  1. I am not sure why all the angst, Kiss will pull 90,000+ at the 'G' umm hang on isnt there something else on that day?
  2. I wouldn't write off 'chip' after only his first game with a new team. He is better than what he showed the other night. As long as Hoges towels him up when we play the dawks, I'll have a grin as wide as the MCG. The Tiges if they already dreaded playing the dawks, will hate it even more with Frawley on Jack Riewoldt, he always had the better of that sook.

COACH - Phonse Kyne The Melbourne juggernaut rolled on in 1960, the Demons again finishing on top of the ladder, this time ahead of Fitzroy (coached by Len Smith, brother of Demon coach Norm), Essendon and Collingwood. Melbourne again was the flag favorite, but there was no doubt Fitzroy was the sentimental favorite as it had not been in a grand final since winning in 1944. However, the Demons obviously did not believe in sentiment and thrashed the Lions by 62 points in the second semi-final. Then, in the preliminary final, Collingwood pipped Fitzroy by five points. It was to be yet another Melbourne-Collingwood grand final. This time, however, the Magpies were given only an outside chance of upsetting the power team of the competition, especially as Collingwood had to contend with very heavy conditions in the preliminary final. Melbourne, on the other hand, was fresh from a week's rest. Conditions for the grand final were atrocious. Rain had pelted down for 48 hours and, ironically, this raised Magpie spirits as the bog at the MCG undoubtedly was a leveler. However, Melbourne dominated from the start, diving on the ball at every opportunity to create packs and generally playing perfect wet-weather football. Melbourne kicked four goals to nil in the opening quarter and even the most optimistic Collingwood fan could not envisage a fightback. In fact, Collingwood kicked just two goals - the first from a Ray Gabelich toe-kick from just five metres early in the second quarter and the second from a John Henderson set-shot from 40 metres in the third quarter. Melbourne cruised home by 48 points. It was the Demons' fifth flag in six years, and its seventh straight grand final - a phenomenal effort underlining that this indeed was the club's golden era.
  4. All the Codes have to sent via PM to everyone that confirmed and requested to be added to a league. A couple yet to join their league. In the next week or 2 I will open up the league(s) for anyone that isnt on D'Land to fill the vacant postions. Just a reminder, if you wish to do so, the Melbourne Demons Group league is a free for all to join, see previous post, for details on joining the "Group" Thanks for everyone for making my job a lot easlier, by joining their league quickly after receiving their league Code. Good luck to everyone in their league.
  5. Range Rover must be a shoe-in. The polls havent been the same. A legend in his own lunchbox.
  6. I'm not sure what everyone else thinks, but I would think 4 years on the list (barring no serious injury) should be enough time to show something decent, something postive they can play AFL at a decent level. Taller guys take a bit longer generally. Tyson comes in after not much AFL experience , bugger all knowledge of our game plan(s) new coach ,team mates and turns out to be one of our best players in 2014. If he can do it, there is no excuse, bar, not up to it, for the borderline players. We waited yrs for Col to get that one good season under his belt, Newton was on the list longer than most, to name a couple. Now we need to be a bit more brutal. More recently Tappy, we all hoped he would get over his injury woes. I would also hope the days of the big culls are over, we pick and chose who doesnt look like being able to go to another level, then shop around for an upgrade. The players I named have been around for awhile, so far have been good to average. Jetta on the other hand, proved with hard work its possible to turn it around.
  7. Good post mate. I agree with your points you make. I hope all players go to another level this year. Grimes included. Without the captaincy burden perhaps he feels the pressure off a bit, and his disposal improves, if not, it will be a team killer. All the players will be well aware, someone has to go at the end of the year. It would not surprise if some have a really good year, only to be on the trade list. There is a lot riding on performances this year. As it is getting harder to find players to drop from the list. I would hate to make the call of who stays and who has to go. Lets say Trenner's foot doesnt come up, he gives it away (although it's not in his nature to do that), Cross may decide to stand aside to allow a draftee to come in (if our mids start to perform), then Garland may decide to try his luck elsewhere. Just throwing that thought process out there.
  8. Gee tough crowd here. Kingy only got here last year. Pencil being one of the crowd favourites to improve or out, and Fitzpatrick needing to show he is up to it. I thought King would be a player to give more time. He is well balanced and kicks well, his downfall at the moment is injured every 2nd day. He also needs to bulk up, but I would give him more time.
  9. Well done, exactly the basis of this thread. It's not about who WILL, but who MIGHT have to go, and who has fallen behind or hasnt yet lived up to expectations and has been on the list for awhile.
  10. I'll see your couple of points and raise you a couple of points. Don't try and put your own spin on it. Where did I mention Fitzpatrick and him kicking goals? Re-read my post (take off those rose coloured glasses) "Butter fingers" is a local term around these parts, for a player dropping his marks. Fitzpatrick needs to improve in this area. In case you havent noticed at training. That had nothing what-so-ever to do with his amount of goals kicked. If he continues to drop sitters, one day it might be costly. 2: criticise a player ? ... I stated Terlich would be getting nervous about getting a gig on the backline. 3: Never assume sunshine. I was referring to Grimes bringing the ball (football), from the backline then spraying his kicks during a game. (Jones has enough brownie points. *meaning, he can be forgiven* for the odd stuff up.) I really don't think this thread is for you my friend. If you don't, or prefer not to discuss players under the pump to retain his spot on the list, then rack off. ** NEWS BREAK ** At the end of this season, some players will be moved on. Reality, I have named a few that need to step it up. *Apart from Trenners*
  11. Port Demons and wayne check your PM for a league code. I also need the name of your SC Team thx in advance.
  12. As a passionate and long time member / supporter of this once great footy club, I expect more than the tripe that has been dished up over the last decade. I hate the way footy has changed over the years, made worse by our pitiful performances. I have come to except the changes, although I don't agree with most of them, but I can't except second rate teams with sub standard levels of football nous. That has been us to a tee, sadly. Thank god for PJ mostly , and P.Roos for giving a chance to get back where we should be, that is to play in the finals in the near future. What PJ has done has been remarkable. Having read the training reports and the positivity has me wishing this season can't come quick enough. There is a lot to like so far.Hogan is just one for starters. I'm looking forward to a big improvement this year, 8 wins? The downisde is, and taking into account not a shot has been fired yet, I am seeing, hearing, the same culprits STILL with issues in regards to skill levels. There is nothing more frustrating watching us win the footy, only to see it handed over, then watch the ball came back in quicker than it left, then they score. Someone listed a stat on our turnovers that the oppostions scored from, breaks my heart and kills the team spirit. To keep improving we need to keep turing the list over. So during the year I have penciled in some players if they cant improve, will be on my short list to go. At the end of the year we are required to make list changes. 1: Trenners: (love the guy to bits) injury cloud on his playing future, nearly traded to my horror. Fully fit will be an assett. (Wont know where he is at with his football until next year?) 2: Grimes: no doubting his courage etc, but geez, if he keeps missing targets coming out of the backline, at 25 we really need to ask the question if he is up too AFL std and is he helping our cause. 3: Spencer: Big angry young talls are hard to find, but needs to do a LOT more. 4: Fitzpatrick: Good pace etc, but has butter fingers, that could cost us a game. Would love for him to cement a spot. 5: Terlick: must be very nervous, so many pushing for the 1/2 backline. 6: McKenzie: Limited to what he can bring to a game. Great tagger, but gives nothing else. If anyone gives him the ball in our forward fifty ever again, I'll throw up. So there is my 5 I will have my eye on this year. Someone has to make room for our draft picks. The rest on the list seem safe atm but its a long way to go. I'm pretty confident the other players will go ok this year, Time will tell
  13. Check your PM for your league code.
  14. Yes, we were well and truely sucked in. Harrison and Weideman and a couple of others, decided the only way to beat us, was not playing football, but play the man. A few of our players were getting the rough end of the pineapple. After 1/2 time, we decided to even up the ledger. (bad move) I am suprised Smith didnt make them aware of doing that. (perhaps he did). I read somewhere on any given day in '58 Melbourne would beat the 'filth' 9 times out of 10.
  15. At some stage when I was compling the data for the Grand finals, my cut and pasting screwed up. The '57 Melb team list and best players for Ess were wrongly listed. I have since corrected those errors. While I am here, I would like to thank wherever I sourced the data, a thank you. *pop*
  16. That data has had the wrong team listed for a number of years. I have amended that, so you are confirmed as a 1/2 forward flanker. Well done.
  17. No 10 of 12 : After a "minor' glitch in '58, the Demon juggernaut was back to its all conquering best. 1959 Grand Final Results Saturday, 26th September ,M.C.G MELBOURNE 1.4 8.5 11.10 17.13 (115) ESSENDON 3.5 7.8 10.10 11.12 (78) Umpire: Barbour Attendance 103,506 MELBOURNE B: J. RES: Mackie, Leydin Goals: Sewell 4, Clarke 2, Evans 2, Shaw 2, Fraser. Best: Shearman, Birt, Epis, Sewell, Shaw, Clarke. COACH - Dick Reynolds For the fifth consecutive season, Melbourne finished on top of the ladder, this time half a game ahead of Carlton, with Collingwood third and Essendon fourth.Melbourne, naturally, was the hot flag favorite, especially after its 44-point thumping of Carlton in the second semi-final. Essendon, which had made the finals just half a game ahead of Fitzroy, defeated Collingwood by 38 points in the first semi-final and then surprised the football world in defeating Carlton by seven points in the preliminary final. Melbourne therefore was almost unbackable for the flag as the Dons were considered a little better than average side, whereas Melbourne had star players on every line. The Bombers reveled in their underdog status and took the game right up to Melbourne in the first quarter, deliberately using their pace in an effort to burn off the opposition. The tactics worked, except that poor shooting for goal left Essendon with just a 13-point buffer after so much exertion. Melbourne coach Norm Smith, realising he had to something about Essendon's pace, instructed his players to hit hard and often. And the Demons had the perfect man to set the example in Ron Barassi, who ran tagger Hugh Mitchell off his feet in causing mayhem. Melbourne led by three points at half time and the pendulum had swung its way. Essendon kept troubling Melbourne over the third quarter, but a late lapse in concentration allowed Demon forward Bob Johnson to kick two time-on goals. Melbourne led by just six points at the final change, but its ferocious tackling took its toll on Essendon over the final quarter. The Demons cruised home by 37 points to win their fourth flag in five years.
  18. They don;t make them like that any more. I had an EH that I spent over 10 grand on. (lot fo $$ back then) It came with 2 bibles, just in case the 1st one failed. One of. if not the quickest 6 cyl in melb. But is another story for another day.
  19. Don't give up mate. OD nearly made it to our 1st one, if not for the fact he had to work, so the story goes.
  20. Might not to working by the time it made the trip from Perth to Melb.
  21. Not much has changed from then to now. They slipped in some 'filth' players to beat us. Good 'ol cut and paste has got me again. Good pickup daisy, I'll have to see what happened there.
  22. Yep That is Ken Emselle's father.
  23. If you want to buy the 1957 GF number plates, Bobby Mac has them for sale I believe. 20 bucks for the set, in good nick. Problem is, they are sold with the car. the car is worth 30 grand.
  24. I checked that was the going rate listed in a paper. Probably high octane, avaition fuel lol

Res.: Moloney, Heenan Goals: Gallagher 3, Birt, Gill, Hebbard, Clarke. Best: Clarke, Shearman, Mitchell, Leek, Towner, Birt. COACH - R. (dicky) Reynolds Melbourne was not so dominant in the 1957 home and away season, being defeated five times and drawing another match. However, it was still good enough for the Demons to top the ladder, ahead of (in order) Essendon, Hawthorn (making the finals for the first time) and Carlton. Melbourne, naturally, was the flag favorite, but all the other finalists had claims to the premiership. Melbourne's remarkable run of finals victories ended when Essendon defeated the Demons by 16 points. It was suggested - and probably with good reason - that the Demons went into the match over-confident, paying a hefty penalty. If there was complacency in the Melbourne camp it certainly was not evident the following week when the Demons thrashed Hawthorn by 68 points to challenge Essendon for the flag. If Melbourne had been cocky in the semi-final, it was super-determined in the grand final. In fact, Melbourne scored the opening goal - through Ron Barassi - in the opening seconds. It was a message to the Bombers that Melbourne meant business and would defend its premier status to the very last breath. Melbourne's frenzy continued throughout the first half and, with a 35-point break, the job had been done. Melbourne coach Norm Smith had instructed his forwards to stay wide and to break up the game with short, sharp handball. The Demons followed their coach's instructions to the letter, even though restricted by injuries. Melbourne had gone into the match with several injury problems and Keith Carroll (thigh) was replaced by Ian Thorogood in the second quarter. The Demons shrugged these problems aside to defeat Essendon by 61 points to land a third consecutive flag for the second time in the club's history. Edit: Revised Melb Team
