Forward 50 connection? It's the gameplan
Gawndy the Great replied to deelusions from afar's topic in Melbourne Demons
When this game plan is coupled with slow ball movement, which to me is also part of the problem, the issues with f50 connection are compounded. There is no space in f50 a lot of the time, because we are moving it slowly from half back and not taking on the corridor. This is also part of the broader plan in 'defending with the ball in hand'. It gives the opposition plenty of time to flood back and take up all the space, giving us no option but to kick it to the forward pocket. This is why i wanted to advocate having Salem / Bowey at HF. Gives us elite distribution by foot in the forward half. Sadly, we all know that none of this will change this year and probably next year either. So just suck it up, grind your teeth, clench your fists all you like...nothing is changing. -
I wonder if the chatter around Geelong is to create some ‘fake’ competition.

Patrick Cripps FREE to play

I heard Loewe was one. Didn’t hear who the others were. The fact that it’s sitting for this long, doesn’t bode very well. I think he is getting off. 10sec after I posted. Decision upheld 🤘 The CYB zinger at work. -
Grundy is a no brainer as long as we don’t pay overs <700K. He is definitely an upgrade on LJ and will be for at least the next 2 years.
-
If the shoe was on the other foot, you know we would demand nothing less than what the Pies dished up. well I know I would. He was an [censored] for saying it - and bought undue attention to himself that left him rattled and ineffective and irrelevant for large parts of the game.
-
You’d think so given how easy the Pies and other corridor teams were able to move it out with ease with our top of square kicks.

You can just start to see the narrative that he should get off developing in the media. -
When comparing to Richmond our form line is crap, but our draw is probably one of the hardest in recent history, so it’s kind of uncharted territory. We lost to the Dogs by 10 and Pies by 7. It quite easy could have been a different story on any other day and we’d be loaded with confidence and be premiership favourites ahead of Geelong. Funny game , 3 goals is all we needed.

Some vision on Couch just shows how one dimensional and safe out ball movement has become forward of centre. Kicking into pockets and not to an outnumber or leading target is killing our ability to generate easy goals. It’s our system and it takes away our dare and makes us too predictable. Compare that against the Cats, Pies and Blues who take the game on and have a wide open f50. In addition to a KPF , we have to either involve Spargo more in the scoring chain or move one of our elite kicks and playmakers into the HF to provide the forward link.

The concussion has sealed his fate. The Blues main argumennt will be he had eyes only for the ball, which can be easily countered by, so why did you jump and raise your elbow? To which the Blues will respond, because the Ball told him to and we always play the ball. P.S. Couldn't be bothered with all the quotation marks and apostrophe's so feel free to goto school on my elite level of grammar on display here. -
Its imperative they move on. So good on them.

COACHES VOTES: Round 21, 2022
Gawndy the Great replied to At the break of Gawn's topic in Melbourne Demons
Whats a bet Oliver will get 3 brownlow votes 😀 -
Yep, use some of the softcap to recruit a forward coach. Goal kicking, leading patterns, when to handball, when not to. Mihocek is a benefactor of fast ball movement, with a relatively open forward half. He is an ok forward. Ill go as far as saying that even Weed would look better in a team with that type of ball movement. JVR just needs time. He is not the answer today, maybe next year, but much more likely to have a bigger impact from 2024+. So we need someone to fill the void. 28-30 yo is the primary target zone because they are most like FA (when out of contract), wont demand top dollar and are mature bodied, meaning they will impact immediately.
-
Hogan has the forward craft and has a high footy IQ. He would demand a defender on him at all times, one that is unlikely to play off him. Couple that with some half decent forward coaching and you'd create an abundance of space in the F50 for which we would have BBB, Fritta and TMac all benefiting. To me its clear that we need a hard bodied competitor in the forward line. Hogan is probably gettable, comes at a reasonable price and would have immediate impact. He should be looked at.

Monday's usually game review and a light session is it not?

Granted Pies defensive strength, however their midfield game is quite poor (as the stats will tell you) hence why we got inside 50 so many times. We wont have that same luxury next 2 weeks. i agree on the Pies game being an outlier - more so the score rather than our game as we actually played well. Their game is so unsustainable on so many levels. You would expect that they will get found out in the next month. Geelong on the other hand look formidable. To dismantle the Saints without Blicavs, Danger & Selwood is being underplayed big time. I think they will win this year and do it comfortably.

Nothing is certain. We should beat the Blues given their starting 22 issues atm, but they will come and come at us hard. Brisbane is 50/50 in my view and will be a tough slog. Really hard to get a read on the players confidence, but it would have taken a beating on Friday night. I see us going 1-1 and finishing 5th. We are walking the same path as the Doggies did last year. Late drop in form, crappy tail-end fixture/draw.... Bevo found a way to galvanize the group and get them to September. Hopefully the coaching group can do the same.
-
The Doggies are one that are in dire need. Straight swap Thommo <> Naughton 😮. In all seriousness, he is probably a 3rd round pick. Or maybe consider having a crack at Brucey? I'd watch him closely over the next 2 games, to see whether his body can keep going.
-
Cripps will not get off. Will be 2 weeks minimum - there is plenty of precedent here, he left the ground and made head high contact. Be weary of the wounded animal in Carlton. They are a little underseige atm with injures and form. I'd look at Hunt to neutralize Saad off HB to limit their ball movement. May to McKay and Petty to Curnow. I'd expect Silvangi to play a defensive job on Lever, but otherwise those matchups are pretty even-steven. Oliver will probably go head-to-head with Kennedy and get Harmes to do a run-with on Walsh.
-
We need some tackling presence in our forward line. Kozzy, Spargs and co just dont have 'it' this year. Hunt? Chandler? Viney? Harmes? We need to change something.
-
I constantly harass the call in shows with this, never get through on the phone or sms read out. I’m thinking ill have to say something else to try and get through. But I figure nobody wants to hear it. I am so pssd that we wouldn’t boo the umps or anything. I was the only person in Q49 screaming my lungs out on Friday night and would cop it from the other 1000 Pies fans sitting around me. That was the most disappointing thing of the entire night (next to loosing of course) Where is our voice? Where are our fans? The umps get away with it because we are accepting of it.
-
Is that a higher or lower priority than winning a premiership?
-
There is a known partying culture at the Dogs - I wonder whether that has anything to do with it.
-
I think we have seen enough to disarm Geelongs plan - similar to Pies. You guessed it, unrelenting pressure all over the ground with a sprinkle of defensive jobs and hard tags. . whether we can execute is another matter. Next two weeks will give us a real look into the attitude and commitment.
