  2. SESSION DETAILS Saturday 5 August, From 3:30pm Blundstone Arena, Bellerive TAS Gates open at 3:30pm, Enter from the Western Gate FREE ENTRY As the players are on a tight schedule preparing for the game, unfortunately there will be no player signing at the session Please note the training is now from 3:30pm not the original 3:00pm time.
  3. Apparently 3:30 at Blundstone Arena, entry via western gates, according to a post on Facebook. No player signing as they are on a tight schedule.
  4. Marks inside 50 rate is "marks inside forward 50" divided by "inside 50s". Melbourne is ranked a bit lower on that metric than marks inside 50 because of the high number of inside 50s. I have descriptions of many of the fields further down that page, if you're not sure about any of the other fields.

  15. St Kilda still finished with the top 5 players in ground ball gets, but Melbourne had a better spread with 15 players with 4+ compared to 12 St Kilda players.
  16. I have just posted the Stats Files update - we lost the ground ball gets by 8. Melbourne's season average differential is +3.6 (ranked 3rd) but St Kilda's is +4.1 (ranked 1st).

  18. Sorry I should clarify that those figures relate to where we're kicking to when we're going inside 50, but not necessarily resulting in a shot at goal. 19. Yes, that is true! I'd need to look at chains following a stoppage to see the eventual outcome, but yes, you are more likely to score a goal from a shot in the corridor compared to the pocket: Result Corridor Pocket 0-20m 20-35m 35+ 0-20m 20-35m 35+ Goal 79.8 58.3 48.2 53.8 42.3 36.6 Behind 14.6 29.3 37.0 31.9 39.5 39.6 No Score 5.6 12.4 14.8 14.3 18.2 23.7
  20. I missed the boat in the pregame thread to respond to @A F, so I'll respond here. Yes, this is something I have access to. I have looked at the locations of the result of kicks inside 50 and categorised them according to distance (0-20m, 20-35m, 35m+) and corridor v pocket. To determine the corridor, I extend the centre square to the 50m arc and then draw a line from that point to the goal posts. Melbourne has gone to the 'hot spot' (20-35m out in the corridor) about 26% each of the time the last three matches, up from 20% for the season. We are far more likely to go to the hot spot in the third quarter. The last table below shows that you are more likely to turn the ball over kicking to 20+ metres out in the corridor than kicking to the pocket, which is something that @binman has spoken about quite a bit. 21. I know some people dislike the idea of expected scores, however... @ crow_data_sci over on Twitter has posted the raw data from his updated Expected Score model, including roughly 27,000 shots at goal since the beginning of 2021. If anyone is interested in downloading the raw csv file, I have included his tweet at the bottom of this post. This is a better way to look at goal accuracy as it takes into account the estimated difficulty of the shot. The expected score for a particular shot takes into account distance to goal, angle and context (set shot, handball receive, hard ball get, etc). It's only a model and won't be perfect (e.g. it doesn't take into account weather conditions or actual pressure on the player) but it's better than raw accuracy. In the following tables I have looked at average points scored per shot (raw measure of accuracy), average expected score (difficulty), and the difference (improved measure of accuracy), sorted by the difference. While Petracca is comfortable the least accurate player this season for players with 30+ shots, the difficulty of his shots (average expected score) is third hardest (similar to Stringer, Rachele, Martin and Papley). He's still the second least accurate player taking into account difficulty ahead of Jade Gresham, but it does add context to his accuracy. I have included tables for the following: Melbourne players this season; Melbourne overall by round, including the opposition's difference between actual and expected score; Melbourne players since the beginning of 2021; and All players this season.
