The problem with naming these sides is, in my view, we are so literal and archaic with the roles. I don't know if there is such a defined FF or CHF role anymore. I think that Clark will play deeper than a CHF but will have someone (Jamar/Martin) in the sqaure behind him. What does that make Clark? Don't care for labels. Jamar/Martin in the square. Clark leading out from 30m and Watts and Howe pushing up and attracting the footy. Jurrah and a yet-to-be-determined-small to get the fall of the ball around the talls. Jurrah gets free reign again.

This thread is for those to that say 'Martin is in trouble now that Clark is here.' Clark is not a second ruck and may do some rucking in the fwd 50, as you say. But he is not destined for a back-up role to Jamar and he should rarely, if ever, go into the centre bounces. The tought makes me cringe the same way it does for Watts in the centre square. Just trying to get people to explore their thoughts.

Great get, Trident. Fascinating stuff. Freo were deserate to land him as they kept falling over and offering more to Brisbane and obviously the Lions were not happy that Freo were trying to stiff them from the beginning. Never say 'Check, mate' Freo. Because you don't know who you're playing with... We just drank their milkshake!!

Bate has got an uphill battle but it isn't because of a bad work ethic. I think that we should give up on this leading flanker nonsense and leave that to Howe, Watts, and Green. Bate is a liability defensively in the press and, oddly enough, I believe the midfield can hide those deficiencies in the same way Ling has been able to carve a fantastic career on slow wheels and poor agility in the guts. Plus we have a dearth of big bodies in the midfield in 2012 so he has a chance.

He's talking in the abstract. The question doesn't stipulate Melbourne's current situation, only if the position warranted such investment. I would pay that for Sandilands so I say it does.

I hope it is a benefit only used when one of Jamar and Martin are injured in-game. He is a massive investment, and to be thrown into the ruck would be a risk I wouldn't take. I would choose Jamar, Martin, and Gawn before Clark to put in the ruck. I don't want him to spend 5 minutes there.

Considering I am judging him on 2011 I would like you to name the back up rucks in the AFL that are a class above. We are very fortunate to have Martin as a 2nd ruck. He is very good.

I don't think you can have it both ways - either Martin is a back up ruck and a sometimes forward and Clark is a permanent forward, or Clark is a back up ruck and a sometimes forward and Martin is a permanent fwd/back. You have to have a permanent tall forward in there. I vote Clark. I also say he shouldn't ruck.

I would be keen to get the thoughts of Landers over what we have invested in. The last questions surrounds that investment as I have my concerns over those who say that Clark is a back-up ruck/forward - I don't think that position requires such a massive investment.

Pendlebury I believe played the last year of underage footy and excelled, before that it was basketball. It's different for all and I don't think that his background in basketball should be seen as a net negative - it has given him unique attributes that he has used to great effect with the elite in the AFL. How about this for arguing semantics - I never said he would be holding down a key position. I see him as one of the best back-up rucks in the league and a FP that swaps with Jamar. The same role he did so well in 2011.

I realise Cameron is very good at what he does and I really wish you would just take what I say at face value here - I want him to stay, he may not. As for the plural of loan - that was ancient history, but nevertheless relevant.

The possibility of it, yes. If we can can afford him, he stays out of Neeld's way, and he stops getting loans off the club, I would have him in perpetuity, RF. He is very good at what he does and a Demon at heart. But I am just saying that in reality he may not be here in a year's time.

So I cannot compare Martin to Pendlebury because Pendlebury went higher in the draft? Or NikNat because he has a superior skill set? You are attempting to say that he comes from a non-football background and that is decisive in his career as it moves forward. It isn't because Pendlebury has adapted fine. And from what we saw last year, Martin is quite adept at adapting... Add in the old axiom that talls take longer and I have little doubt that Martin can hold down the back-up ruck position very well, and allow Clark to concentrate on becoming a forward target that we so desperately need and have spent so much for.

I didn't say that. I said I would understand if the club decided to get rid of him. I wouldn't tell anyone at the club to get rid of Cameron, but these decisions are not mine to make and the landscape has changed in the past year in all different kinds of ways. It's a possibility RobbieF. A distinct one, whether or not you believe he was close to the end in the days before 186.

I don't want the $700k investment in the ruck. If you are not a dominant ruck like Sandilands it is a massive risk to have such an investment spend a few minutes a qtr letting blokes try to cut you in half. As high a standard as Martin is playing? Martin was a revelation last year as a ruckman who held his own against the best and dominated the rest. And he kicked goals from the ruck. He may not be a natural footy player but neither is Natanui and I know of another footy player who is a basketballer playing footy and he happens to be the best player in the game. And he doesn't lack hardness or aggression.

There is a chance Jack Watts will move further up the ground, perhaps to a wing.' Although it must be said that Neeld was not quoted in that short article.

Ruckmen cannot 'rest' in the backline. You can do what Daniher did with White - play him behind the ball (ugh), but that isn't resting. Having him play on someone would be even worse. Jamar and Martin will rest in the square and Clark will lead out from 30m out. Watts can go where he likes and follow his quite stunning footy brain and Jurrah can feed off of Jamar/Martin and Clark and face the goals when he get his hands on the footy, something very valuable. Green can play on the flank. Remember, if you want a ruck to rest you send him to the bench or the FP, that is it. As an aside, Martin is a fantastic back-up ruck that is Natanui like with athleticism and competitive nature in the square, and he kicks goals and has a great motor. Why do we feel the need to throw him around again?

It could have been worded better but the club can match or even exceed the offer but unlike restricted FA (where if the club chooses to match the offer - the player must stay), unrestricted FA allows the player to go anywhere on any contract.
