I'm amazed at all the Newton bashing I've read in the post game threads. He certainly wasn't our worst and he's played less than a dozen games. Posters slaggin him off can do so at their own peril, he'll be a great player for this club.

I disagree. Apart from Yze I thought he was easily our worst. He didn't chase, didn't harass and generally didn't want to go near a contest. He has the attributes to make a very good footballer, but at the moment he needs to adjust himself mentally to the tempo of playing against men.

Not to put my head into a lions mouth with this question or anything........

But when we were all calling for Newton's inclusion in the side last season and there seemed to be an endless and seemingly useless delay in him making his debut, and there were comments made on here at the time that the reason for said delay was not because of his ability (which I think we can all agree he has in spades) or inability to play at AFL level, but because of "attitude" issues. So my question if you got through all of that is, could what we saw on Sunday be a part of that?

Just curious :) !!!

He has to learn that he doesn't have to take mark of the year just mark the ones you should. He got clean hands to the ball a lot yesterday and dropped it. Young can't blame him, he will get better

Absolutely. And his attitude isn't about not caring or not trying, it's as much about confidence and belief - but the end result is the same.

Cheers graz :) ......

Clean hands, no marks. This is the worrying part. Reminds me of Miller as a lead up CHF. Presents well, gives a contest, but mostly drops marks.

Maybe he was following the lead of the senior players.

I don't agree with your Miller comment when playing that role he regularly took around 10 marks a game unfortunately for him our team can't kick and as a lead up player if your team can't kick you will struggle.

I too am concerned with the newton bashing. he's played 11 games, came from a long way back, and looked the most dangerous of the forwards in my opinion. The issue for me is why do we have so many one dimensional forwards playing in the one team. once the ball gets to ground robbo, newton and neitz are out of the contest. this was very evident at the dees v kangas pracie match and nothing was learnt.

neitz has gone around a year possibly two years too long (this is not neitz bashing) and is hindering the development of Newton, he is the future, leave him alone and focus your energies on those who have 50 games or more of experience.

by the way, i find the green bashing a bit over the top. he often puts his body on the line and i thought should have been given the captaincy (perhaps temporarily) had neitz retired.

Newton will be ok however he is not (and should not) be the number 1 target as he was on the weekend. It's far too much pressure to put on a kid of his experience and abilities. Unfortunately though because of our crap recruiting and list management we're forced to rely on the poor kid.

Newton just didn't quite take the grab about five times on Sunday.

Bad day at the office from that perspective, but I'm willing to accept he's got just ten games behind him.

The second efforts were a worry, sure. But we've seen him do then before - Once he realises that despite the off-season hype and winning 'mark of the year' he's still got to KEEP ON doing the extra efforts that got him into the team in the first place, then he'll be right.

He'd bloody better!

only footage I saw of the game (can't bring myself to watch) was Newton pulling out of a contest.

It may have been a one of but he needs to go harder than he did then - no matter how many games he's played.

Obviously he has taken pointers from David Neitz on how to mark a ball!!!!!!!!!

I have read for a long time, with interest, people calling this guy the next big thing at the Dees.

I am not sure what the fuss is about.

His kicking is average.

His marking is obviously his strength but may be a bit too show-pony. He goes for the fly at every opportunity. He needs to take a chest mark once in a while.

AND HE IS SLOW.

I don't think I have ever seen a slower footballer than him. He was running in slow motion on Sunday evening. I could not believe my eyes. Sadly, I am not sure that it is something that he will ever improve.

Newton makes Neitz look like Carl Lewis and Asafa Powell rolled into one.

Please someone tell me I was seeing things!!

yeah frank you are seeing things. last year at sandy it was his defensive pressure and his marking which was very exciting. not sure if people recall the tackle he laid on chris egan which resulted in egan injuring is knee and missed the rest of the season, at trevor barker oval. i have no problems with his defensive pressure.

it is not up to him to win games. 11 games he's played. i doubt richmond expect pattison to dominate games, i doubt carlton expect hartlett to win games for carlton, tom williams is another from the dogs, all these blokes were taken in the same draft as newton. Franklin and roughead were too, but they were taken in the top 5 and are both freaks.

we are asking too much of him. vent your anger towards the senior blokes. or the leadership group, only jmcdonald can hold his head high out of the 6 or so blokes in there, makes a mockery of the whole idea leadership group. what a joke.
