POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 4
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Dom looks like he is labouring. He had been playing lower minutes in the first 3 rounds. He spent a lot of the last quarter at half forward. He seems one step off with his disposal. If he clicks into gear it will make a massive difference. -
When has Grimes ever played at any level as a defensive small forward? If we dont go with a ruck/forward to replace Kent it will be someone who plays the same role in Bail or another runner.
-
On previous evidence I am unsure if he is a natural forward. He is an elite mark but he previously did not work hard enough defensively nor have the running patterns or multiple leads that you need as a third forward. Just like others though this can be developed. I will be amazed if other clubs are throwing that money at him.
-
The four teams you mention only one is in Victoria and that will be the main driver I suspect and not chasing success. I really hope Shiel was watching last nights game. Its important we land one of Shiel, Treloar or Hoskin Elliott as they all have the dash and skill we lack through our midfield.
-
Just like he is sounding out his worth I assume we are too. I am more than happy if this is later in the year so we can see how consistent his output is and whether this is back or forward or other.

POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 4
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
I think Hardwick is the worst coach in the AFL. He tries to be too smart for his own good. At one point when they were getting their hands on the ball last night they were playing a 4 man forward line with an 8 man back half. His press conference where he said that was the worst effort he can recall and they were insipid is the upteenth time I have seen him say that. Guess what Damien its your job to get them up so how about taking some responsibility. -
I was surprised to see Howe had 655m gained last night. That is massive. The back 6 have great trust in each other to halve or win the contest and rarely go three up or draw their man into a contest. They will be tested well in the next 3 weeks and will be great to see how they go.
-
I seriously doubt we will go in against Fremantle without an actual second ruckman. Spot there for Gawn if he performs tomorrow. Grimes likely for Jetta (who Roos said wont play next week) I would think.

POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 4

They were out on their feet in the last with one less player second half. It was clear the last half of the quarter was planned to preserve the lead and not do anything stupid. -
DEMONLAND PLAYER OF THE YEAR - ROUND 4
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
6. Vince 5. Jones 4. Hogan 3. Garland 2. Vandenberg 1. Cross NB: Special mention to Michie who just kept racking it up when he came on. -
Probably 10-12 players more important to us than a serviceable flanker who takes some great hangers. Good to keep him but happy to get overs in picks or players to build our list.
-
Its great to talk about missed shots at goal than no shots at goal. One step at a time for me. You don't just decide to change someones action in season unless there is a major issue you likely do more harm than good.
-
Until we have more mids who can get their hands on the ball 20+ times consistently Cross will continue to be a mainstay in the side. His mature body will be important with Freo, Sydney, Hawthiorn coming up.
-
Disagree. If its fringe player crumber or tall flanker for fringe player midfielder. It will assist the make up of our side.

Who leads the AFL in contesed marks?
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to What's topic in Melbourne Demons
Did anyone else notice it appeared as if he put himself in the centre bounce at one point in the second half? Hate to have some swagger. -
I would be very surprised if Dawes is in the gun. Whilst we would like him Im sure to kick goals and take more more he is in their for his work rate and making a contest to bring it to ground. How many aerial contests did he actually lose yesterday? Watts will be on notice but I doubt will be dropped. Richmond's back up ruck is Griffiths. Unless Gawn or Spencer tear it up today I would just use Dawes sparingly in there for some light relief and accept he is there to halve the contest and that is all. Whilst I like the idea of 3 crumbers none of them are consistent in their output so I would much prefer we take in an extra runner and play the two more likely to see midfield minutes as well. People calling for 3+ changes. They should consider it is not the Roos way Casey play today and the player would need to back up on a Friday. Out Frost and Kent In Michie and next best performed mid from Casey today.
-
The issue with Spencer is he is useless forward. We need Gawn who can be dangerous in both roles.
-
I doubt it.

Adelaide v Melbourne POST MATCH DISCUSSION - ROUND 3

I watched Hogan all through his year at Casey he rarely missed from set shots with that action. Just because he missed a goal and has a weird action the immediate response from people is to change his action. -
Adelaide v Melbourne POST MATCH DISCUSSION - ROUND 3

Both need to be addressed if they continue to be an issue. I would not after 3 games change the way a key forward has kicked for most of his life. Its a watch point nothing more. -
I think we are still playing 2 mids short in the 21. Brayshaw should start. One of JKH or Kent should play as sub. Frost out injured. Just bring in another runner (Michie, Toumpas, Jones or Grimes) and put up with Dawes playing small minutes as ruck relief. Its not like Richmond have two recognised rucks.

Jesse's is mechanics. Jeffy's is mental. It's nice to talk about improving goal kicking now that we have people down there that create opportunities. Dawes is never going to be a good mark but he rarely loses an aerial contest, most of them when he is outnumbered. I think people under rate this facet of his game. -

Adelaide v Melbourne POST MATCH DISCUSSION - ROUND 3

All I want currently is consistent effort and we got that today. When they got back into it I thought we would drop our bundle but we fought it out and if we had taken our chances would have been a chance to win. Watts inconsistency in application and Howes decision making and execution are both a worry. T-Mac, Garlo and Jetta played excellent. H, Jones and Vince worked hard in the midfield but we need to get consistent ball from Tyson, Vanders and Newton who all went missing for large patches. Brayshaw another good cameo and surely deserves a start next week. I don't think we are far off Hogan putting it all together and Garlett kicking straight.
