Losing a $3M annual profit from gaming means the capital needed to replace it has to be in the order of $30 - $60M.!! I’m thinking there will have to be an announcement of a new training base for the club paid for by the AFL to just allow us to break even. And then there still remains the question of on going revenue to allow us to support the side financially into the future.

make sure Razor Ray isn't the umpire
-
Rance manned up and made ineffective, Martin played the last quarter in the forward pocket or on the bench, Reiwoldt well held. ......and Adelaide without Crouch, Douglas and an injured Sloane and Talia. Toiyges lucky it was only a 6 goal loss.

Match Preview and Team Selection - Round 1
george_on_the_outer replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
.....after all the previous posts, LT has hit the nail on the head! My guess is Bernie goes to Ablett, leaving Selwood all on his own in the middle. Tyson is no loss as his turnovers will kill against Geelong. He can get away with it against lower sides, who can't hurt on the rebound, but this mob can. Best of all, is that when the likes of Brayshaw have their wisdom teeth out during the week, that we can afford to rest him due to the new found depth on our list. -
Dees or Saints: Who breaks the drought first?
george_on_the_outer replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
While no source other than "insiders" at the club are attributed, the article gives some honest insights into the Jack Watts situation. The pity is the article doesn't speak of the gulf of talent at the two clubs. The poor old Saints have no mids other than Ross and Stevens, a couple of second rate rucks, one of whom is injured, and a backline of rejects from other clubs like Carlisle and Brown. Still a good read regardless. -
The seating options aren't great at the Gabba, due to all the reserved areas. We are in section 4 and usually by 1/4 time there are plenty of seats around us...... Deb Willder and the QLD Demons might have a preferred area, so try contact them: [email protected] or their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/QldDemons Deb has already told me they are planning events at the Pineapple Hotel, which is only 250m from the ground. Always a great event, especially if we win. She should be able to give you the lastest update.

New Kennel for Luke Dahlhaus?

Exactly right Ding! Forget the Free agency players who are always expensive, there is far more quality to be had by trading as we did to get Lever. -

How in the hell does closing a car park stop vehicular terrorist attacks when the crowd is inside the stadium? Time to shut down Moomba, the Grand Final parade, the car park at Flemington or even Punt road most mornings since there are too many cars parked on it.

Post Match Discussion: JLT #2 vs St. Kilda
george_on_the_outer replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
There will be more of the long bomb scenario utilized to overcome the Richmond manic forward press that them and others will try this season. North used it effectively in the first half against the Toiyges in their JLT game because it leaves those pressing stranded, and your own team with numbers downfield. And remember these are practice games. It gave us the opportunity to see what Fritsch, Garlett and Bugg the opportunity to show what they could do when Hogan was in a contested situation. It won't be used all the time, but you have to try it out when 4 points isn't at stake. -
Post Match Discussion: JLT #2 vs St. Kilda
george_on_the_outer replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
While the 3rd quarter "looked" bad from our perspective, it was a practice match, and we were trying different set-ups that were not used in the first half: * mid-field changed to Salem, Hannan, Maynard.....Jones and Tyson moved to wings and off the bench to allow the youngsters time. Remember we were 5 goals up and cruising. When we needed to press the pedal in the last, we did by putting the better options back in the middle. * Max played the whole game with Pedo as a chop out when needed. The Saints ran Hickey for the whole of the 1st half against him, and then brought Marshall on for the 2nd half as a completely fresh ruck. No wonder he cramped at the end, and we couldn't get our hands on the ball in the 3rd. * Oscar left the field with back problems and Frost replaced him. Suddenly Bruce and McCartin start marking the ball. Once Frost found his feet they stopped kicking goals. -
The end of the season is shaping up to a percentage battle between us and Brisbane. ....and that's assuming we win all remaining games or by some miracle Brisbane lose to Collingwood or GWS. Carlton is our biggest hope of bridging the gap and we have to do it in a big way, as we are 10% behind them. Fingers crossed, but like the mens side in 2017 we have let slip the opportunity to determine our own fate.

AFLW: Rnd 4 vs Pies in Alice
george_on_the_outer replied to Lucifers Hero's topic in AFLW Melbourne Demons
Not really surprised with the result. A six day break after travelling to Perth and then having to play in 37 degree heat! No wonder the girls had nothing left in the tank. Fixturing was appalling and time of match was even worse. Anybody knows you don't go to central Australia in summer.....except obviously the AFL. -

Are we ready for 580 Brownlow votes?
george_on_the_outer replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
First game of the season and god has returned to the fold. Our home game, and the G will be packed to the rafters with the riff raff from down the road, living in hope that all will be good again. This single game may well define our season. Beat Geelong with the 3 amigo's playing, and the competition will take notice. And PJ will be more than happy with the gate takings.... -

Article quietly hidden in the Financial review: http://www.afr.com/business/sport/the-afl-propped-up-gold-coast-suns-with-25m-after-sponsorship-woes-20180201-h0s15t While most clubs get $10-15M from the AFL each year, this is an absolute disgrace for an enterprise that simply will NOT work. How would an extra $10M go at any other club? There are no fans in the back blocks of the Gold Coast, and the list of failed sporting teams from that area is long. Can't get sponsors....there is a reason for that.....businesses can see value in promotion through sport, but they can also see that money would be wasted with this venture.... How well would a Tasmanian team go if the AFL threw in $25 M toward their operating costs? And then provide ambassadorships to leading players on top of their salary cap?

Runners no longer required at AFL level. The interchange with 90 rotations is sufficient to get the messages out there i.e about 1 rotation occurs each minute....more than sufficient. Mike up the water boys to shout at the players from behind the boundary if needed. If you have ever had to be a runner, it is a frightening job trying to get to a player during play, especially as they get beyond the junior ranks. The ball moves so quickly and you cannot get "in the way". You can't enter the 50 while either side is kicking for goal. Chasing fit young players to get a message to them is bad enough. We already see them scrambling to "get out of the way" at the AFL level. And the Maxwell situation shows how they can exploit the placements on the field. Get rid of them for the big boys.

The other thing which will come into play is the increase in the salary cap for everyone of around $2M. It was effective from June 2017, but contracts would have already been signed for the 2017 year, so the can of worms opens in 2018: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-06-20/players-get-20-per-cent-pay-rise-in-new-cba If you have a quality young list you will be able to pay them to stay with the extra money. If you don't....then you go shopping.
