Ben Brown - third forward & back-up ruck
I feel he’s long been a quality straight line runner but don’t think he has the capacity to be 360 in the guts. He is capable of second efforts but I fear he would get danced all over by anyone with skill and left looking silly. If he’s fit and good to go, play him to his strengths as a hit up leading target. Good bulk, strong hands and a decent read of ball in flight. If he’s on the park and we have players like billings and mcadam looking to hit up targets from 50-70 out, let him do what he does best. Rather not try reinvent a guy who’s doing his best to complete the contract he was deservedly offered.

2023 Player Reviews: #2 Jacob van Rooyen
JVR doesn’t seem to just be towing a company line when he talks about rucking. And whilst I hope Fullers pushes his case, I’d rather not see him gifted a place in the side to save JVR when he’s shown no signs of needing it. with Fritsch JVR Pickett and ANB (petty also if fit) as forward line locks, I’d much rather see the remaining forward spots go to whoever is playing the best football. And with mcadam, billings, chandler, spargo, BBB and the draftees all strongly in the mix, competition for spots is too hot to be gifting a position based on the 10-20% game time which has already serviceably been covered.

Forgive my ignorance but when I think BM, my brain gets stuck on Brent Moloney and Bruce McAvaney. No clue who you mean. Surely not Brock McLean either 🤔

Who will be the Judd McVee of 24?
On a bit of a lateral take on the initial question, I’m going with Van Rooyen. I think everyone agrees that he had a great first year but as far as impact on 2024 I feel there’s great scope to improve. I feel he had plenty of forgivable first year moments that will slip away as he becomes accustomed to the requirements and we are in for an astounding ride watching the incline ahead. Is it round one yet? Can the afl bring in a round minus 8 next year? Round zero simply isn’t low enough

2023 Player Reviews: #15 Ed Langdon
Would love to see him given his wing back. Let him patrol that outer wing, all day long and grind his opponent out of the game. Far from past his prime, still has a big part to play

2023 Player Reviews: #2 Jacob van Rooyen
Very good accuracy, averaged over 2 tackles a game, one season in and straight into my fave players. I hope the hit on Mcstay in the final is out of his system and the sting of missing the Carlton game has him driven to play clean for his career ahead. Plenty of opportunities for him to tactfully impact with his strength and hardness. Looking forward to watching him build his goal (and assist) tallies and the manner in which he gets it all done.

Moves the Club Should Make in 2024
These guys are all capable of winning spots but each has strong competition and would need to put forth a great preseason to get the crack. Turner has to outperform Tomlinson Hore Tmac and Adams. (Smith too but yknow). Would love to see him be the best option, would mean good things going forward. Melkshams role was not only being a marking option but negating tall interceptors. The thought of Laurie contending against anyone in a marking contest doesn’t fill me with hope. I still fear for Jefferson not being given the space to perform the way he excels, even at Casey level. His junior highlights saw him kicking goals from creating space and working into it. There was marks too but I don’t remember towering pack marks. Hope he gets an opportunity to cook like he owns the kitchen, even if others have seniority.

How did you become a Demon?
My father chose the dees in their successful era (in amongst a Richmond supporting family) but I have two older brothers collingwood and Richmond. I grew up without access to a television so would pick between whichever two teams featured on the Saturday radio broadcast each week. After barracking for every team at various points I settled on Carlton early nineties. But their cheating to win a flag burnt me and I didn’t follow a team for a long time after. But when Jimmy put out a plea I jumped on the demon wagon and rode through the lows. Unless they burn me like Carlton (or the Aussie cricket team) I’m here for life.

Ruck depth
Not seeing hore named in the rookies selected on the afl site from today. Just melk and brown. Maybe he’s to be an ssp later in the piece? Either way, I predict us putting someone on the LTI list (or retiring) before mid season if we need an experienced ruck to steady the ship. Plenty of well enough credentialed/developed giants out there who’d love a Cinderella’s night at the ball, even if only for a few games

Prediction Time
Curtin and Wilson is gut feel. death riding the eagles would be fun (but nerve racking) so a future first would be tempting but I’d rather the security of curtin for a decade. Wilson is the slide with it being a coin toss with Tholstrop. Wilson will get some great structural learnings from nibbler and Langdon about how Melbourne will want to use his run. If Watson and/or Leake slide to our respective picks I’ll be very excited for next year.

Welcome Back to Demonland Marty Hore
Don’t mind it as a rookie spot. With hibberd gone there’s a chance he gets some games in a horses for courses selection. But hoping any other rookies added are midfield grunt so the vfl team still functions

Max Promises Tough Love this Preseason
Personally I see the tough love line as a nice diffuser on the Goodwin interview. They carried on afterwards that goody didn’t reach out to smith (he interviewed the morning after returning back from overseas, understandable to still be p’d off) happy max is personable enough to not ignore media. He wasn’t alone on the ledge for missed shots in finals, and I’m sure he’s open to receiving it back. Plenty of talk this preseason please dees. Professional words and advice to build each other up further. And action to show you’ve heard and respected it. Never forget Aaron vandenBergs contribution to the flag.

2023 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch
I like him too but think pick 11 is overs. I’d expect if we were into him we would be auctioning the pick to slide back to somewhere that he’s still on the board, and improve our hand next year. Although such a move would negate the price paid during trade period to get to pick 11 in the first place.

2023 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch
In all I’ve taken in (mostly from Cal Twomey and the like) we seem to be sitting in the bottom of the first two batches. top 6 of Reid duursma and mcKercher, curtin watson and sanders then next grouping is caddy Leake o Sullivan Windsor and Wilson. If all is out of our control and we walk away with Sanders and Wilson then we’ve done alright. Nothing wrong with either pick and both should work out fine. But to me it just feels too vanilla (off topic:very underrated flavour) I just have the feeling sanders isn’t a good Melbourne fit and will get the James Jordan treatment of waiting for something to go wrong with our all star centre square squad, none of which are close to finished. If there isn’t a slider presented to us then personally I’d prefer Leake or O Sullivan at 6. Might be a stretch but I see both as better needs picks and would rather choose for list balance than for top end talent.

Best 44
Can someone please dm me (if it’s to be left publicly unspoken) on a reason Werridee has listed Oliver as suspended? I try to keep on top of all the news and this is the first I’m reading of it. Call me naive if you must but I don’t agree that omission of detail is directly aligned to categoric fact.

Phantom Drafts 2023
Can’t believe the amount of counter hype on curtin. The question I debate with mates is, would you accept a future first from wce for 6 if curtin was there? Can’t see them rising from bottom 4. But I like the kid enough to just take him.

Phantom Drafts 2023
It seems most phantoms have north passing on curtin and hawks grabbing him. Given they have McCabe coming in as a f/s, Im holding onto a little hope that he slides to us (although I see this as a major hole for north and them needing him more than anyone)
-
Can we still use pick 42?
Gold Coast have 3 players and 6 picks before it, so it will be 39. (Dogs haven’t any picks before it to be eaten up for Croft) edit: hawks have f/s in McCabe but all picks used for it are after 42

Nick Watson
Reid mcKercher duursma will all be off the board. Either Watson, curtin or sanders falls to us and I thank freo for putting us in such a position. Whichever way it falls, we will be a better club with any of these on our list. Up to our development team to make the other clubs look silly.

Jack Ginnivan
Missed the first two rounds this year, Afl imposed suspension. Not a rumour, he clearly admitted it. He’s a big time no.

Welcome to Demonland: Tom Fullarton
Reading that he’s a tall forward who was a basketball guard instantly reminds me of jack watts. Does anyone know what his range is like? Can he hit shots from beyond the arc? Very happy with the addition. Fits the list profile well. Hope he grows into his niche and amasses a good career at the dees. As an aside, if Tom does present well enough, does JVR go higher up the ground in ‘24 and beyond? I like him closer to goal and pack marking/splitting but maybe having that presence will improve our forward connection.
