Dean Bailey did not want to play him in his first QB game, but "others" interfered. We all know that it has taken until this year for Jack to finally display the talent we all believed he possessed. [edit] and I do blame Dr. Fluffy for the sacking of Norm Smith ......... he and the rest of his old school tie ilk, for which we are forever stereotyped.

I have never said that and JG can't be blamed for previous ineptitude. While not trying to pump up my own tyres, I did play footy at a reasonably high level. We had a bloke at our club who found it very difficult to crack a senior game. He was a very consistent reserve grade player and was universally loved and respected around the club. Back in the days when you had 19th and 20th men sitting on the bench, the coach saw fit to pick him in the 1st 18 in a game where we were playing the top side. In the previous 4 games, that side had won by an aggregate of 350 points. The boys were rapt that our team mate was elevated for his first senior game of the year. We knocked off the top side that week. At least half of our team had only known the bloke I speak of for 2 years tops; many knew him for less time. But everyone at the club knew what he stood for and that he was part of the heart and soul of the club. Again, some things in footy clubs transcend the game itself at times - not always, but at times.

Your brand of common sense may not be common Billy. By the way, did I indicate a round in which I thought he should play? Looks like we have to agree to disagree, but as I keep saying, some things in footy clubs are greater than the game itself. When he does play, I, like I suspect like most others, I will be cheering him loudly.

Didn't know you had such an intimate knowledge of the inner sanctum of the MFC. As I said, we will not make finals this year and there are intangible things which exist within footy clubs, which transcend the game itself. Such things have been missing at the MFC in recent history. My opinion is Jack Grimes deserves to reach the 100 game milestone.

Well said MB, but to me that is precisely why the club should gift him those 2 games. It is not as if we are going to make finals. Like I said earlier, there is no reason in the world for us to be mercenary in this case. There are certain qualities which should exist within any healthy footy club, which transcend the game itself. [edit] And who knows, his team mates might rise to the occasion around him, to celebrate his loyal service in very troubled times.

He should be given games. We are not in finals calculations, to be realistic. I'd like to think that it is not some form of misguided sentimentality, to still believe that there remains in footy, qualities which transcend the mercenary. Things like loyalty, making sure the club really does stand for something - which we had all but lost a few years ago, ensuring the clubs culture is improved and maintained, that we stick by our mates, and recognise that commitment alone, sometimes should be rewarded. You cannot put a value on such qualities. Give him the games he requires to reach the father/son milestone.

The legacy of the previous administration sits heavily on Jack's shoulders still. To thrust the captaincy upon him at such a young age was never going to help his career. Sadly, it may well be that we will never see his true talent as a result

I think the point is, you seem to have an uncontrollable compulsion to lock horns with any poster who disagrees with you. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and move on Stuie. Winning battles won't necessarily win you the war, in which you always seem to want to engage.

Yes JJC. One of my greatest sources of frustration is exactly what you point out. Our 'gameplan' out of defence seems lacking in this area specifically. Note the Saints on the weekend. They knew they could not totally contain Dangerfield, Selwood and to some extent Motlop - who did have a shocker by his own standards, but the Saints sat on these guys as much as possible, giving their defenders enough time to run and spread out of defence. You have to admire their willingness to throw caution to the wind in this regard, but they moved the ball with speed out of defence, providing enough time for their run out of defence to isolate viable targets. To me this is where we have room for considerable improvement. Our run and carry out of the backline is still is not up to standard.

He went to the filth because his entire family follow them. He thought playing in front of 60K + per week for a club he followed as a kid, was more attractive than what we offered him. Fair enough i suppose, but in my view, he has not been missed and this will be even more evident over the next year or so.

You're not going to win this one SWYL. Using the analogy of your school days is rather odious. Like you, I had similar experiences. But I am reminded of the old 'toughen up kid" "A good clip over the ear never hurt anybody". "Made a man out of me". Well to some, maybe it panned out that way. But maybe, those people would have turned out as strong characters regardless of the 'clip over the ear' For many others it was damaging. Violence has no place and can never be justified. Nor can the inciting of violence or the tacit acceptance of it.
