  1. [censored] talk to each other, 3 avoidable tackles for holding the ball in a quarter of football is disgusting.
  2. Good by pressure by Sharp to force the mistake. Get in their faces with some manic pressure Demons. It’s North FFS.
  3. For a team that prides itself on contest and defence, we allow way too much uncontested possession.
  4. When you finish 14th and play a very bland brand of football in comparison to the “glamour teams” then the reality is you are not going to be prime time. It’s up to the football department to change that because it will be hurting the bottom line.
  5. Forwards must step up and deliver today, if the roof is closed then there is nowhere to hide. Need to be more efficient or we are just treading water. Cannot take North too lightly.
  6. The difference between Collingwood/ Giants and us in close games is the mindset. Collingwood / Giants are attacking well drilled teams, they go for the win. Goodwin is conservative and tries not to lose. Case in point against Giants last week when that kick in from full back was about to take place. Giants had. W60 sign held up on interchange bench which I can assume is a minute left we need to go for it, which they did and they got the win. Collingwood last night with a minute to go hold up the stop sign, which you assume is to do whatever it takes to slow play down and not give up a goal. Depending on where the ball is and the time left in quarter they manage the game well…… if there is a team that concedes more red time goals than Melbourne I would love to know who they are. These teams are better organised, drilled and disciplined that is why they win the close games more often than not
  7. Maybe Jim Stynes consecutive games record remains intact. Crisp to get suspended for sling tackle. Go on Michael Christian……. I dare you.
  8. Absolutely agree. He is our most accurate set shot for goal and is a very smart forward with great forward craft. With this in mind why are we using him so high up the ground. Aces in their places. We are not playing to his strengths. Have him patrol inside the forward 40 with space to work in one on one by getting the ball in quickly. Having said that he does need to be much better defensively and that part of his game is on him because that’s attitude based not talent based.
  9. Bittersweet day at the G yesterday. Pre game I honestly thought they would be too good for us but post game disappointed to lose. There are quite a lot of green shoots and positives to come out of the game. Great to have Clarrie and Trac back and the performance and contribution of the debutants. It’s only a very small sample size but some problems still exist and frustratingly so. 1/I think we still overuse the ball too much in the wet. 2/ We concede some very soft goals in “red time” 3/ We concede some very soft goals out the back of a contest 4/ We concede too many coast to coast goals We showed yesterday that when we go quickly and directly ie first goal of game, first goal of 3rd 1/4, bang - bang in the 3rd 1/4. Obviously goals from the centre clearance allow this due to the 6/6/6 rule but when we hold our forwards back and give them a chance one out we are extremely dangerous and will score, the talent is there. Our ball movement is still too slow and indirect more often than not. We play with way too much width and allow opposition time to get back and defend. Really hope to see us play with more speed on the ball and directly to give our forwards a better chance on a fast deck at Marvel. I still believe in this group there is plenty of upside but there are problems that still exist that by now we should have found solutions for.
  10. Wearing the Hawthorn home shorts (stomach bug)
  11. Not really, apparently we are playing Giants
  12. He may have to call Jim’s Defibrillators
  13. Agreed. Great to see guys get an opportunity and the depth will hopefully force healthy competition for spots and translate to improved team performance. Hope to see more integrity around selection this year. Reward those at Casey banging down the door and stop selecting guys coming off long injury lay offs that are clearly under done or still not 100%
  14. Bold, aggressive. Dare I say it almost un-Melbourne like and I love it. Signalling a real aggressive intent. Pumped for Round 1 at the best of times but a valve has already been blown on this one. This is peak. Can’t wait to be there. Go You Demons!!!!!
  15. Couldn’t agree more, other than taking the odd ball up or boundary throw in in the forward line I don’t want to see JVR anywhere near the ruck. I mean he only pulled out of our last game with a dodgy back. We are grooming him to be that key forward, let’s leave him there. AJ has to play and for me it would be to replace Turner. Agree also with everything else that you have posted however I would like Lindsay to play. We are going to miss the class and dash of Kozzie, McVee and also AMW who I think was set for a big year. If the weather predicted eventuates I would like us to go small plus we also need to match the Giants foot speed which for me is a big concern.
  16. I’m sure the other car veered into his path and that he was only attempting to smother. Hope the driver of the other car was OK.
  17. I think AJ will be that guy. I reckon Melbourne supporters will love him and opposition supporters hate him. He gives me Nathan Carroll vibes and I like it.
  18. Bowey for Howes was my thinking (who also hasn’t set the world on fire so far). I want us to load up in the front half and be more attacking. I think we can get them with clearance and inside 50’s but we need to get value for our entries. If we play a territory game I want Chandler and Henderson down there to crumb and exert forward pressure. We need to get value for our entries. Although both debutants AJ and Henderson know each others game pretty well.
  19. I like this team. Think we need to go small and quick to match the Giants and if the forecast rain eventuates. I would though start Henderson and have Bowey as sub. I think Bowey needs message sent, has been poor since his injury.
  20. The zone has a place and is an effective method of defence. My issue is that when you play teams that are very efficient in their disposal and pierce your zone by chipping through it we are very slow to change our method. It also relies on tackling pressure from your forwards and we have too many passengers in our forward line when it comes to defensive pressure. Finally when you do force a turnover it is a golden opportunity to go quickly and direct into your forward line to beat the opposition flood and give your forwards time and space which something else we don’t do often enough for mine as we like to be our offence is based around protecting our backline which means hold until we are set up behind the ball. Would love to borrow the philosophy of the great Bill Shankly. Put the ball in / thru the goal and worry about everything else later. I hope to see a more attacking and proactive coaching box this year.
  21. I get where you are coming from but I personally despise the term “defensive forward” . All forwards should be expected to defend when it is their turn. I want manic pressure from all forwards to force that turnover. What I really want though is forwards that know where the big sticks are. We need to find ways to score more. This defence obsession that we have in my opinion is holding us back. Not dismissing the importance of defence at all but as a club over the last few years we have put little to no value in offence and we are going backwards and have done so since our premiership. I hope with the change in coaching personnel comes a change in our philosophy and game style. Time will tell.
  22. Giants foot speed and speed of ball movement is a concern. Must capitalise on silver service from Gawn and dominate clearance. We must also be extremely proactive in looking to score. Goodwin needs to change his mindset from the opposition scoring less than us to that of we will score more than the opposition. If giants pierce our zone easily or open us up then he need to lock down and go one on one and make it ugly quickly. We can’t let the giants get a run on. Looking forward to that walk from the station to the MCG (via the pub) nothing in the world beats it. Go Dees!!!!
  23. Hawthorn premiers and Melbourne 14th. FFS. Behave!!!!!!!
  24. I have high hopes as well. One thing we do know about him is that he will chase and tackle. Standards need to be set on forward pressure and any forward that won’t do it consistently should spend some time at Casey. In a team that employs a zone defence we need players that are prepared to really pressure the ball carrier to force that turnover. If there is a team that concedes more end to end goals than Melbourne I would love know who they are. Would love to see K. Brown given a real opportunity.
