The thing is - and this is what I don't get - most of the henny penny hand wringers are also over the top happy clappers when we are going well. They just patiently wait for the first sign of trouble so they can revert back to the extreme negativity that they are more comfortable with, then criticise the "apologists" who choose to take a more rational/balanced view rather than flip-flopping from extreme to extreme. They know who they are too.

There was no contradiction at all. Listen to the actual interview, rather than doing a Tom Morris and creating a separate narrative based entirely on the isolated "best culture in 40 years" sound byte. From the 15 min mark onwards, having previously discussed Goodwin rumours, Smith, Oliver... etc, the "isolated behavioral issues/incidents" were specifically addressed within the overall culture discussion. It was literally said in the preceding 30 seconds before the "best in 40 years" statement that everyone has run with was made, so it was not a new admission from Goodwin whatsoever. They also specifically talk about the Oliver trade period situation from the 25 minute mark onwards and how that all played out, so that's not a new admission/contradiction either.

I haven't seen the TV replay so don't know how it came across there, but I commented in joeboy's thread earlier in the week that despite not hitting the scoreboard, the other things you mention are exactly what he WAS doing. Him getting in and amongst it was quite noticeable compared to what I have come to expect from him and it was good to see. A couple of neutrals I had at the game with me observed the same.

We had to go with mids really, given how low our stocks were after trading away Harmes and Jordan, then losing Brayshaw. Not to mention the potential exits of both Oliver & Petracca.

I was at the G and kept a close eye on Fritsch for most of the game. Whilst he was far from his best and didn't trouble the scorers, I was encouraged by him getting a lot more involved in the sleeves up, second & third effort type stuff, rather than his more typical floating around the fringes waiting for someone to get it to him. If he isn't getting points on the board I at least want him putting heat on the opposition defenders so someone else potentially can. To my eye, he did that job pretty well.

Giants average away crowd vs all teams at all venues is just under 24,000. Average at the G vs all teams is 27,000. Average vs us in Melbourne is just 19,000. Crowd today, considering the conditions + GP starting at same time is probably more than would have been expected. Statistically anyway.

An even better option would to be to flip the byes around for the OR teams. GWS had a bye in R2 along with Gold Coast. Hawthorn had a bye in R4 along with Essendon. Why not just have GWS/Hawthorn have their bye together in R2 or R4 and Gold Coast/Essendon play in the other week?
