No. By the time the 2008 draft came around Cyril Rioli was, as you point out, a premiership player with Hawthorn. Cyril was actually taken in the 2007 draft and it’s debatable that he was “clearly” the best in his draft which produced Brownlow Medal winners Trent Cotchin and Patrick Dangerfield and the likes of Alex Rance and Harry Taylor. Still, given that we took Cale Morton that year, if we all had the benefit of hindsight, we might well have burned the place down ? but that’s the thing about drafting. As per the previous posts, a rookie spot is all that would be required to secure Bennell so Geelong could reach the same deal as the one suggested. In fact, a sign that Melbourne might be edging closer to such a deal could be the upgrading of a current rookie to the primary list.

Essentially, this is what is being suggested that Melbourne wants to do with Bennell by having him agree to train with the club with a view to selecting him as a pre-season supplemental selection in March 2020 in the same way as we took Jay Lockhart as a rookie in March this year. Obviously, as part of the deal, he would have to reach the club’s required standards of fitness and conduct in that time.

Why is that a negative? There was a kick in it in our round 22 game and we were operating at about 60% rat power. With a reasonable list that translates to a 5 or 6 goal win.

The club already has Aaron Nietschke recovering from an ACL but, as we’ve seen, there have been plenty of players who have recovered from early knee reconstructions to play good footy at the highest level. Question is how his recovery has gone and how good can he be? I suppose at pick 97 or whatever the number turns out to be, he probably wouldn’t be too great a risk if the medicals show he has recovered physically.

In this interview with Rex Hunt, former Richmond and Collingwood big man David Cloke says that he was meant to come to Melbourne at the same time the club traded in Peter Moore and Kelvin Templeton. I was meant to go to Melbourne Having Cloke at the club at that time might have helped speed up the improvement from a basket case in the early 80s to a finalist at the end of that decade but I suspect it wouldn’t have done much for the ethos of the club at the time. Another thing about the Clokes is that early in the interview, he talks about how he and his brother Peter came from Hughesdale in Richmond’s local zone but I believe that Peter actually played in a few intraclub practice games with Melbourne before he started at the Tigers.

I’ll go for some Sams. Sam Murray seems very committed to atoning for his past and to getting himself fit for the fray. I wasn’t initially keen on him but he’s saying and doing the right things. Sam Gray would fit a need as a goal kicking smallish forward if he decides to leave Port (or they delist him). If we can find a tall (7 foot) agile American basketballer (from the land of Uncle Sam) who could be taught to play our game a la Mason Cox, then perhaps as a Category B.

According to this article - How many picks will your club use in the 2019 draft? - “AFL.com.au has found there is likely to be a minimum of 62 picks and a maximum of 74 picks in the national draft.” That means that by the time the draft comes around, pick 97 will not really exist and our last pick will be in the early 70s if in fact we use it at all in the draft. We could use the selection as a rookie upgrade if the club decides to go down that path. Therefore, I wouldn’t concern myself with #97 at this stage.
