Mark Basics [edit: resurrected from 2013]
jnrmac replied to Straight Sets Simon's topic in Melbourne Demons
Who is this Mark Basics and should we recruit him? -
Seriously why would anyone waste oxygen or brainpower on that goose? It was the right deal for us and in any case it was the deal we did.
-
They had to move away from the rebuidling rhetoric AND Roos only had one year left...theyneeded to sell some hope and blue sky
-
Thats because yesterday they were all expecting players to kick sideways!! Hunt decided to change that idea and he Watts and NJones really imposed themselves in the past quarter.
-
You may well be right. Sue's point about he players looking across the ground and seeing flashing coloured signage is a good one and I am surprised its not talked about more. When you sit next to the fence it is actually difficult to make out players and distances with the lights flashing in your eyes.
-
I hear we are recruiting a guy called melksham for next year,,,,
-
Not talking about any of that. Just saying that Strauss was recruited as an elite kick and we never saw it. Nothing to do with development,. Salem's kicking is not about development. He actually is an elite kick and had that when he came to the club. Strauss was nowhere near that,.
-
Didn't we try that with James Strauss?
-
I heard them say on the radio that GC had 7 fwds in the last quarter.....they nearly pinched the game, Don't recall seeing the 7 fwd set up but clearly our coaches didn't respond too quickly if that was the case
-
Pedo > Dawes
-
Sue, you racy thing you...
-
I don't recall that but its still there for drainage purposes I believe
-
When I played on the ground there were no flashing signs and around 3 people in attendence! I reckon the signs would be right in your eyeline when switching across the ground.
-
I saw deplorable skills and a team that consistently puts itself under extreme pressure by making bad execution errors. As stated if we play like we did yesterday against Geelong and Hawthorn we will get smashed.
-
This is undoubtedly true but the coaches instructions would be go there quickly if there is an opportunity. However it depends on quickness of brain and execution. They are encouraged to 'take the game on'. When you put yourself under pressure and have generally poor skills then games like yesterday is what happens. Opp'n teams know that and bring fierce tackling pressure to us. Our skills usually crumble. We just aren't there yet but I guess that is the way the coaches want us to play. The more games and confidence our players get the less mistakes we will make. Although some with dodgy disposal skills to begin with (like TMac - who also has decision brain fades) clearly make it harder. Matt Jones screaming down the wing in the first quarter and simply turning it over to GC when a demon was well clear on his own just breaks supporters hearts. In fairness to the players trying to 'switch play' its much easier from the stands to see whether someone is clear across the ground. For those that haven't been on the G it falls away quite sharply from the centre square to the boundary so a player on a flank is having to look 'uphill' if they are looking across ground. Some opp'n jumpers are also harder to see against the background crowd as well.

It's now clear what the recruiters were thinking with these two.....Stretch played really well yesterday too...
-
Shoulda coulda. If we play like we did today we will get annihilated by Hawthorn and Geelong.
-
Technically that's three OD
-
Which game were you watching?
-
We are clearly set for finals next year after today's brilliant game....
-
Worst decision of the year. Watch the maggots spin that one away....
-
What was with the 50m penalty they awarded and then dragged the player back to the original position?
-
How many times do we try to pinpoint a pass in the corridor and either: fark it up or, put the receiving player under pressure. Harmes took a great mark under enpormous pressure but Tyson should never have attempted to kick it to him. Drives me spare how many times we did that. First quarter clusterf arks were incredible. TMac turnovers, matt Jones missing his target when 3m clear of anybody, Wagner, OMac. Lost cont of the number of times we went into a contest with 3 or 4 players and the ball would pop out to a GC player. Up there with the worst and most frustrating game of football I have seen. Why do they try the impossible instead of gaining territory and kicking down the line? My God some of our players have no brains. Not before time did VdB play a reasonable game. Was very solid today after showing little all year.

Which makes the GC game critical. After that Hawthorn, Port at Adelaide, Carlton at the G and the Cats at Kardina. The Cats we have beaten once from the last 11 games, the Blues once from the last 9 games, Port twice form the last 7 and the Hawks have beaten us the last 13 games. 9 games is a stretch and would bevery good if we could get it beating two of those teams. While we are undoubtedly playing better than recent years our win/loss record is still poor. Our three losses to Essendon and St Kilda have hurt us badly. We haven't beaten anyone inside the eight and if we finish on 7 wins it would be my view that our year has been disappointing. Particulalry when PJ and ROos were aiming for finals.
