Take a look at the Freo forward line.

May and Lever should dominate in the air at the back. Even if we don’t convert well, we should win this comfortably

Good comment under normal circumstances But...

Where I live its currently blowing a gale and will be a windy game. This could negate the clear advantage we have in reading the ball in the air that Lever and May have. This is a real concern as I see these two saving/winning the game as key contributors under normal conditions.

It won't be the forard line

It’s an ok team until you hit the forwardline. I worry about the non-Langdon wing too.
Thank god May is playing. At least our backline and on ball brigade look very strong.

Great post jaded. My concerns in a nutshell. Esp the reference to God and steven may in the same sentence.

Jones t mac and anb got to be least impressive half forward line in the comp.

Didn't even watch the game. Same opening game every year for the exact same result.

If it was literally any two other teams I would have watched.

Same here.  Funniliy it didnt occur to me until watching the late news and saw the score.  I love AFL, but jeez give us a break on the opening fixture and do soemthing original.

Say, the 2 Grand finalists replaying,

Just love the reactions by supporters the morning after a match.

Carlton fans at work this morning -

“ We pick up Oscar on probably 100k for the season and in one half of footy he has shown more than McGovern has in 3 years and he’s on 700k plus a year.”

Give them a break though.  What they say is probably close to the mark.

I suggest it has way more to do with what the media want.

Exactly, such as Ch 7 demanding team releases at 6.30 pm to cooincide with their news bulletin. And their exclusivity beating early news from Ch 10 to the punch.

They pay the bills, they get what they want.  Not necessarily unfair.

My main concern, however, is bar access

Does anyone know the deal for getting booze?

Don't risk it.  You'll only miss seeeing one of Luke Jacksons 6 goals for the game.  Unless you go at half time .

If the changeover is 2.7ish from the previous season, then the non-changeover is 5.3ish. Hence, a team in the final eight the previous year is almost twice as likely to be in the eight the next year than fall out of it. If I'm predicting for a living, as are these 'pundits', I'm picking last year's eight to all make it as the mathematical odds favour that outcome above any other option.

Good point LDVC. Except that the chances of them being correct on the final 8 are largely zero.

Thus the irrelevancy of it all anyway.

  8. Its always interesting to read the 'pundits' tips at the start of each season on the final ladder placings. For example, today's Age has their 8 experts largely tipping only 1 change to the final 8 from last season.

History tells us the avaregae churn of the final 8 each year is 2.7 ish from the previous season.

So theyr'e all wrong. A bit like economists at the Reserve Bank.

Happily, three of them have the Dees as finalists. So given their statistical errors in the forecasts, there's plenty of room for a Dees top 8 finish in reality.

    Or is there?

And hopefully when she hangs up the boots she gets a gig as an Assistant Coach for our men's team.

She is very smart tactically, game plans and how to neutralise opp strengths.

Not sure our current club leaders value her as much as the PJ regime did.

My focus was on her playing impact, but you raise a good point post career LH

Its emabarrassing how superior she is in analysis and insight when working on the Ch 7 commentary team to the ' bozo former champs '  of the game that station employs.

Max – sit the team down and look at the womens game against the crows last night. Best instructional video you will see demonstrating anger, intensity, application and attitude.

That’s what I expect to see from the blokes against Freo.

Iv'e always said that Daisy Pearce should be the first selected for the men's team for just these qualities. Iv'e seen here play live anfd the intensity and anger is the real thing with her. Great Leader

They are just working up to it. Anger management takes time.

True rjay. Except you have to actually be angry to have something to manage.

Max is trying but anger the exactly wrong quality you need. It leads to poor decisions etc....

Why can't they be committed desperate confident focussed supportive tireless ruthless ambitious hard working. Those are qualities I'm interested in.

this group is showing all the tell tale signs from previous seasons of inconsistency and inability to stop teams from effectively icing a game in one quarter

    Nailed it Sydee.

Everything else on this website  is just commentary and opinion, as it should be.

     This is the issue.

Didn't see the game.  But with Oliver, Brayshaw, Viney out and 9 new  players in  would the result have been different and were there ANY positives?

And just looking at the stats, the team went missing for the 3rd 1/4 and kept pace for the other 3.

So nothing has changed about the loss of concentrtaion and teams winning with 2o minutes of good footy as previous years.
is that what happened? I'd be interested to know because all the TALK so far has been "..we need to play 4  1/4's..." Maybe we can't?

Dogs had 5 players with 31 disposals more.  That wont be the case when we have Oliver, Salem, Viney and Brayshaw out there.

Result is meaningless, but disappointed our young guys who needed to lift did nothing (mainly Sparrow and Jordon).

    Thanks for the report.

Joe Daniher at 26 - wow Slobbo really has jumped the tracks.

Daniher - 4 games for 9.5 disposals a game and 3/4 of a goal per game.

Robinson is a disgrace to journalism and football in general. I'm embarrassed just commenting on his work.

And if there's 44 players better than Steven May , well.......... words fail me.

McAvaney was a great footy commentator and is probably the best sports broadcaster we've ever had

His footy commentary was exemplary with regards to his knowledge of the game and the 'gushing' I always just saw as an amusing aside. Never bothered me

Even better with the Olympics and horse racing and Bruce will continue in those areas but will go out on top re the footy.  Kudos

I disagree. Now I found Kayo and the fox team, esp. Huddo,  I didn't realise how verbose McAvaney was. He would just never shut up.

Over on Fox they actually discuss the game mid play. You don't need someone telling us that so and so kicked the ball, and then XX  XX handballed. We have eyes.

7 commentary style treats the audience like children. I might be on to something.

Deserves 6 games, more than any other current demon and will get them barring injury, as we have several injured players who have opened spots up for the first few games.

However, he looked really slow on Friday, like the end of last season and his turnovers were very costly. His reaction has obviously slowed with age and in lightning fast modern footy, it can be a game killer.

I look forward to him breaking the banner in his 300th, but think he will struggle if we have a pretty full list to add to that total.

He has been a champion of the club in difficult times and his loyalty will see him remembered as a great of the club. Well done NJ. Hopefully there is a bit more left in the tank.

This well thought out post by Redleg summarises what happens when the club (and sadly Nathan) squib the professional decision in 2020 and say "..lets go around 1 more time..."  What is so magical about 300 games?

This is now an ongoing topic for debate, and will impact younger players who will doubt they are in first 22 because 1 spot is allocated to Jones. I don't trust Goody to be smart about this, and I am hoping like hell Yze further expands his influence in selection.

Soemone has to take credit for Oliver' s changes in style shown against the Tiges and it may as well be Adem.  IMO.

    It can't have been Simon.

Barassi was a magnificent player BUT he wasn't in his early games. Played as a forward but flew for the ball too early and was dropped back to the twos at least twice. Melbourne tried an experiment here by playing him as a ruck rover( new concept). He was brilliant in this new role and promoted back to the firsts. History tells us the rest. True champion.

Great piece of history B McK.

Norm Smith knew Barassi could play but just not where and tried a few spots as you say. Smith 'invented' the ruck rover role specifically for RDB.

And later on this position suited him enabling him to expand his leadership across the field.

Coaching greatness is about those that change the game intuitively  - Norm Smith (and a nod to Len Smith at Richmond) , Clarkson (cluster), Kennedy (fitness and discipline, leaving Hudson alone in half a ground - resulting in the 50m square)), RDB (handball at all costs), Matthews (brutality), Hafey(long kicking). Northey ( no flags but excelled at belief and emotion)
