He led the league through two horror years of covid that ended with dees as premiers. For that alone he deserves our gratitude and thanks for a job well done.

My reference to known form was to Maxie, not Weid.
-
Are we mishandling Weid? For some reason he is never the prime target as BBB is and other times gets displaced by Maxie or dogga. Is it time for Weid to be given the chance one out against his defender and become the main target? Now that he has played to his known form, maybe Maxie could use a rest. We don't want to overuse him.

+1. Has learnt from dogga how to play as a midfielder.

Finally we have come to this. We play our own game and let the oppos worry. Hallelujah!

I am not so sanguine with this win. What should have been a large victory became a hard slog. No way to develop good habits and a ruthless streak Five goals in a single burst in Q2 and then 5 goals for the rest of the game? Only two scoring shots more than the powerless from many more forward entries? No reliable forward entry method without BBB? Playing wide with numerous uncontested possessions in an attempt to spread us and defeat our more direct game did not succeed for them because it ruined their game even more. But other more competent teams may try it as well with success. Nine days recovery might be the tonic we need. GO GOODY GO DEES

Called public in the UK because they were all founded as church based schools (there being no government schools until the late 19C) that also took in students from the "public" ie. they were not exclusively church members and were open to the public. The same nomenclature was used here with the APS (associated public schools) whereas what are now called public schools were known as state schools and until recently there seemed to be no confusion. I suspect that the change came as a result of state schools in NSW being called public schools and that usage being adopted for the whole of Australia (similar to "minor premiers" which was exclusively used for rugby league going back decades). Private schools is a better description but for those of us who grew up with the public/state system it is hard to adjust. BTW until at least the early 60s the APS athletics competition was televised on the ABC as a major sporting event and even until the 80s the original pre 50s high schools (Melbourne, University, Northcote, Camberwell, Brighton) would hold a fairly high standard footy competition that attracted many future VFL players to the schools eg. Garry Lyon (I think).

Isn't their endurance the reason we recruited both in the same year?

It's a long season. Just warming up to hit peak when it is needed. Can't play prelim final standard every week and dogga is now pulling his weight.

A 31 to 14 free kick count should be ringing alarm bells and flashing red lights for the AFL. If the game is being adjudicated correctly in accordance with the latest iteration of the rules then lopsided free kick counts should be neither possible nor acceptable. It is a blot on our great game. Unless the swannies are suffering such a lopsided count most weeks, and there is some technical issue with how they play, then the only inference that can be drawn is that the game is not being adjudicated correctly in accordance with the latest iteration of the rules. We need to know why and how this situation can be fixed. Now.

Hi back.
-
It's a long season - 22 games and hopefully minimum two finals. Pace yourself Maxie. No need to expend too much energy being dominant all year. I recall the lions had a ruckman who took the whole year to come good and then starred in three flags. That's all I expect. For those old enough to remember Gabbo took the whole season to lose weight and get fit. So long as the dees keep wining then the finals will be like another season. GO GOODY GO DEES

Excellent anticipation, quick hands, accurate passing and great vision. Complete player in his position. At this rate he will be the best specialist half back since Brett Lovett and the best redhead since Bluey Adams.

Unless another team has a Max Gawn to share the load, Luke is not going anywhere as a franchise player. He's not ready yet. Luke will develop slowly and nicely with us until he finds his best position and role. Let's leave him alone and not indulge in these wild speculations.

In the GF ANB,at least twice in the 4Q, ran up to players after a goal was scored to give advice/instructions/boost etc as a leader would and they acknowledged his actions. Has always been value. Why the club asked him to consider his options at the end of 2020 is hard to fathom but maybe there were other unknown trades that could have been made if he left. Who knows? But there seemed to be no hesitation to keep him on the list in 2021.

Multiple top 2 picks might not be enough. He has so much potential. I believe that we may need to implement a campaign based on the old doggies "keep Chris Grant the the club" by asking 10 year old kids to write in to him. He wouldn't be able to resist. Would he?
-
Several years ago ANB discovered the short attacking pass and became a more valuable player. Whilst his running ability is properly lauded it is his ability to use the ball to advantage that makes him so good. I now expect each kick to be deliberate and damaging, a skill that is now being adopted by Spargo in the forward line and by Jake Bowey in the backline. Instead of counting possessions and metres gained, I watch for their clever little "dinky" passes to advantage. GO GOODY GO DEES

How important is luck in influencing a result?
tiers replied to La Dee-vina Comedia's topic in Melbourne Demons
What is often mistaken for luck is taking full advantage of favourable situations eg. a ball bounce, an unexpected kick off the ground, being in the right position when a mistake is made by the opposition and many other scenarios. Potentially fortunate situations occur frequently, but only those who are alert to the chance and are able to take advantage are considered lucky. -
We are 30+ year members (Mr and Mrs) and have not yet received an email but know that it will come. Rather than an afternoon tea with other old fuddie duddie members, we would prefer to attend a couple of training sessions where we could meet and talk casually and informally to the players like when they held open training sessions in mid season. I recall one at Prahran and another in East Malvern. Preferable to a phone call or an online video call that puts unnecessary pressure on the players and coaches. They were fun and the kids (grandkids) could run around and meet the players. Jack Watts was a favourite. In any event, success is it's own reward for long term supporters like us and, personally, we want and need no more. GO GOODY GO DEES

Three cases. Three errant decisions. And sadly, our Neita is on the panel. The AFL must appeal to overturn each decision or the rules will mean nothing and there will be no precedents. Can you believe using a Reiwoldt mark as a defence and Sloane using his own former eye problems as a defence? Ludricous reasoning by all concerned. Robinson was standing still and was hit by a head. Is there not a duty of care owed by the owner of the head to the player?

Apart from Salem and Lever the replacements are like for like. Not to worry as long as May is there to direct traffic.

I attended the 1964 grand final so I have 57 years of misery to expunge from my memory. I also remember the lost years of 61, 62 and 63. Easy wins by large margins to win a flag helps.

Let's be careful where this might end.

It is time for this "digital" assassination phase to end. Private recordings of unsuspecting and off the record comments, no matter how unpleasant, should remain private. So long as the victim performs their public duty responsibly and professionally what their private thoughts are is irrelevant. If leaked, then the leaker should be found and hounded. The victim should be counseled to be more careful and to not trust anyone but that is all. We are all entitled to our private thoughts and expressions otherwise the world becomes a madhouse with malicious leakers seeking to destroy reputations and careers without any accountability.
