Recruiting - where did it all go wrong
as an example, aleer is a target for about 5 different vic clubs and will command significant coin for a player who, thus far, hasn't got much afl experience under his belt it will be interesting to see what his decision is if he still can't crack a very settled gw$ defence for the remainder of 2025

CASEY: Rd 03 vs Geelong VFL
yes, limited minutes, but played full time as an inside mid when he did he's not quick, but he extracts the ball and is a good handballer in traffic the issue is who goes out? our inside mids of oliver, petracca, viney aren't injured - i suppose he might replace sparrow, but he's much more of a pure inside mid than a half-forward who tags the key running back like sparrow from what i saw: fullarton must come in this week - he's really playing the part of a leading key forward sestan is getting better in a new role and is a great kick adams is a good kick but needs to add a fair whack of muscle to his frame to play key back brown's second half was very good with repeat defensive efforts but he is not a very good kick verrall battled away as an undersized ruck johnson works hard in patches, goes missing, and gets his hands to the ball but drops a lot of marks two weeks in a row campbell has not played after half time mentha has pace but runs himself into difficult situations i don't think any of woewodin, billings, howes look like afl-ready players the only thing stopping laurie from being delisted is that he's contracted for next season

Recruiting - where did it all go wrong
hawks have followed our model and they haven't won a premiership doing it as yet once that first clutch of players recruited 2017-2020 were part of a premiership, we had to keep the likes of oliver, petracca, brayshaw, as WELL as still paying significant contracts for may, lever, brown let's see how hawks go with maintaining a red hot recruiting drive in the wake of a premiership it MAY be easier as the tpp has gone up so much and they are an attractive destination; it may not don't forget we came very close to recruiting cerra and houston since 2021, as well as bringing in grundy for a year before working out it wasn't going to work for us recruiting and retention go hand in hand, but often robs peter to pay paul - the recruits we brought in that the op highlighted post-2021 premiership were not highly priced recruits but instead last chance saloon bargain basement types we pivoted our recruiting to focus on the draft; since the premiership we've picked up 6 first round picks in 3 years

NON-MFC: Round 04
and all, bar walker, top 10 picks you've got to get lucky in yr draft year to get a talented kid AND them to be a key position player clipped him in the ear, dragged him down on his shoulder clear free for mine

NON-MFC: Round 04
yes, tis an excellent match to 3/4 time
-
NON-MFC: Round 04
when they're running forward of the ball, gc17 look like a top 4 team to me if they can ever learn to work really hard defensively they're going to be very good crom look so potent too cracking game this; the sort of 4 points that could be the difference between finishing top 4 and 5-10

Time to go Goody?
but no coach coming in is going to want to lose the calibre of those players i'm less concerned about jones as he's four games in, but i'd love to know what choc williams has been 'teaching' the players for the most part, it's very hard to think of a single players whose skills haven't regressed
-
Time to go Goody?
i very much doubt any coach is going to be coming into our club going 'oh, just get rid of two of the best five players, don't worry, i love a long slow rebuild' no chance - any coach who comes in will want to RETAIN our best players, not jettison them
-
Time to go Goody?
they better not be - if we are going the path of getting a new coach, then it has to be a proper process

The Next CEO
That’s the story that’s been going around for several weeks - Watts, Bain, Garlick, but who was the 4th? Stuart Fox also said no, but he’s ex club ceo

PREGAME: Rd 05 vs Essendon
fritsch will be out suspended while houston will get off; fullarton in petty out injured with that knee knock that he had in the first quarter i think; lever in sharp out; lindsay in spargo out; brown in sparrow out; laurie in peptides will tear us a new one - zerrett will have a field day running away from our treacle slow midfield i would be pretty amazed if we make five changes, again, but it really does feel like we need to keep turning it over the ironic thing is that it's the likes of petracca and viney that should have their roles under threat, but they are still better at their roles than anyone who can replace them

CASEY: Rd 03 vs Geelong VFL
very laurie - serviceable as an inside mid at vfl level but not knocking the door down, and will likely never get a chance at that role as primary inside mid at afl level
-
CASEY: Rd 03 vs Geelong VFL
disappointing to lose, but lots to like about fullarton, sestan, bits of aj's game, and bit's of pup brown's game in particular i thought laurie did some good things but some dumb things, and howes gets a lot of the football, turns a lot of it over culley will be interesting to watch as he gets some footy under his belt in 2025

NON-MFC: Round 04
copped 2 will probably get off on appeal
-
CASEY: Rd 03 vs Geelong VFL
fullarton looks like a lock for next week - has 4 half way to half time sestan been very good off half-back and bill laurie deserves a decent go as an inside mid at senior level
-
NON-MFC: Round 04
you literally go through a scanner before you get to the turnstile it's meant to speed up the bag check process, but they clearly don't pick up someone with a weapon strapped to their leg
-
GAMEDAY: Rd 04 vs Geelong
yeah i feel like we're going to cop the mother of all hidings last two games lost by 10 goals, and really gc17 felt like a 15-20 goal loss geelong in geelong is - three games i can think of since 1988 - not a happy hunting ground
-
NON-MFC: Round 04
walsh looks a shadow of his former self, but you can bet he'll still command a pretty penny as a former #1 pick and ostensibly having credits in the bank as a very good player...three years ago kemp is no better than howes imo - very vanilla
