Demons won't win the flag in 2022.
Gawndy the Great replied to Cheap Seats's topic in Melbourne Demons
Sadly our list is not built for the attacking game style. We are butchers by foot and bar a few cannot hit targets or lead into space. -
We got BBB with arthritis in the knee and can manage him good enough. I don’t know all the circumstances behind him going to Freo, but it was a bad time for him and he probably didn’t have the right people around him that had his best interest at heart. He has openly regretted it so maybe that’s enough to have a conversation. At worst it’s a massive upgrade on Weid. I couldn’t imagine him demanding more than 400K/yr so would be a bargain.

You can see how Geelongs small and half forwards push up all the way to the contest and then attack in a wave of half back. It’s the same way Pies sling shot. This is their blueprint I think you need to stop their out number at the contest to have a crack at winning. It’s a modified version of the Richmond game plan.
-
Yeah we did. I hate it enormously.
-
We lack foot skills and are exposed when there is lots of pressure. But we should have chipped a lot more to slow the tempo down at times.
-
We were not humiliated. It was a cracking game, which could have gone either way.
-
We are desperate for a KPF. I’d be prepared to give him another chance to prove himself. Without LJ, a forward line of BBB, hogan and TMac is very enticing. JVR will get his opp as we manage BBB through out the year. Three talls with proper leading patterns will suit our game style and give us high contested marks in the forward line. The tigers had similar issues before they got Lynch.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Wasn’t aware that there was issues between Goodwin and himself? I though he wanted to go back to WA. If he’s out of contract, get him in - it’s an absolute no brainer.
-
Just watching the Doggies games and have seen a few Viney/JJ type tackles applies by the doggies and even they didn’t get the free. I mentioned it earlier on in the week, we just don’t get frees paid (lowest FF this year) I wonder if it has anything to do with being premiers and opposing teams are getting a helping hand.

Need to drop one of Spargo or ANB. Kozzy has given us something over the last month so gets a pass. Give Chandler a go.

Still stinging but with some reflection I have to acknowledge a few things. - The game was probably the best H&A game that has been played all year and perhaps in the past 2-3. It was a scintillating game for neutrals and both sides played a very top brand of football. - in the end it was 7 points. Expected score would probably tell another story , but unless there is some witchery about, everyone is still trying to work how the Pies keep on doing it. - Our system is strong but has pretty obvious weakness. The Pies were able to rise to the occasion and exploit it just enough to get the 4 points. - fitness maybe part of the problem, if our face outs however I think the more pertinent issue is our team defence. We have been in front in all games and teams seem to adjust mid game to counter it. They take more risks, and they seem to keep pulling it off. Some of it is luck, but where there is smoke there is fire. Goody has to address this and the leaders on the ground need to identify it in game and learn how to respond. How good were our responses last year? We haven’t come from behind many times at all this year.

Maybe last year, but not this year. -
Nope. I don’t buy what your having. It’s the business end, 70k plus - motivation and effort is unquestionable. No excuses anymore. We are not good enough to win it this year. Our best is the best crap doesn’t stick either. Because our best against the best isn’t good enough either.

ANB roles is one of defence. He plays a role that allows Trac to roam forward. I’m not sure there is anyone else that can do it. Even when he stuffs it up with the ball, he’s a role player. JJ plays the wing role well, but he’s too slow on the outside and Ed was getting schooled by Sidebottom on the other. I would be very tempted to target one of Spargs and Kozzy for Chandler. They have too often let us down defensively this year. Cannot reward mediocrity. I thought it was the non playing 23 that was supposed to keep us honest.
-
I think we are unbeatable when we get the game on our terms, but we are less than a 50/50 proposition otherwise. Teams that leave a lose defender in our d50 would now be considered bordering on tanking given our fragility when all manned up. So we can expect this for every game left this season. It’s funny, when we are one-on-one in d50 our dream defensive setup doesn’t look as great as it did last year. It has been nullified. Our demise is usually bought on with unrelentless pressure all over the ground, fast and risky ball movement through the corridor. Sydney, Doggies, Geelong and now Collingwood (twice) have done this to us. They take the outside position in the contest, because they can prey on us to cough up a turnover. Sure, it doesn’t always work and when we break stoppage we hurt them. We are in dire need of an adjustment. Is it more pressure from us? Maybe. Is it better execution; sure that would help. I detest Chris Scott, but I applaud his bravery to make such a change to his game plan. And with the other teams in top 4 playing a similar way, makes you wonder if we still have the winning formula.
-
Kozzy should have nailed that goal early in the 3rd. That’s when I knew. Collingwood were just not missing.
-
Pies were sitting off our midfielders all night. Their tactic was to generate turnover here, that’s why we won so much ball and clearance- I think it’s by design. So Oliver had little chance in driving out of stoppage.
-
I find I am far less stressed out losing while live at the game vs watching at tv. I put this 💯 on the commentators. It’s disgusting.
-
Fitness wasn’t the problem tonight. We dominated all the stats bar tackling. This was lost in game plan. We stick to this philosophy of our method beats the opponents. Which gets you through H&A but if the Pies have the one trick. How can you not have a plan A,B &C to take it away from them? We don’t have to alter our method that much.
-
It’s shocking isnt it. It’s not effort. It’s our f50 entry and the lack of forward structure. As much as we all laid into TMac he’s absence is leaving a big gaping hole that is not easily filled. Remember Gawn/LJ were the 3rd tall in this lineup. Not the 2nd. TMac won’t impact this season and Weid is done. Not sure JVR is ip to it just yet. We another tall KPF desperately. And F Me. Who TF is Johnson? Was a performance like JUH 2 weeks back.
-
Good teams will not afford us that luxury. Plain and simple. It’s not back 6 defence that is the issue, It’s pressure at the source and our poor inside 50 pressure. tonight in our f50 pies hB and midfielders would setup attacking side of the contest before we even delivered inside 50. They would then spread hard the moment they win the ball and burn our Small forwards. It’s Incredibly risky, incredibly arrogant but it’s their one trick and they are very good at it. The frustrating thing was it worked time after time. It’s a bit like how our defensive would choke games last year. Teams would fall for it game after game. In time, it’ll be worked out and exposed for the flabby game plan that it is but I suspect it will take an incredibly solid defensive performance to stop it. Not many teams capable and I thought we were one, but clearly not.
-
One thing is certain. The game has changed. Our game style is outdated and we don’t have the ball movement and skill to play an offensive game. We will get picked off next week in the same way but will probably scrape home against a hapless Brisbane outfit. We are not finishing top 4.
-
They were both frees but we weren’t given the same benefit from the umps.
-
Goodwin was outcoached tonight. At the ground it was clear as day in how Pies setup for the sling shot. Goodwin did nothing to counter it. The forward pressure was way off as the just waltz it out and the game looked exactly like it did against the Dogs. This time we don’t have loading to blame.
