I think clubs like Collingwood have very strong connections with media powerbrokers (including people like Maguire) and therefore journalists are less inclined to throw as much dirt at the risk of their careers.

This is exactly how many journalists are operating now, link hearsay comments in a way that they know will misinterpreted. I have noticed this year many stories include the quoting of X sources who asked to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the matter. This is carte blanche to say whatever they want to and attribute it to nobody in particular and therefore can't be called out for it. McClure is one of the worst at this and it's little wonder his journalism award was rescinded.
