I like the accompanying omac highlights package from Monday's game. Its almost as if it were put together for this thread and/or to dispel some #Omacmyths. Some nice first half highlights. I also liked the fact the final highlight they play play to its conclusion - Watts' match winner!

I don't know why there is an issue with the 3 year deal. if he gets to the point where he is not earning regular senior selection i suspect he will retire and they will negotiate a reasonable pay out. With a bit of luck they might be able to keep him involved in the club as they have done so brilliantly with Crossy.

All good points TT and i'm in complete agreement with all the points. What i'd add is we need to add a couple more 'elite' kicks, particularly players who deliver the ball into our forward 50 and pull the trigger and kick accurately into the corridor. Both are critical elements in maximizing scoring opportunities. I agree its easier for defenders to hit targets, for the reasons you point out. What i would say is that when a defender turns the ball over it it can look worse because it can lead to opposition goals or at the least a scoring opportunity. But acknowledging it is usually (but not always) a more difficult kick. a player who misses an easy target inside 50 or in the corridor will cost us a goal or scoring opportunity. The outcome of the turnovers is exactly the same - well almost as scoring creates momentum and being scored against can stop momentum or give it to the opposition. But despite the outcome being the same, psychology suggests we think a goal or scoring opportunity to the opposition is worse, Going forward we missed so many targets in the first half against the pies -as we always seem to in first half. It mad it impossible for us take advantage of our period of advantage. I was listening to the SEN details podcast, which is ok, and they were rabbiting on about the fact that don't turn up to play until half time. Which i reckon is wrong and certainly was against the pies. We were switched on and ready - we just turn the ball over too many times and wasted our scoring opportunities. One kick that comes to mind is Hannan, under no pressure and after a terrific build up and ball movement, kicking to a player all by himself on the attacking edge of the center square. He kicked it over his head to a pies player who swept it down the ground as we were all pressed forward. it cost us a scoring opportunity and gifted them one - potentially a 12 pint swing. yet he cops little criticism. There were any number of similar turn overs. And much less defensive ones. Watching the dirge last night Jetta's kicking skills really stood out and i think ended up being the difference as WC wasted so many opportunities with poor kicking - both at goal but also field kicking. They dominated that match but only won by 13 because, like Melbourne, turned the ball over way too much

In their place we now have: #Omacmyths For example #Omacmyths he had a poor first half against the Pies, a myth repeated by no less a DL luminary as Demonland himself on the DL podcast (which by the has led me to lose a bit of faith in his football analysis skills - i mean even if his bias affected his judgement during the game i have to assume by Wednesday he had watched the replay, but perhaps not) and not challenged by Grapeviney. But there are so many others: not AFL standard, can't read the ball, no other team in the AFL would pick him, is only being picked to fast track his development etc etc. What's your favourite?

I watched the replay last night and focused on OMacs game looking for errors (in fact i ended up focusing on the errors of all the players, which was weird). As DA notes there were there were two errors from OMac in the first q from left foot clearing kicks. Funnily enough i had thought (and wrote) both lead to goals when in fact only the second did. The first went to a semi contest that Dunn easily marked - but it was closer to our HF than HB so a pretty standard clearing kick. On both sides i counted about 15 such kicks, including one from Hunt under no pressure who elected not go in board, not down the line and set up Sharenburg for an easy mark. One was from Lewis who had three possessions to half time and one was hack of the ground straight to a pies player. Salem did at least two, one directly causing a goal when he kicked it to a player 35 metres out 9Langdon?). The second did result in a goals and he was bagged by Whispers Watson. What was funny was the ball should not have been with OMac. Viney hacked kicked one from a contest that only went 15 metres and straight to Aish on the 50 metre line, who then pumped it back in. Watson criticized Salem and oMc for not handballing but i wonder if the direction from the coach is actually to try and clear the area with a kick such was the frequency players did such kicks rather than handball. It wouldn't be the first time Watson showed how clueless he is about the modern game. I actually wonder if OMacs harshest critics and/or those who think his first half was poor were watching the game on TV not live and were unduly influenced by the dingbat commentators ('the ball fell in his lap, he just put his hand out', 'you can't teach composure', 'he has to get better' etc etc) who know no more about OMac than they do about where Howe has played in the past, Those two bad kicks were OMacs only errors for the day that i saw - and i watched carefully. Two. His first quarter was actually better than i remembered. Lots of composed handballs and kicks that hit hit targets and a goal saving spoil that he followed up and earned a free kick. He was actually not that involved in the second, but made no mistakes and did his job and had a terrific second half. played well for the rest. He was on Moore for much of the game, however not on either occasion when he kicked his two goals OMac had a good game. Not great, but good. And a much better game than many of his teammates Compare his game to Salem who made at least 6 bad errors and cost us at least 4 goals with two within a minute. Or Lewis who had three possessions at the 10 minute mark of the 3rd, one of which was the aforementioned clanger. Or Hunt who continually kicked the ball to the opposition or helicopters into our forward line to the forward's disadvantage. Or Viney who only had 5 possession to half time, one of which was a clanger. Or ANB who twice missed players all alone in our forward line, Or Frost who twice got tackled trying to break lines, with the second resulting in pies game (which none the less earned praise from Whispers who said that's how he plays) and consistently mistimed his marking attempts.

You ignored two of my key points. Firstly, even with no Spencer they did not need to play him this week. They could have played Wagner who was dreadfully unlucky to be dropped. They only have one tall so no issue there. They didn't not because they had no option as some would like to believe but because he is in their best 22 and want him in the team not because of development but because they obviously think by having in the team it improved our chances of winning this critical match. And they played OMac all last season because.......

As i have been at pains to point out this is simply wrong. They didn't need him this week as they only have Moore and in any case Spencer was fit enough to play if they really felt OMac should not be playing. It also completely ignores the fact that at the start of the season when we had Hogan AND Gawn fit and playing he was selected, just as he was all last year. And next week Gawn or Spencer comes back so Tmac can go back with Pedo playing as the key forward as he did in the second half yesterday. Does anyone seriously think he will get dropped this week? Talk about damning with faint praise

Exactly. Two mistakes, both leading to a goal in the first quarter but did some other excellent things, including a fantastic goal saving spoil running back with the flight of the ball. Salem made a a couple of howlers, Frost twice ran himself into trouble and trac missed two dees players 30 metre out and kicked it straight to a pies player. All cost us goals. M Those two poor kicks were the only clangers he made all game. He saved a number of goals through great defensive efforts and helped set up the match winning goal. Played a big chunk of the second half injured.Salem made others and short armed a contest that cost us a goal. Frost was shaky at times and Hunt coughed up forward entries with really poor kicks all day. Meanwhile in that first half Lewis and Harmes might well have not played. As you say a good 4 Q game from Oscar.

I find it funny how many people on dl constantly point out how useless stats are. Probably the same people who yell 'just kick it' at the footy all day like it is still 1981. You only have to listen to coaches post match pressers or even those in match on ground chats to get a sense of how important stats in their totality (as opposed to isolated stats) are to clubs. Clubs that pay big dollars for the data, the software to analyse it and employees to pore over their and other clubs stats.

To be honest ive never said he is a star, or even will be. But i reckon he is progressing ok and at this stage of his career is comparable to his brother at the same stage.

Right about what? I posted the graphic to highlight what a great defender May is, this being a thread about May and all. Remarkably since the start of 2015 he has missed 11 games and the suns have lost them all. Critical player for them as are the other players at the top of team's lists. Some pretty good players at the top of those lists. Oh wait, i see what you're getting at. OMac tops ours Go figure.. Who would have thunk it? That Oliver lad seems to be pretty important also.

Honestly, you seem to have a significant problem with the English language, and in particular the meaning of words. Who said anything about bare minimums or minimum requirements? Until this post you did not mention anything about bare minimums or minimum requirements and nor did I. You challenged posters to give an example OMac's 'strong attributes'. Note you didn't say 'elite attributes', 'above average attributes' or anything similar. You used the phrase 'strong attributes'. Clearly he has a number of strong attributes. Otherwise he would not have been drafted by an AFL club, not would he be in the second year of an AFL career, playing regularly for a team that is on the improve and hoping to make finals. or for that matter a key player in back 6 that kept the premiership favorites - and highest scoring side in the league - to 10 odd goals on their home ground in near perfect conditions. I agree the qualities I listed as his 'strong points' are minimum requirements for a defender playing at this level. Strong attributes in other words. It makes no sense at all to suggest to he has no strong attributes. Plain silly. Similarly you stated he was not AFL standard. Despite the fact he is playing AFL and continues to get selected to play AFL senior football. And don't give me nonsense about not having other options. if he was not at AFL standard he would have been de-listed after his first season and if he had somehow avoided that fate would not be selected in the seniors this year. Again plain silly. Now to be clear i have not made similarly silly, black and white, definitive statements about OMac. He has a long way to go. We do need another defender and in particularly a really good defender like May or Lever. If we got one i believe (but will not state as fact as you seem so keen to do) he would remain in the team and be a very important tall running defender. But how about we agree to disagree and leave it there on the OMac topic. I think the one thing we can both agree on is we are not going to convince the other person our position is the correct one.

Surprise, surprise. A poster responds to your puerile offer of $10 to a poster to find 'one strong attribute that Oscar has to his game'. A poster responds with not one but two 'strong attributes' - one percenters (which is actually a goods stat in terms of assessing a players effort level) and endurance, which is an obvious strength of OMac. And you derisively reject both points. Classic case of confirmation bias if i ever saw one. OMac played well last week and was ok this week. And i watched both games. His effort, spoiling, ability to run back with the flight of the ball and not give away a free, his ability to play his part in a zone defense, his work ethic and his team first attitude are all strong attributes that Oscar brings to his game. You can give my $10 to Demonland.

Oliver has an incredible ability to step out of trouble (often retreating away from our goals) and with his amazing vision and decision making get us out of trouble with terrific handballs to teammates (often also backwards i've noted). I find it amazing how short into his career we have come to rely on him so much and how confident i am when he gets the ball. Also he might be one of those rare players who influence how the game is played. His handballing technique where he he holds it at eye height and punches it (rather than from a flat hand) gives him a huge advantage in clearances and getting the ball out quickly. It sometimes leads to him wrongly being pinged for throwing, though not last weekend i was pleased to see. it won't be long before other start to copy it. Does anyone know if he used this technique as a junior?

He is also very consistent, an great trait and one that can sometomes be under valued. Jetts is similarly consistent

Agree but also let give jack the credit for getting front position. On on the couch they were talking about the likelihood of teams only having the one ruck man and Jackson Trengove being the new model of the second ruck - a mobile, versatile player who plays forward but can be an on baller as well. Funny because Jack was really the first to play that role last year (a Goodwin innovation?)
