The players are now in groups of 6 doing some fartlek running and wrestling. All in all a pretty tough session of close to 2 hours. Drills were fairly tiring too as there was not much rest in the drills.
-
Rehab players running hard. Jurrah sprinting hard to stay with Viney/Strauss. In lines now. Forwards doing multiple leads and shots at goal. Tom McDonald and Sam Blease in that group. Mids doing clearance work, mostly young players in that group. Good news is Grimes doing the whole session.

James Strauss, Jack Viney, Liam Jurrah, Mark Jamar and Jordie McKenzie running laps with Strauss and Viney looking strong. Around 33 players out there today.

Bloody I phone spell check, somehow melbourne became mephitis!!!
-
It looks like the first day at primary school! All the players walk out wearing their uniform and a mephitis backpack with a drink holder

I will be there again and will give a report later. The life of a teacher!

Training - Wednesday 4th January, 2012
Yokozuna replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
I was at the session, for the eniter time, however my dogs were not as interested as I was, so I was a bit distracted! Not more to add than what others have said. In regards to some of the missing players, Grimes, Sylvia and McKenzie did the warm up laps and some skills work with other rehab players and then went in after half an hour. Jamar was out there in that group and then ran laps. Did not see Green, Moloney, Frawley, Garland, Bate, Davey, Dunn, Morton, Petterd or Rivers. I was happy with the session and most liked seeing the physical/pressure put into the drills, not just skill work. Also liked the way they did the running at the end of the session, as they would have already been slightly fatigued (despite the easier session). Also, Gysberts was in the second group, which was an improvement from what I have perviously heard on here. Another to impress in the running is Joel Mac, always in the top group and looks very comfortable. Unlike some others, I think he has a place in the team, especially if the team is more structured and he has a role to play ( just look at the battler captaining the pies and how much people rate him!!) I am also looking for huge things from Howe this year, think he can be one of the steals of the recent past. -
Depends on what you are trying to train for, but I would say most of the fitness gurus would say it would be not beneficial to train during the hottest periods of the day, on purpose at least. If it happens to be hot when training is scheduled then they would train, but probably a shorter and sharp session. If they know they are going to be playing in Darwin and/or Perth/ GC they may want to do some of it to be prepared for the conditions though.

During the season you will find us training at the same time as games, to acclimatise to the time we play, however, how often do we play at 2:10 anyway! Games are all at different times, and as said previously, there are several sessions a day of training. I dont think training at a specific time to adapt to the same time as game day is as relevant as it used to be due to the fact games are all over the place. If we played every game at 2:10 then it would be a good training principle to follow, but as we dont, it may not be as important to the schedule.

Players available in the Pre Season and Rookie Drafts

There were plenty of good players in the team, I grant that, but he was not anything special. I was just saying I think the name helped him, thats all. -

Brett O'Hanlon. Also I was surprised to see Tom Curran get picked up. Might be another time where the surname gets you a chance before other players. reminds me of Nick Jewell, son of former tigers coach Tony, who I played with. He got picked up, despite an average time at the Under 18's and played 1 game for the Tigers and never did much, much better cricketer! -

It seems that everyone wants to go over the same points again, like the thread that went forever on Scully already. Every team would have picked Scully #1, to say they would not have done so is pure fantasy. You can interview him all you like, but I dont think anyone thought this offer or this situation would come along. We can all hypothesise and say how we felt then and now, but it is pretty simple. We chose him. He did not do much for us other than give a bit of excitement at the start of his first year. He has gone for a lot of money. We got compensated. His father is dodgy. The AFL is dodgy. We will live on. -
Thanks to Rollo for organising today. Really puts into perspective why I retired from footy 2 years ago! Tried to stay away from getting hurt, but the shoulder is pretty stiff and sore after the second game! Also, nothing better than beating the dons and the pies in any form of football! Looking forward to next time.

Just because someone played in a premiership team, it does not make them a great player, let alone a very good player. I would be very disappointed if we picked him up. He has no outstanding areas in his game, not a great mark, great kick or super hard, just a solid player. We have plenty similar to him who I think have more upside, and he has been injuerd for a while, do we need more injured players?
-
Dunns name comes up because he is not very good. He has played a few good games, but he has been around for a long time. He can kick long goals, but that is about it. He gets up other teams noses because he is annoying, not for any other reason. If he was not contracted I would delist himquite easily. There are many ahead of him. Clarke, Watts, Jurrah, Howe, Petterd, McDonald to name a few.

I too find it hard to know what they mean "we stand for nothing". We are a football club with a proud history and we play football. That is what we stand for. The fact we got smashed by the cats and have been down for a while does not mean we stand for nothing or stand for anything less, it means we are just not that good at playing football atm.

Steph had a very good year this year but he is a very different player to Clarke. Clarke is more physical and strong marking whilst Steph is more of an athlete who is slowly learning the game. I would not say no to Clarke, as we can do with a large body in the forward line and the fact he can move into the ruck is an advantage. If you dont rate Clarke, I think you may need to go and watch some replays of him as a player. I would trade him for our first pick if we could upgrade our second pick in the process somehow.

We can also use our PP in the next 4 years or offer them in trades in the next few years, which could help us land someone big next year or move up in the draft through trades. We do not have to trade them or use them straight away, we can be patient, which is not always a given for people on this site!

It is true, they may not take Crouch, and we could try and get pick 3 in the MD, but what is to say that we get the 3rd pick, Adelaide take Crouch and we dont get who we want. Then we have to choose someone else as the deal has been done. I much prefer we either get pick 2 or nothing, and not pay too much. And to all the panic merchants who say we have not done anything for years etc. etc. To be honest, hardly anything happens in trade week. Most teams have done nothing other than move draft picks over the past years.

You cant play anmore than 22 players a week, so there are always going to be players missing out on a game. The extra players on the list often give you the opportunity to develop players, or at least give someone a chance. If I had the choice of trying a new player on our list for a couple of year, who has the size of Lisle, against Bate or Dunn, there is no doubt I would trade him in for a late pick or another fringe player. That being said, I am not fussed either way, I would much rather us get one of the 17 y.o players.
-
Just reread your post Billy and you said they wont trade any 17 year olds this year to keep O'Meara. I guess that could happen but having listened to them it sounds as though they want to trade 2 this year and 2 next year to try and get more from the competing clubs.
-
If they choose to take the picks/trades/players - whatever the choice is, then the team offering those picks gets to choose from the list of the 17 year olds who put their hands up to be drafted. O'Meara is the 1st choice of all clubs, so there is no way GWS would get him Billy.

Lutz, if you have the tapes of the first 8 games, go and watch them to see what type of a tough player he is. He goes very hard at the man, and not Brown style, where he attacks the players when they are not looking, but he hits when in the contest. He also dives hard into packs, protects teammates and is a tough player, along the lines of J. Selwood, not a thug.
-
Tapscott will not be traded, it is as simple as that. I like that you are offering up someone good to get someone good Lutz, but I dont think Tapscott will be the one. He was drafted as a forward who can take a mark and was played in defense to assist with him running in straight lines once he had his hip injury. There is a massive upside for Tapscott. He only had 1 pre season in reality and was playing very well early in the year, which some people may have forgotten, prior to his hamstring. When he returned he did not play as well, which is not unexcpected. You need to think of what Adelaide would want in return, what type of player they need. I am not sure of what players they are needing though.

Dee Luded, as I said before, I am happy to trade 1 of our experienced players, but not all of them. If we did lose Jamar, who I would probably prefer to keep, we better get something bloddy good in place of him. I rate Gawn and Martin and I think Spencer has a lot to offer too, so he can be replaced, but as I said in my previous post, we still need some exprienced players to help out the younger ones.
