I know how you feel. I bumped into Wayne Johnston (who I have known since he played his first game of VFL) recently and he expressed an interest in perhaps helping out with some training sessions for my grandson’s junior footy team. The next couple of seasons are going to present a number of new challenges to recruiters. How to catch up with what's been lost during Covid19 in 2020? If we take this year's Under 18s in Victoria, there would be numerous players who recruiters have not been able to keeps tabs on because they simply have been unseen unless invited to combines. This filters down to this year's bottom agers and younger players who have been developing in all aspects and many potential high level players would be virtually unknown to drafters. I know of players in NAB Cup Under 17 squads for 2021 who are there basically because of what they did in 2019. There would be many among their peers who have in the interim grown and matured physically and mentally at the same time who might deserve recognition and inclusion into squads but might not get the opportunity for training and further improvement because they've become part of the Covid backlog.

The interesting thing from my perspective is that the club has chosen three Victorians who played very little football this year so we’re comparing players from interstate with exposed Under 18 form to exposed Victorian Under 17 form. The theory is that there’s more upside with these players in terms of added development. Naturally, only time will tell.

Is there any danger about getting the show on the road?

Really inconceivable that this issue hasn’t been properly resolved and the AFL is allowing it to persist to draft day. This is because without certainty as to who is responsible for Treloar’s payments and in which amounts, you can’t possibly arrive a club’s total player payments. In those circumstances, it should be that the clubs involved should not be able to take part in the draft because they might exceed their salary cap once you add payment for players drafted. I seem to recall being told in the past that the idea of list lodgement dates in the trading and draft periods was to enable the AFL and the clubs to keep tabs on their salary caps with the AFL having the capacity to prevent breaches from happening. Perhaps I’m wrong and perhaps Collingwood can deal whichever way it likes.

I’ve had a closer look and I would be pretty happy with his result for the MFC. However, I’m interested that he has Adelaide bidding on Reef McInnes and Collingwood not matching the bid. After their troubles over trading, I’m not sure that they would give up a well credentialed draft prospect who is tied to them under the NGA. I think it likely that the Pies would trade picks strategically to cover such a situation.

No joke. Choco took on an aging B Grade amateurs team that was middle of the road in his first season and struggled under the weight of injuries and retirements the following year. The team was unsuccessful but he nurtured a number of players during that season who are going to form the foundation of a very good team in the not too distant future. That’s exactly what development’s about. At the same time he himself learned about a very different community and ultimately about himself. In many ways, I believe he did the same at Werribee. Perhaps, his own development over the past couple of seasons will hold him in good stead at Melbourne?

At the moment it appears that the deadline for nomination has passed and there’s no evidence that he’s nominated or been accepted. Unless otherwise notified, he’s out there and available to be drafted by anyone.
