The simple reason we may pay some of his contract is because it would free up cap space to spend elsewhere. Could be that we get a better pick in return if we pay some. Just like the trading for him with Collingwood 12 mths ago.

I can't see us keeping him if he wants to go elsewhere I highly doubt we will pay $650k for a player of his caliber to play at Casey as back up for 4 more years, esp if there are clubs enquiring now. If we were to get a pick in the 20s, I'd go for it. Might be low 20s if we contribute, or high 20s if we do not. That was the deal 12 mths ago apparently

This deal is Priority 3 and is not a GFG. I believe any member can get P3. As an introductory offer at the end of the H&A season, it's a great opportunity for the club to generate new members who may become ongoing members If you are Trident or Redleg you get higher priority and a GFG. Iirc, a couple of years ago the AFL stipulated coaching contracts must include a clause that the payout is no more than 6 months, regardless of how long the contract. I might have this incorrect, but the intention was to prevent clubs having to pay out millions when they want to remove a coach where the relationship has soured. Not saying that will happen with us, but if true, goes a long way towards rendering your concerns moot
