  1. I suspect TOG is, in itself, not significant. More important measures are likely to be heart rate (compared with the player's baseline), kms travelled and speed, which are all measurable in real time. In addition, TOG does not tell us how much is onball and how much might be "resting" in the forward line, although I accept that "resting" is probably not the right word to use.
  2. I know we now live in the world of Big Lies and allegedly fake news, but unless people here have facts at their disposal, I suggest they be very careful about claiming specific individuals are biased.
  3. I think "an element of manipulation" equals "rigged". And I don't think it happens in AFL or NRL. (However, I note that Peter V'Landy's idea for NRL splitting into two conferences, one with all Sydney teams and one without, would ensure a Sydney team plays in the Grand Final every year. That's structural manipulation.)
  4. I think it's too late. The people of Sydney (and NSW) have been fed a consistent diet of anti-authoritarianism for so long via 2GB and the Murdoch press that I don't trust the Sydney population to stick to the lockdown and mask rules the way people in other Australian States and territories have done. That may mean AFL games won't be held in Sydney for quite some time yet as the other State and Territories may not allow teams that play there to return home without quarantine.
  5. I find it amusing that every time there is a discussion about days and timeslots, there seems to be equal numbers of people for and against any timeslot proposed. The possible exception is the 4.40 pm Sunday slot when played in Melbourne which I think nobody likes.
  6. What was this thread about? Seems to have been somewhat derailed. Perhaps time to close it.
  7. Where's a maths teacher when you need one? I can't explain it in simple terms, but while 5 heads in a row doesn't impact the next coin toss, over time, the number of heads and tails (assuming an unbiased coin) will eventually revert to the mean, which in this case is 50% heads and 50% tails. If Margetts is impartial, then his performance in the next game he umpires is independent of the previous games he umpired. As such, games in which he is involved, if he's impartial, should over time have a win rate consistent with our long term win rate. If, however, he is not impartial, forget the law of large numbers. It doesn't apply.
  8. I often wonder what the 'S' in GWS stands for. Thanks for clearing that up.
  9. Quote: "James Jordon’s pressure point are down from 63 to 29 per game" This might be because his role has changed rather than fatigue. Earlier in the season he was an on-baller; in the last week or two he has spent more time on the wing.
  10. Thanks RedFox. To clarify are you saying that 1 point is given for no pressure but in open play; 2 points is given for each incident of corralling pressure, closing pressure and chasing pressure and 3 points is given for providing physical pressure?
  11. I think Brad Scott is already at the AFL as Head of Victorian Football (or perhaps something else). His name has been floated as a potential replacement for Steve Hocking but whether there's any substance to the idea or whether some working in the media were just spitballing I have no idea. (Imgaine that. The footy media making things up!)
  12. Sorry Binman. I had to preserve this for posterity before you edit it. I, too, am troubled by being gatgued. And if we're doing training loafs, I hope they're wholemeal.
  13. Plus Brad Scott, Michael Voss, Justin Leppitsch, Matthew Knights and others. Not sure if any of them are interested, but each should be better second time around.
  14. Nicely ambiguous. I assume you mean he's been successful as an asisstant rather than the alternative interpretation that players and clubs liked him better after he left.
  15. Pressure has been given a numeric rating for both the team and individual players. It therefore follows that something quantitative is being measured which translates either directly or indirectly into "pressure". What exactly is used to measure pressure?
  16. I think the "agreement" is that assistant coaches are not approached during the season except for senior coaching roles. I don't think there's anything that says an assistant coach can't move between seasons. After all, how did Yze get to us?
  17. Isn't that a frame taken from the TV recording? I seem to recall that there was no professional photo taken at the time and that the person with the camera that flashed was sought out for her (his?) photo. If that amateur, well-timed photo was ever published, I've never seen it.
  18. Whether it is the best mark ever taken is arguable. What is not in question is how incredible the photo is. Perhaps only the photo of Shai Bolton's mark earlier this year is better.
  19. There are three ways to interpret this data when predicting for future games: When Margetts umpires the data suggests we're more likely to lose because our win rate with him umpiring is 33% worse than when he's not the umpire When Margetts umpires the data suggests we're more likely to win because the law of large numbers (otherwise known as "the law of averages") would indicate that the win rate with games he umpires should move toward the mean (ie, to get from 24% to 36% would require us to win more than we lose). The data is meaningless
  20. Earlier in the year, one of the broadcasters pointed out that set shot accuracy from sideways kicks is higher than for straightfoward drop punts. That may be why. However, that data needs to be looked at more closely. I suspect that the accuracy varies greatly with distance from goal. Tom McDonald was too far out for a sideways kick where I suspect the odds favour a straight run in. (Although I accept it worked for ANB).
  21. Really? Why do you say that? (Serious question.) I would have thought that Demetriou would win the "most disliked" prize.
  22. Bowey could come in if the Match Committee decided to persist with Hunt in the forward line in Pickett's place.
  23. Brad Scott is having a busy time. Isn't he also being suggested in some quarters as the next coach of Collingwood?
  24. Sorry. Missing some punctuation. That should read another S. Hocking decision. It has been announced that Steve Hocking has accepted appointment as Geelong's new CEO. It will be interesting to see how his time at AFL HQ will be remembered. Overall, I think he's been a positive, but that's not to say I agree with everything he's done.
  25. If Majak is the answer, what's the question? As a serious response, throughout his career Daw has shown occassional glimpses of ability but has been unable to show consistency. I still see him as a "break glass in case of emergency" type player and that emergency is probably only when all of Gawn, Jackson and Weideman are unavailable or if May and Lever are both unavailable. To Daw's credit, he's still a handy emergency choice.
