The 2014 AFL National Draft
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
It was well known that at U18s level the team were told just to kick it to where he was. He never actually learned to hunt the ball or read the play. -
Players to target at the end of the year
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to JackVineyForPresident's topic in Melbourne Demons
I cannot understand the basis for this, Viney is progressing well but Wines and McRae are well ahead. -
Bernie Vince V's Dom Tyson
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Bring-Back-Powell's topic in Melbourne Demons
Vince has been good most weeks and been serviceable when not. Tyson has mainly been in our best three players or had no impact at all which is expected of one so young who has had tags on occasion. Tyson has had the bigger impact for mine. -

In an acceptance that the way I look at football has seriously changed I was more excited by Rileys massive tackle on Wines. Agree both goals were great to watch though. -
Players to target at the end of the year
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to JackVineyForPresident's topic in Melbourne Demons
I recall an explosive forward come midfield juggernaut that our recruiting manager at the time told me was the most competitive beast he had ever seen after we picked him up with our first round pick……. -
Aidan Riley - I like what I see

Reminds me of Brad Sewell. Will be a great asset with another preseason. -

I am not saying don't play them next match or forward if form allows. I just think their match was very typical of their careers to date. -

I am not having a go just wondering what you see. He had 10 touches at 40% efficiency, kicked one excellent goal which was the only time he used his speed offensively or defensively that I recall. He lost a couple of crucial contests. I think he deserves another game against Brisbane but his performance would want to be improved on today to get more games passed that. -

Why? -
Watts first game of the year when he played as a mid was the most complete and consistent I have seen him play. Does anyone actually understand why he has not played the same role at any other point of the year? In my eyes he is clearly not a forward, he is a playmaker off halfback or midfield. The whole way he plays changes and as do we forward and through the midfield because he makes things happen and not only makes effective and correct decisions but makes them quickly.

Why do you say that? Blease ran at 40% efficiency today. Terlich and Tapscott aren't exactly a like for like. I would say for us to become a really good team none of those 4 will be in our best 22. -

Blease and Tapscott did exactly what they have always done. They did not do much but Tapscott had one moment where he played with elite hardness and Blease had one moment that showed elite pace. We then hang onto these moments thinking they can consistently use these facets and become good players ignoring they were but moments of the game. -

Watts proved today why he is one of the most talked about and most frustrating player in the league. I would play him half back for the rest of the year. It is clearly his best position and we look so much better for it. Playing there he is forced to be actively engaged and he is better for it. Worst thing that happens is he gets negated by a defensive forward. -

I understand you point but this to me is the attitude that needs to go. Was it better than a 10 goal loss? Of course. But I am sick of competitive losses. It is not good enough. We need to start winning games when they are there to be won. -

Because Jones occasionally falls into bad habits and tries to do too much rather than take the best option. -

We had our typical 15-20 minute patch of low intensity where we leaked goals. We played excellent clean balanced football to get back into it and then over thought the game and gave them every opportunity to finish us off. That loss hurts because the way we finished with poor decisions and execution by senior players is so predictable its not funny. Great to see Tyson back in form and Jetta have another great game but that was the extent of it for me. -
Typical MFC response that frees cost us the game. A 20 minute period that lacked intensity and some shocking errors when the game was there to win cost us.

Jack Grimes not AFL standard
-
Our issue is we do not have a champion who drags you over the line. We are too scared to win games.
-
I am not a McKenzie (DE62.5%) fan but his job is to quell Boak and he is doing this well. Viney's (DE45.5%) and Tysons (DE57.1%) jobs are to win contested ball and create. Is the right one being criticised here?

It was not a squib he just didn't go as low or as hard. Unfortunately that is about as much as I think you can expect from him.

Not saying I love it but the sub was never about injury rate. It was to remove the disadvantage a team had if they lost a player early in a game. -

Both had more ball and laid a combined 11 tackles to 0 from Jones. If you don't get what gets players a game this season by now you never will.
