  1. I am no different to you or anyone else. I WANT every player we draft, trade in,rookie to be a gun player. I have had enough of the club being kicked around. I was excited we drafted 2 gun players. But reality hit home, I have been here before. I now loathe reading about how player X is going to be a gun. We don't know that yet. our past history shows we (for whatever reasons) fail to make the most of the best available we get to the club. Its pretty sad when the off season is the best time of the year. I much prefer Sept/Oct to be the best part of the year. Then whoever we recruit, they can take a backseat until they prove their worth in the team. As has been the case in the past, thrown in the deep end, and suddenly player X is nothing like the hype he got prior. Both Brayshaw and Petracca can spend all year at Casey for all I care. As long as they begin to grow in confidence and turn out to be the player we all hope for. Having said that, I wont mind at all if they kill it in the 1sts. But as I keep saying, show me 1st, what they can do before I am willing to label them a gun. They are little fish now in a big pond. Previous reports on how good they were at TAC are out the window. Are they dedicated to the cause, are they made up the right stuff to step up. They are coming into a weak side. Pretty tough gig,
  2. Now you get it! In fairness to the posts that I have read,in the training reports and numberous other threads on Dland, I don't recall anyone saying they expect our new draft picks to perform like a Dangerfield. I think you just wanted to make a point by using an extreme. But I still see a trend that most do expect them to be 'gun' players. And this is the point of the whole thread. Be careful what you expect, because it may not end up as what was expected. As Mad Melbourne and Nutbean etc have posted, for many reasons a hyped up recruit fails to live up to the hype. Then the blame game starts. its the club, its the coaches. Well this time I;ve put a line in the sand. Let them show me what they can do in a AFL game and do it constistently well. Then I will say whatever writeups/hype that bestowed them was correct and warranted. Until then expect little, and hope for the best.
  3. Ok we disagree, that's fine. I have no problem with that. Lets go back to $cully ,Morton and all the others that didnt live up to the hype. I was lead to believe we had the best players in the draft, or at least we have chosen the best available (or for our needs) Only to watch all unfold and then left looking stupid. So its with some reservations I am not going to get caught up with the writeups until I hear and see them produce in a AFL game.
  4. The point is, discount anything that has been written about them. Although it all sounds promising and more likely than not they might be very good players. We wipe their slate clean on all the hype until we see some proof that they have what it takes to be an AFL player. How good? remains to be seen. whence the example in the opening post, all sounds rosy, but we never got to see the player that was described in his pre draft report. We got a snapshot here and there. Until I see some proof that they have what it takes to play AFL at a high level. I'm on the fence.
  5. 'Burgs is employed. ...... Just sayin'
  6. Perhaps you amd I can discuss the chances of the new recruits. One poster doesnt have a clue, and has admitted that. Getting stuck into Sylvia has been done to death. I am totally discounting everything that has been written about Petracca,Brayshaw and the rest (proir to the draft) until I see some proof that they can take the they next step. Over to you.
  7. Congrats Nutbean, you managed to pickup where this was intended to go. Let's take it a bit further. Firstly the above could have been written about any promising young player, using Sylvia just highlights how pear shaped it all could go. We cant blame Col, he didn't do the write up. Perhaps he read what was said about him, not just this write up just any that described his talents and it went to his head. If it was his own personal CV, then he could expect to be torn to shreds. The point of the post is, we continually get seduced with high draft picks and the writeups. As you pointed out, they may be standouts in a TAC comp. We read the writeups and without them playing a senior game, we expect them to walk right in and be champions ,when they don't they then get labelled as a dud or wont make an AFL player. Its no different this year with 'the tractor" and Brayshaw. Some have them in their best 22, and they have yet to get through a pre season. They may look great in a NAB Cup game, but if they start to cause havoc on the scoreboard in a game for the 4 pts, indirectly or directly you can bet the opposition will send one of their more seasoned bigger body player to do a shutdown role. They are no longer up against kids their own age. Roos setting a tough training session, (when the new kids were due to have their 1st run), was planned. I'm betting he was making a point, one to knock out any cockiness in them and bring them back to earth, also make it know just how hard they need to train. Some of the best players have come to the club way down the draft, without all the fan fair, ie Junior Mac. is one. So believe all the hype at your own peril if they dont succeed, don't put the blame back on the player if you are disappointed. Let the kids enjoy being drafted, then judge them after 50 games, 100 games. History will determine if they were champions. Not some clips of the best passages of play or some glossy writeup. In the meantime, they look promising, but no guarentee they be 200 game players. If I had of inserted some kids name using Cols' wrtite, most would be drooling at the prospect. And we all know how it turned out with the above example.
  8. AKA - Just needs one good Pre Season under his belt. Refer to Freo for updates. It isnt meant to be another Col Sylvia bashing thread. The above post I deleted references to Colin Sylvia, it wasnt meant to trick anyone. Now refer to Curry & Beer, and Nutbean nailed where I was going with this.
  9. Been keeping tabs on this bloke for awhile. Any interest? anyone? Details: Hgt: 183cm Wgt: 82kg Position: Onballer/Forward Natural foot: Right Honours: Victoria Country All Australian TAC Coaches Award Centre in TAC Team of the Year National Draft Camp Invitee TAC Stats: Previous year : 17 games, 28 goals, 21.9 PPG. Current year : 18 games, 21 goals, 25.4 PPG. Player Profile: Now here is one exciting prospect and will be a star at AFL level. The youngster was solid last year, but was outstanding in Victoria Country. He is basically a barrel-chested midfielder who can do everything, but just as impressive is he ability to go forward, be the go-to man and dominate. He could play anywhere from centre to a flank to forward pocket at AFL level no worries at all. It was well known that he carried osteitis pubis for a lot of the year, and this meant he spent perhaps more time up forward than he would have liked. Despite this, he still had the ability to win games on his own. He is one of those players who will see a game isn't going the way he likes and will just take it by the scruff of the neck and drag his way.His kicking is excellent. Can kick a long way, and is very accurate with the weighting of his passes. Not afraid to use his left, which is adequate. Tends to prefer to dispose by foot than hand, and if I did have a query it is his handballing, can miss targets. His marking ability for his size is simply incredible. He had the highest vertical leap of ANY player at draft camp. The guy is capable of winning the car one year, that's how good a grab he is. Is also unbelievably strong in the hips - he loves to work one-on-one with someone in a marking contest, keeps his feet really well.Does all the team things and is hard at the footy - 111 tackles including 13 in a game give you some idea of his work ethic. He is super competitive and even when he is struggling with injury still gives his all. Is usually poised and calm in traffic as well. The list of achievements as long as your arm gives you some idea how good he was this year.I saw him play a full game in the midfield early in the year and he was awesome. I think once he gets over his OP he will be a superb player. Definite top selection for mine.
  10. I agree with you on that, adding there is a difference playing tough footy, and being a wannbe tough guy. Dunne would not set a good example on field. He still needs to keep improving onfield, had a good year this year, but not enough for me to be swayed. I'd be going Jones for Capt. Dawes for VC. Dawes needs to lift his input on game day. I think he might in 2015, unless he cops an injury pre-season, he should be able to give us more game day, plus helping out Hogan. His experience isn't to be unrated, he speaks well. For those 2 reasons I would give him the VC. Not ideal, but our options right now are a bit limited. LG = Jones, Dawes, Cross, Grimes, Vince, Viney. I'd be wary of throwing the younger guys in for next year, let them play footy, when they show onfield leadeship consistently, bring one or two in ie When Cross retires. Vince may benefit from some added responsibity. He'll have to look the other LG guys in the eye,if he puts a foot out of line.
  11. A lot of water and I mean a LOT of water has flowed under the bridge at jolimont since '64. Every month, day, year doesn't go past when I think today is the day when I start to believe we are on our way. Every time I walk away disappointed. What did happen to those once Mighty "Dees'? Well for starters they retired, some have already fallen off the perch. Then I realise the pride of the jumper has been dragged through the dirt for way too long. The saviours have come and gone. My childhood heroes are now but a mere distant memory. Going to the "G' packed with a sea of red and blue, listening to the roar of our loyal passionate crowd, the hairs of the back of my neck would stand up, when the roar rocked the "G". The cheer squad in full voice, rivalling any opposition's cheer squad. It was something to be proud of, even if we didnt win, I could leave knowing the boys had given it their all, the supporters had yelled themselves hoarse urging the team. We are a proud club, we hate to lose, for so many years, losing wasn't part of our culture. We took a loss on the chin, and bid the opposition a friendly goodbye, but deep down the hurt of losing was eating away inside. (laugh now you bastards), wait until next we meet. We were gracious when we mauled another team, yeah we could rub it in with the best of them, but the norm was to be humble and say 'better luck next time". When really we meant, wait unti the next time, we will slaughter you worse that what you got today. Some of us grew up being used to winning, and being successful. That's why we were the "Mighty Demons". Proud, successful and ruthless. The bolts on the wheels needed to be replaced, by the time anyone stopped to check, a wheel fell off, then another, before we knew what or where we were, the bandwagon was in disarray. We had been far too content for far too long, just coasting along basking in the glory. Then it was left for far too few, to do way too much. Our younger supporters were, and are from strong passionate Demon families, they hear all the stories of days long gone. Some blackmailed, some followed in vain hope seeing and hearing the passion in the voice of their old man, and were sold up the river. Next year son, next year, wait and see, we will do better next year. The old man in some cases may no longer be with us, the sons and daughters now have their own familes. The tradition continues, they pass on the stories of our past heroes. Next year will be better, just wait, you'll see. Now some of the new generation know nothing but being laughed at school, and or at work. For some it was just too much, they jumped ship, or denied they even liked football. Some start to question were all those stories that had been passed on, just a myth? were they making it all up? Did we realy have the MCG to ourselves? They say its our home ground, but why do other teams play as many games as we do? Was it once filled in red and blue? Did we really have more at a game and most other teams? Still some refuse to sway, their parent's parents were passionate Dee supporters Every year their hopes are up with every highly prized recruit. Every time, their hopes take another 'hit' as the new found star fails to make any impression. You know its hit rock bottom, when your loyal pet dog, chews up his Demon scarf, then growls, threathening to chew of your arm if you get within a cooeee of it.Surely the dog hasnt turned?, what about throwing the stick in the park? Feed on time, every night, without fail.Ok, maybe seeing me about to kick in the TV, or paying out on nextdoors cat is having a profound impression of my once docile rockweiler (rockie)."It's ok boy. its me, the Dees are on the improve. Once again, greeted with a snarl. Here we are once again, another new draft. Some more talent added to the list, some delisted to make room for the future champs of the club. The dog seems a little more upbeat, as we throw the ball. me kicking the ball, still trying to be Robbie Flower,to a leading Hoges, and nail a pinpoint pass to 'rockie' but instead of the ball sailing through the goals for his 7th goal. I only see it disappear into the distance, dog slobber all over it. Then call him back, and we head off home. I reassure him, the Mighty Dees will be mighty once again. He gives me a lick and we walk off, can't wait for the new season to begin. His new xmas present is a new MFC scarf. We love this time of the year. Full of hope, and promises to be our best for a long time. The prized photo of the old man with the great Norm Smith hangs proudly. I stop and stare, then refelct back. I think to myself we WILL be the "Mighty Dees" once again. I have witnessed success at the top, now its time for all those that haven't to be able to share that feeling. Your kids going to school, prouding wearing a red and blue jumper, not a peep from anyone, for they know the Dees are the Mighty Demons.
  12. You got to learn to share that 'bluey' Good luck in 2015. that was a great effort this year. btw, thx to everyone that has posted their appreciation thus far.
  13. NP, have you marked down as a starter for 2015. What is your SC team name?
  14. I will keep updating the confirmations as they come in. On the subject of AFL Fanatsy, I will setup a league for anyone that will be playing both. I want to keep tabs on Fantasy's improvement to their site.
  15. Welcome barra17, I'll throw in a league somewhere, there is always room. Post your team name when you can. Good luck.
  16. Start treating supporters with contempt and not listening to their complaints, one day they will wake up. It will be all too late. The AFL is heading down the same path. http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia-v-south-africa-2014-15/content/story/802517.html
  17. Bring back the umbrella!!! Nothing better than having to sit through us being beaten by the filth, and 1/2 through the last qtr, heavy rain starts falling ending any chance of a win. Up goes the brolly, 10 filth supporters behind can no longer see anything.
  18. I really don't like the sound of all this. 100 or whatever so call experts representing the every day supporter? Who are they really kidding. More likely markerting gurus trying to milk our great game for every dollar they can make out of it.All the AFL can see are the $$ signs. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-11-18/umpires-in-new-york If they want a fair dinkum opinion why not have every club send out a survey to ALL their members then each club posts the results on their comments The AFL gathers all the results from all the clubs its all there for everyone to see. You cant cannot manufacture atmosphere, they can try but if ts all fake, they are treating the every day supporters as idiots. They structure the fixture to suit themselves. Its not a fair fixture, its based on making money. screw the lesser clubs. Take this as an example as I doubt I will never witness anything that would ever come close this this again. It wasnt man made. The turn of events that happened on this day nobody could have structured, its happened naturally. 1987 Western Oval Footscray V Melbourne. Round 22. 31,000 crammed in. The 'buzz' around the ground was one out of the box. Both teams have to win to play finals. But Geelong have to lose at home to Hawthorn. Melbourne wants to win for Flower. The events of that day are well documented. No pre game USA hype was needed, some lunatic was on the ground loudspeaker off and on for the 1st half, until someone gagged him. The interest that weekend was unparalled. It was the expectation of not knowing what would happen. Everyone there, will know what it felt like. God only knows how many more missed out getting inside the ground. Today the AFL would probably moved heaven and earth to play the game at a larger venue. Why, to satisfy the supporters that missed out? more likely more patrons paying more money to get in. We were all packed in like sardines, would I have prefered it being played at the "G" ?? After all what happened, the build up, people shoulder to shoulder asking the progress down at the Cattery. Not on your life, it all made up the excitement of the day. The tension mounted, nobody needed fake hype. It became a fenzy during the last qtr. Then the roar when the Hawks hit the front. For second or two, players stopped, the world stood still for a split second, the Dees would be playing finals, they did it for Robbie. The AFL will take away all this from ever happening again. The game was born here, it evolved into OUR game. Now its about to be another Amercian sporting event. RIP the bump, and the game we loved.
  19. I am all for improving technology for our games. I also realise this comes at a cost. I get all that. We don't want flashing lights and any other crap to gee up the crowds, the game itself makes the game day atmosphere. Use the technology to improve camera angles, and scoreboard info, but leave the hype to the supporters watching 2 teams battle it out. What I despise are changes to the fundermentals of the game itself. Rules changes that arent defined, and only confuses more people, umpires and commentators, ie take the dragging the ball in and not releasing it. Now we have players jumping on top of the player that has tried to win possession of the ball. Two things here. 1: penalised the player trying to make the ball his object. 2: other players jumping into everyones back so the player with the ball cant move his hands or arms then gets pinged Prior opportunity is out the window, before the player had a chance to do anything with it. Then what happened to in the back as everyone piles on top? Now if they started to pay in the back when players jump in on top, that will eventually stop players piling in. Then the ump can clearly see a player not making any effort to release the ball.Or if its a one on one, the tackler has regarded the player with the ball, its a free to the tackler for a perfect tackle. The rules are in place and have been since day dot. Some need refining so the gray areas are limited. Umps will make mistakes, and some will see things differently, and pay a free mostly will disagree with. Mostly the ones disagreeing will be supporting the player who's team they support got pinged. Fact of life, As the game evolves, game plans change, we dont need rule changes, as then it becomes the dog chasing its tail. You stick fat with the rules in place. But this isnt the case, the AFL / rules commiitee seem to be hell bent on changes, this just confuses everyone. As for this Fan Summit sounds to me like they have 100 or so called experts speaking on behalf on supporters, I could be wrong. Most likely if this is the case, using a past survey to use for their own agenda. Some surveys can be twisted around to have the end result to suit an agenda. ie : If public transport was improved would you use it? Y/N y So the most popular ans would be most prefer public transport if it was improved. Another Question could be if public parking was cheaper would you use Public transport? Now if we want the true answer to public opinion, the question should be a} If public parking was cheaper and more parking available at football games. b) public transport was cheaper for game days what is your preference? A or B? So my point is, when I read / hear that most supporters love the changes we (AFL) have made to make the game day experience better. When in reality most people I speak too, hate the new concepts, I'm talking about the music being played during the game, Some jerk trying to gee up the crowd etc etc . AFL have reported crowds have dropped away recently, well hello?? IF you had given us our PP pick we would be more competive that gets us more supporters to our games, as we might be in with a better chance to win. Play Vic based clubs more often at the "G' instead of playing the Suns etc that most couldnt give 2 hoots for. Instant improvement on crowd numbers, as us Dee supporters come out of the woodwork. They say they are looking into food prices etc, not before time. We have been ripped off for long enough. How about a discount when using public transport for game days. Show your memberships and get 10% off. Inventives for going to games, not the crap hype to enhance being there. Tackle the real isuues. If the AFL keep listening to ways to increase hype like USA sports, they will lose more support.
  20. Here we go again, ringing the changes once more to our once great game. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-11-20/coin-toss-may-be-thrown Firstly I want to know who got invited to this Fan Summit, anyone from here? know anyone that attended such event??? Eithad is a soulless venue, they can add as many party lights around the ground as they like. Its a dump. Waverley Park as under developed as it was, was a better venue, thats factoring the permanent thunderstorm cloud they hovered over it everytime a footy game was to be played. Back to this summit.... held in Victoria? somewhere in Aust, or perhaps in the USA to get an opinion. They say tradition toss of the coin... well it wont be if they change it. FMD, 2 captains one tosses a coin, then point to which end they will kick too. Expect explosions, flashing scoreboards that will make the 4th of July pale into obvilion. Then 5 million amps of music to be belted out of loudspeakers while we try to discuss between ourselves the positional changes taking place. False hype to get a better game experience!!?? The game itself is the hype, its having to listen to some jerk ten rows back going off his nut at the umpires. We dont need to be brought to a fenzy with all this crap. Oh well, good luck AFL you are killing our game. Soccer hasnt changed in a billion years, yet it prospers and chugs along very nicely. They are thinking of bringing back curtain raisers before the main event, what a novel idea, I wonder what genius came up with that idea? oh wait a minute........ Why not get the tribunal and some sort of consistently with fines and penalities, oh yeah they stuffed they as well. Good to hear and see we are in safe hands moving our game into the future.
  21. I dont have you in any SC league, but will add you in. Still playing DT next year as well?. if so you will need to confirn in that thread also. Thx
  22. I was waiting for this to be debated. I am going to strongly recommend we move the comp to VT Dream Team. In fact I may just set up the comp on VT regardless. Its stable and was like the old dream team we are all used to playing. I very much doubt AFL Fanatsy will have all their problems solved for the 2015 season, I am sure they will fix some of the issues, and probably unravel more issues. For 2016, we can re-visit what web site we use. I dont think we need to go through all the problems they experienced, but it well below what we would have expected.
