PODCAST: Rd 21 vs North Melbourne
Here are my 5 questions for this week's Demonland podcast this evening. 1) With Harry Petty injured, do we bring back in Brodie Grundy? Unless Josh Schache, Ben Brown or Tom McDonald are better options in the forward line? 2) Who makes way for Clayton Oliver if he hopefully returns this week against Carlton? 3) What has happened to James Harmes? He seems to be playing dumb, putrid football. I have been quite frustrated with his performances recently. 4) Praise has to go to our small forwards this week in Kade Chandler, Alex Neal-Bullen and Kozzie Pickett against North Melbourne. They all played very well. Was this one of Alex Neal-Bullen's best ever games for the Demons? 5) Who do we play on Blues star forward Charlie Curnow? Joel Smith? Or do we bring back Adam Tomlinson?

Robbie Flower
I am still hopeful the MCC will eventually erect a statue of Robbie Flower outside the MCG. It would definitely be a fitting tribute!

Harley Reid
I actually think Harley Reid would absolutely LOVE to learn under Christian Petracca, Jack Viney, Clayton Oliver and the rest of our players. I understand he's a Geelong supporter. But still, it would be an awesome apprenticeship to learn from some of the best midfielders in the AFL. Anyway, time will tell what happens later in the year. In Jason Taylor and the MFC recruiting team we trust. 🙏

POSTGAME: Rd 21 vs North Melbourne
Was deeply concerned during the first quarter. Luckily our class rose to the top against the Kangaroos. Definitely a blow losing Harry Petty to injury. Kozzie and Chandler both had great games. Petracca and Viney both wonderful. Max Gawn was huge, as always, against 2 North Melbourne ruckmen as well. Harmes was awful. Just does dumb things which are incredibly frustrating! Anyway, it was a good win in the end by 32 points.

2023 Injury List
Disappointing news. But Tom McDonald should be almost ready to return? Then there's Josh Schache. Or Ben Brown? Otherwise, Brodie Grundy? Either way, there are other forward options.

PREGAME: Rd 21 vs North Melbourne
He got belted a few times against Richmond. Clashed heads with Ivan Soldo. Fell over a few times. But that's footy. Got poked or scratched on the eye in a ruck contest. You could even see the scratch on his eye/face when Max Gawn did a post-game interview. Obviously, AFL is a contact sport and you gotta be tough. But I still consider that "a bit banged up". I wouldn't be feeling the best after the game. Although a win takes away the pain.

What they are saying at Arden Street
I have an Essendon supporter mate who really hates North Melbourne. He used to always say that North Melbourne had so few supporters that they used to bring cardboard cut outs of Trevor Marmalade (the Kangaroos supporting comedian on the old Footy Show on TV) to games so the crowds looked bigger than they actually are! 🤣 Anyway, I just hope that the Demons win down in Tasmania. But I will admit, it would be very handy to get a bit of a percentage booster and win by 10+ goals.

Advice for Getting Signatures Pre-Game
I would just be polite and respectful to any Melbourne players you want signatures from. Hopefully none of them are as grumpy as Garry Lyon used to be! 🤣

Some love and appreciation for Max Gawn
I just thought we need to acknowledge how special a player Max Gawn is for the Melbourne Demons. Our Premiership Captain. His 2nd half against Richmond yesterday was incredible. Check the statistics. They are very impressive! Is he still a sneaky chance of making it into this year's All Australian team in 2023? It should also be noted he is getting close to reaching 200 games for the Demons now (finally)! What an amazing player Max Gawn is. Gotta love big Maxy!

Membership Tally 2023
Today is the "cut off day" for Melbourne Demons memberships I think? I encourage those who haven't signed up yet to do so. A great Birthday or Christmas present is a Melbourne Demons membership. Nevertheless, I understand the detrimental effects of the rise in the cost of living and how expensive memberships are. Fingers crossed we get "close" to 70,000 members? Sadly, I think that tally is just beyond us, for the time being. However, I will reiterate that we need to continue to win MORE Premierships if we ever want to compete with the BIG 4 or 5 Victorian AFL Clubs in Richmond, Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton and Hawthorn. Striving to achieve our objective of 75,000+ members is still a lofty goal set in the MFC Strategic Plan. But it is possible! We just need to keep winning Premierships!

Training Ground?
Very exciting if true?! I guess we will have to wait and see if there is an announcement? I won't be holding my breath though.

Have we officially found our full forward?
I appreciate the history lesson that was mentioned regarding Glenn Swan back in 1972. It's important to be cautious and not get too ahead of ourselves. Time will tell if Harry Petty is a success at full foward. I do remain hopeful like the rest of us! Fingers crossed! 🤞 I think there are two more recent examples we can look at regarding Melbourne defenders becoming forwards. The first being our games record holder and leading goal kicker David Neitz. One of my all-time favourites players is big "Neita"! Who was named both an All Australian Centre Half Back (in 1995) and an All Australian Full Forward (in 2002). The change from the backline to the forwardline in 1996 was definitely seen as a success (kicking 56 goals). I would definitely be inviting David Neitz back to the club to impart some forward wisdom to both Harry Petty and Jacob van Rooyen. The second, more recent example, is Tom McDonald who would definitely be a tremendous help and is still a slight chance to break back into the Demons side once he recuperates from his injury. Tom McDonald was a "pretty good" key defender who transformed himself into a "pretty good" key forward. Anyway, what I am trying to say is Harry Petty has two excellent examples he can emulate and that the "transformation" from key defender to key forward can work. All I ask is that Harry Petty continues to work on his "forward craft" and do lots of extra goal kicking lessons with Mark "Choco" Williams from now on.

Harley Reid
I think whatever happens we just need to have faith in Jason Taylor and the MFC recruiting team. 🙏 The most important thing is getting more super football talent who are elite kicks and excellent decision makers into our side.

PODCAST: Rd 20 vs Richmond
Here are 5 questions that I have for this week's podcast. 1) Was that Harry Petty's best game for the Demons (as a forward)? 2) We would all have to be over the moon with Jake Melksham's form in the team so far? 3) The Brodie Grundy conundrum. What do we do with him? Can we play two ruckman in our team? What level of "forward craft" does Brodie Grundy need to meet so that he can get back into the AFL senior side? 4) Is Jack Viney tougher than his old man Todd Viney? I certainly can't split them. Jack Viney is hard as nails and playing some fabulous football at the moment. 5) What do the Demons need to be cautious of in Alistair Clarkson's "come back" game as coach for the Kangaroos down in Tasmania this coming weekend?

AFL Under 18 Championships 2023
If the Demons take at least 2 or 3 players from the 2023 Under 18 All Australian Team in this year's draft you would be pretty happy with the results. I have faith in Jason Taylor and the MFC recruiting team. Probably the biggest challenge is figuring out the balance of taking pure talent vs need to improve the team.
