whilst he's obviously enjoying his new found fun role..., what leadership is he offering when hes really covering all bets ? just asking? well more than that really. a player like Chip...or even Buddy...whilst fantastic as they are arent necessarily automatically leadership material. Lets not confuse alpha males with role model or leadership qualities

kinda agree with this.. a put up or shut up by stealth

A long term detractor of ol crappy moustache man but he's certainly earned it..as much as my respect for his endevour. Hopefully thats infectious. Dawes I think is about to 'break out' in a fashion. He may well prove his doubters wrong. Cross a gem

How Roos goes about the education of Mister Watts will tell us a lot about how we will eventually go as a team. Everything now is a sort of prequel to the main event. The REAL transformation of the list. Does Roos bash his head against a wall ? Does he mecurially manage to find the magic button and turn Pinocchio into a real boy ? or Watts into a Real man's man footy player ? Some seem confused by many of the comments here. its not so much that he doesnt try, he does. He does put much effort in but to what result. He tries, and tries many of us to the extreme.. What some including myself are saying: anything he does man on man is to no effect. How can you get away with this at AFL level ? maybe its different these days but in my day as a player you were taught to tackle and tackle hard. You were educated that there are many fold reasons for this. 1) a legitimate opportunity to physicially hurt the opposition 2) If done properly it broke their run of play 3) You end up with the ball either by them dispensing it to your advantage or you got the free and not to be slighted or taken lightly 4) your opposition player might get spooked and think twice next time....yes INTIMIDATION !! when ol Jackie tackles does ANY of this transpire ? Thats the beef..simple as

Im really not so sure. And its not saying this just for the sake of it. Flower was in a way a bit of a freak. The kind of player that created space where none existed ( actually Trapper could too ) . Though 5 inches shorter and a probable 15 kg lighter than Watts , Flower would easily out manouvre and hustle Watts. Flower understood his body and how to use it on the footy field. Jack has all but no idea really, not in close quarters. Jack needs space for his skills to shine , and he has many but they get all too easily impacted by the heightened level of play . The harder it got the more Robbie shone. The harder is gets game day the worse Watts looks. I take no pleasure in writing that. Its just what is. We often use the term 'mongrel' when determining whether a player has , or hasnt any real moxie for the game. There is no doubt he has some or he would not be out there but he seems to make little impact on the game, or rather the opposition. An aspect that truly concerns me is that Jack is now 5 seasons in and seems to show no real appetite for the battle. Contrary to some I'd suggest he does indeed try, in his own manner, its just ineffectual. Tackles rarely stick and he doesnt shut down anyones play. His own efforts in offence often go well but theres no real defensive side to his game . Hes as they say a one way runner. Some suggest hed be better off playing basket ball but id disagree on that in so far as at the elite level its a very rough and tumble , no please or thankyou's given type of game. I think he run into the same problems there. He wouldnt impose of himself and in so be found wanting. Even in B Ball smaller players are still able and desire to take on larger ones in the contest with body on body. This is seemingly what jack isnt so keen on, i.e the 'crunch'. This seems odd to me because if you use your body well it actually hurts less to be the instigator as opposed the receiver. I keep saying it...its all between the ears...with Jack And as further to the comparison to a Flower, Robbie ALWAYS had that appetite for the game. 5 seasons in we're still waiting with Jack.

An irony I guess is even basketball at the highest level requires bravado.. Its certainly NOT a non-contact sport.. Very argy bargy Mongrel is mongrel

im coming to suspect youre right, unfortunately

a cautionary offering: VFL performances dont ( often ) equate to AFL some guys are gung ho at the VFL level only to pull up like a pollie at a budget meeting Theres no promises in those figures. Forget the stats...who looks like they own the game at VFL...they can be elevated....no others
-
I think because Laconic is far easier to spell !!
-
fascinating stat that just goes to show whats stats are often worth we lost...only stat that matters

Actually I did

either youre being sarcastic or you actually missed that exact point

Ive done it as have other, compared him in a fashion , to Nick Riewoldt. Now Nick gets a LOT of attention, he takes it all and some. But from time to time he'll let someone know in a fashion. He'll give back niggle and isnt afraid of serious contact. This is EXACTLY what Watts needs to be...ASSERTIVE. if only....its his only missing piece !!!
-
This is the thing...he just doesnt crunch other players...they fling him off, brush him aside....almost contemptuously. Half the thing about tackling, whether the pc here care to acknowledge it is its a chance to legitimately HURT the other side. You crash opposition into the ground, you punnish them for taking too long etc. Its PHYSICAL and if you dont want to play this then dont go out there. JAck Watts IS bruise free footy...hate to say it
-
And you know what Ron...all that criticism would evaporate the minute he ( JW) plays with any real conviction and mongrel. until then a lot of us will be seriously pizzed off with this fella for he has all the attributes but one, the ability to actually use what he has Id say no one has any real ill feeling for the lad, just wish he live up to his ability. He could be anything...he really could. Ironic in a sense...a fella who's name personifies energy is more about potential than kinetic. Maybe hes just too "nice' for this level of footy.

how quaint Meanwhile Bananas are tipped to go up again

btw...how did football sneak into this thread ?? lol

Roos conceded taking Tyson off was a mistake. All of Jack Watts problems exist between his ears ( though some might suggest within his chest )
-
can you ask him ( G) and report back the answer.....we'd all love to know

I like T Mac in the main but his kicking is deplorable and he is whether the many care to admit it or not a major culprit in turnovers. A lot of good work comes undone through this. You wont climb ladders with players that given the opposition a better than even crack. His game attributes arent fully rounded. Good rebound footy occurs when defenders can deliver the ball back into a attacking thrust kind of play. Tommy cant deliver it this way. Its T Mac that ought to be playing the 3rd up defender role not the one he has to date. Garland coming back may ease this but then what does this say.. I simply cant abide players who cant kick. Its football.Footballers need to be able to kick. T Mac game is built around everything else so when this is off the boil he rapidly descends into "not much use" out there, Hes not alone granted. If he cant learn to kick effectively....what is the point. As to the season so far Id say the Carlton game was his best, agreed... not a great deal happening otherwise. Not his best start yet. Yes, hes been asked to fill a slightly different role. He obviously cant

What is being shown by review of this season to date is we are still half a list short of ( real AFL level fighters) in order to be able to take on all comers. And that 2 more draft/trade sessions to go then. We ought o be sponsored by NQR i feel as we have more than our share. Now I concede a certain flippancy in this but the niggling truth is we do actually have about a dozen real players ( not all on park yet ) and we have another dozen worthy and able assistant style players but we are constantly scuttled by the "imposters" and we all know who they are. Theyre like a Hollywood set...Look like the real deal until you look beyond the image. Theres just no substance The FD will fix this and many will be up in arms as their fav players gets shipped off or put on the block. You cant play decent footy with passengers
-
really ?? I reckon ol Alex is far more relable and all round useful than Tommy currently. We often fall into the trap of letting past seasons dictate our ability to be clinical in reviewing players. Mac needs a run in the poos . Hes way off his best. Needs to find it again quick smart or hes going to be another looking for a club come seasons end

Roos has shown a reluctance to panic. He wont rush anyone (Dont think he'll stand for any nonsense either ) Refreshingly different isnt it.

Sometimes you enter a room and immediately think wtf... Maybe some need a room at the gat Easy access to the strip....lol
