Demonland Player of the Year - Round 14
titan_uranus replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
6 - Sylvia 5 - Watts 4 - Sellar 3 - MacDonald 2 - Blease 1 - Howe Don't know which game you were watching. The one I saw today featured an enthusiastic Sellar who played quite well at CHB, I thought. -
Agree on all points. I'm a big fan of Bail, but he shouldn't have played today, and gave us nothing. I've never liked Dunn, I've rarely liked Bate, and for the 10000th time, I feel ridiculously resigned to their failure as AFL players, and I am sick of seeing them get games. Get them out of there. We know they aren't good enough, they aren't going to make it. I don't care who plays instead. MacDonald has been good, I agree. So has Sellar. Really liked Sellar today.

It's a bad thread, but the point is valid. Spencer was terrible today. Clearly if we had Jamar/Gawn we wouldn't be in this situation, but Spencer doesn't represent good depth, or depth at all, as I do not see him as being capable of playing AFL football. It's disappointing on two levels, since he's been on the list for, what, 5 years now? And has gone nowhere?
-
Ignoring contractual statuses: Bate, Dunn, Spencer, Bennell, Jetta, Morton, Green and Moloney ought all be in danger.
-
Terrible quarter. Too many players are giving nothing. I really thought these kind of performances were behind us, I thought the last month since the Carlton game had shown that we'd progressed beyond this. I'm done with Bate and Dunn, Spencer has gone nowhere in 5 years (who's fault is that? I don't know. But he's gone nowhere at all) and Moloney is a waste. Let's take a look at Davis and/or Cook, let's give Morton the rest of the year to show himself, let's give Gysberts a game, maybe Bennell to try his hand for the rest of the year too. No benefit from playing these four spuds.
-
Some terrible calls here. Magner has been good. Not his fault we keep kicking it to him when he's playing as a defensive forward. Bail is also well up to AFL standard. Nicholson hasn't been bad today. I'll pay Bate, Dunn, Spencer and Moloney though.
-
There is so much dead wood in this side. Bate, Dunn, Spencer and Moloney are all useless and are giving us absolutely nothing. I'd have them all out of the side if it were up to me. The Rivers/Garland forward combo is OK but without Clark it's been shown to be far, far less effective and it's not really doing a lot for us.
-
We shouldn't be 13 points down, we dominated the play for probably 80% of the quarter. They kicked 3 goals in about 2 minutes early, and 2 goals in about 2 minutes late. We missed easy shots and wasted too many inside 50s, a result of having a half-assed forward line. Garland and Rivers are OK, but function much better as 2 and 3, not as 1 and 2. Don't know if it was stubbornness from Neeld, but Watts should never have been on Brown.

Blease out? WTF?!

Good call admin.

On one hand I look at the fixture and think to myself that there is an option there to win almost every game, maybe save just the Adelaide one. On the other hand, I think about how bad we have been at times this year, and think to myself that we can feasibly lose all these games. Our best chance is surely Gold Coast at the G, more so than GWS this week because I feel like GWS is gelling as a team really well, whereas GC is falling apart. Non-development team games, I think our best bets are North, St Kilda and Fremantle at Etihad. I don't think we'll beat anyone except GWS and GC, but I didn't think we'd beat Essendon.

I still love how if you even dare to think that a Melbourne player did something wrong, you are soft and you are an advocate for soft football. It's just hilarious, really. Apparently either you love watching players squib contests, or you love watching players act recklessly and thoughtlessly, and there's no middle ground. I love how Tapscott wants to hurt his opponents, and I love that he tried to stand up to Collingwood. There are better ways to do it, though, than pushing a defenceless player into the interchange bench when the ball is dead. You've said a lot of stupid stuff RR, but maybe this one takes the cake. Your logic - since the Scott brothers were tough/strong/physically imposing/threatening/whatever, and Riewoldt is less so, and that they pushed him around when he broke his shoulder, they won premierships. Well then. Tapscott pushed Maxwell into the boundary. How many premierships has Tapscott won? And Maxwell? Oh...wait. Bull. Geelong is/was not a pack of Cs. Nor was Essendon in 2000. Nor was Collingwood in 2010.

He's injured. He has to be. He isn't showing the acceleration or leap that he displayed last year.

According to the majority of people on this thread, if you don't like seeing opposition players getting injured, you're weak. You're also an advocate for soft football if you ever dare think that a Melbourne player has crossed the line with their aggression. Before everyone jumps down my throat, yes, I love seeing Melbourne players rough up opposition players, and none more so than Collingwood players. I'd rather have players like Tapscott and Moloney than Morton and Bennell. But there is a difference between aggression and stupidity. I don't think Tapscott's bump on Fasolo was stupid (it was reckless, sure, but not stupid). But I think pushing Maxwell into the bench was just stupid and there was no need for it. I don't think it symbolised a strong team, I don't see how that is required in order for a team to avoid being deemed 'soft'. Bumps in the play, strong tackles (even the occasional sling tackle), double-teaming players, pushing them at stoppages, all that kind of stuff, I love, and Tapscott brings all that. But pushing a player out of play into the fence is just dumb. I maintain that if the exact same thing had been done by Maxwell to Tapscott, many here would be whinging and demanding he be suspended.

We're not. When did I say that? I'm sure you wouldn't condone a Melbourne player punching someone in the head, right? Therefore, there is conduct which isn't allowable on a football field. So there is a line to be drawn somewhere between conduct which is good, aggressive, intimidating football, and plain thuggery. In my opinion, pushing a player into a bench once he's out of play goes across that line. -

I'm all for toughness, so don't try saying I'm not. I can't wait for Scully to show up here in two weeks and for Moloney/Jamar/Sylvia/anyone to make him earn every single kick. Tapscott, though, went beyond mere toughness and into the realm of just stupidity, moreso with the push over the boundary line which was just uncalled for. The bump/punch, I can take that, but there was no justification for the Maxwell one. I'm fairly convinced you would hate a Collingwood player if they did that to us. -
Unbelievable. Does the club know how much we hate the trumpeter? Surely they do. It's cringeworthy, embarrassing, downright stupid, and just disliked generally. Get rid of it. A marching band is just pathetic.

Out: Green In: Bail Give us some more run off half back and get rid of a man whose career is coming to an unfortunately swift end.

People who think Tapscott's bump on Fasolo and then push of Maxwell into our bench were 'tough' or 'passionate' or whatnot, are fools. They were both crude, and if a Collingwood player had done that to one of our players, we'd all be screaming for his head. Tapscott's bump on Fasolo was late and unwarranted. Pushing Maxwell into our bench well after he'd gone out of bounds was just ridiculous. There's passion and intensity, but then there's just misplaced thuggery. Utter rubbish. He was fine. -
Oh no, I don't know what this is referring to and it scares me. What happened?

Some good things today, but a hell of a lot of crap, which should hopefully re-inforce to those who got a bit worked up after the win, that we are a long way off it, still. Morton, Nicholson and Jamar turned the ball over so many times today I lost count. Blease looks fantastic but does the same thing every time he gets the ball (which is to grab it and run. Sometimes it works, and it's great. Sometimes he gets caught). Really like his run though. Don't know why Rivers went forward, but it looked OK. Clark was great again; Green not so much. Grimes in the middle was great too. -
Final team: In: Frawley Out: MacDonald Emergencies are Bate, Davey and MacDonald.

Franklin, Pendlebury, Ablett.

Don't think Adelaide is winnable. Despite it being here, they're a really good side this year. Don't think we can knock them off. NM and St K are 'winnable', but we all know how badly we play against NM, and by the time we get to St K again, they'll probably be fighting for their finals spot and might have a bit too much to play for.

Oh no, not again...
