. The ongoing costs of all these facilities have to be paid for somehow. If a 3rd training base can be made self-sufficient, then I'm all for it. I just don't see it happening.
  14. To deter people from being deterred, I've had the AZ shot and had no side effects except a possible mild headache for about 1 hour the following day. (I say "possible", because the headache might have been unrelated to the vaccination.) Go get vaccinated as soon as you can, people.
  15. Seemed to me he played the Jordon inside role while Jordon played Langdon's outside role. Sparrow even seemed to match Jordon's standard time on ground when playing as an inside mid. As an aside, it was interesting to see that Jordon had zero tackles on Friday. Before this game he was averaging 6.7 per match.
  16. Completely agree with you. However, I suspect the point she was trying to make was an attempt to explain why she had the Pfizer instead of AZ vaccine. It would be because the second dose of the former is given three weeks later (and before any possible trip to Tokyo) while the AZ second dose is given 12 weeks after the first, which might be too late. Nevertheless, clumsy messaging.
  17. I think all my wife's suggestions are petty. She disagrees, of course.
  18. Given I can't discern any link between this data and ladder position, can't say that I care.
  19. Only if you beat Hawthorn as well.
  20. And here's a picture taken of the crowd cheering at the game
  21. I'm sure I speak for all Demonlanders when I pass on my condolences to you and your family.
  22. I think we'll have to agree to disagree. In my view, a journalist is a professional occupation which requires formal quals (or relevant experience over many years) and an understanding of concepts such as public interest, ethics and protection of sources. A part-time sports commentator can be a journalist, but most are not. Dermott Brereton and Daisy are definitely not journalists under my definition. we're not the only ones who disagree. The definition of "journalist" is a sensitive legal area right now. Just ask Julian Assange or those wishing to extradite him to the US.
  23. The 200 GF? That is a long time ago!
  24. If the stereotyping is correct and the titans of industry are primarily Melbourne supporters, then I fear for the economic future of this country. Productivity amongst all Melbourne supporters is likely at an all-time low given the distractions caused by the team actually being good.,
