Gawn on SEN (15/8)
He sure did: "He is finally into his own body. He looks strong. He is marking the ball, he is kicking the ball well. I think it's his opportunity to take it."

They're not allowed to do interviews now?

Seeking a considered opinion about the Weid's game at Casey. (Mods feel free to merge this with the Weid thread once KC and other serious Casey watcher give their view.) How has the Weid's game developed this year at Casey? How's his ruck work...his marking...leading...kicking? Give us the works.

As a Pedo fan for a long time I am happy to say now that Pedo's game is too limited for him to take the spot the Weid should logically have this week. The Weid is superior in the ruck to Pedo, and the Weid has a future. His kicking is as good as, if not better than Hoges who was seriously twitchy against the Swans. Sure the Weid has not set the world on fire goal kicking wise but Hoges is on average good for just over two per game. If the Weid gave us that and offered relief for Gawn in the ruck he will have done his job. He must be given the chance for the next two weeks. While his body may not be ready for big pack marks, he reads it well in the air and his hands as far as I have seen them are clean.

Melbourne and Matthews
I'd forgotten this one: https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/he-ran-into-matthews-and-that-was-the-end-of-him-20180810-p4zwq3.html#comments From The Age this morning. Of course I remember his cowardly attacks on Peter Giles and Steven Smith -jaw breaking blows when his opponents were not looking, and this is another one although it might have been in a contest. Someone in the comments says Matthews might have handed out plenty but he copped plenty as well...that's laughable, no one ever hit so many people so violently behind the play. He is a repulsive human being. That is now is a commentator on such incidents is an indictment on our media.

Changes vs Sydney
Let's hope Hannebery is underdone.

Andrew Gaff
It was a deliberate act unquestionably, but Gaff could not have expected his punch to have such a devastating outcome. When we call this a brain fade we mean a spontaneous yet deliberate act with unintended consequences. That's what this is, and it is out of character. That won't prevent Gaff copping eight weeks as he should, but the character assassination around this is over the top. An otherwise talented ball player has a moment of madness. He is not Barry Hall, or Leigh Mathews for that matter. But what does it do for our recruiting plans if he is realistically in our sights? He is cheapened goods, but playing alongside Angus could be problematic now.

Harley Balic Retires
How much did you read? It clearly states he has spoken out about mental health issues.

Round 23 Fixture Announced
Yeah...I had the brain in neutral there. Forgot about the bye. Thanks for the lack of ridicule RG (and you too SWYL).

Round 23 Fixture Announced
It makes no sense for Carlton-Adelaide to play any time other than Sunday. Neither is finals bound so recovery time is irrelevant. And we end up with a crowd-killing mid-afternoon Sunday time slot just to limit our take at the gate one more time. Melbourne-GWS makes at least as much sense as Port-Essendon for Friday in a football sense. The Bummers could well be grounded by then.

Ruck danger
I watched Scott's free conference. No mention of Melbourne and none of the journos (who sounded like they came from the Geelong Addy) had the wit to ask if Dangerfield's ruck ploy was a tactic worked out before the game for a forward pocket contest, or something he came up with spontaneously. It would be interesting to know if Scott, who goes off like a two bob watch at umpire's decisions he does not like, is a rule bender like his cheats J Selwood and now Dangerfield. What I do know is J Selwood cheats and Dangerfield cheats and both congratulate themselves when their con succeeds. I'd love to think we get another chance at them in the finals at a real football ground but I fear that moment has passed.
- Last chance for Kennedy-Harris?

Match Preview and Team Selection - Round 17
Always nervous about the Dogs as they have a good record against us in recent times. With losses this week to spur them they are a threat even without Bont. We should win comfortably but that's why I am nervous. As to another debutant? No thanks. I can't remember who was calling for Petty's selection but that was clearly misguided and left us with a far too inexperienced defence. Happy to see Lewis rested for Vince if that comes about and Hannan for Stretch but that's about it.

Round 12 Non-MFC
The Lions were incredibly disappointing. Set themselves up to break through the Don's defences so many times and messed it up with lousy skills. Both sides stank. Both are better than they showed but that was a horrible game to watch and suggests it's a long way back for the pair of them. Hoping the Saints hang on to Richo into next year. Don't like him and don't rate him. Relied for far too long on a few old blokes who repeatedly finished us off. I'd like to enjoy knocking them off consistently to square up, so hang on Richo!

Fat Ed wants QB as a Collingwood home game.
Peter Jackson pointed out that as the Tigers have Anzac Eve as their home game next year, if we lost QB in 2019 we'd have no blockbuster. That might hint that we'd be willing to begin alternating home games for QB from 2020 so that we have at last one blockbuster each year. On the matter of clubs that lost players to the services which Dockett raised, I think it was the book Fallen Heroes that recorded that Melbourne and St Kilda were the two clubs that lost the greatest number.

Talking Dees on the Monday Night Footy Shows (28/5)
Carey is absolutely right. But for the first quarter and the first few minute of the last quarter Adelaide were lamentable. We also need to remember that no team can hold its best form for an entire season (although Essendon in 2000 had the almost perfect season), so we will drop off at stages. To consolidate we really need to knock over the Bulldogs this week. Lid back on.

Ha ha - some truth in that.

Wallace Urges Adelaide to Target Lever
So comical this. At one point when the ball ran over the boundary line a Crow elbowed Lever as he was returning to his position. Lever just smiled to himself and kept going. It was almost as though he enjoyed the recognition.

Heart of the Country Game
None of us like the idea of selling games but the way the club embraced the Heart of the Country concept yesterday made me proud. Translating the song, wearing the indigenous guernsey a week early, the exchange of tributes before the game were symbolically powerful. True, the locals seemed to favour the Crows though not entirely. And the sponsor would have been rapt with Daisy's 20 minute travelogue with BT on Seven. Then there are the health initiatives the club has started like the program against glaucoma which began a few years back (when Jim was still with us, I think). The result aside I think we might have to continue with this game, make it a real statement.
