New leaders dilemma

Featured Replies

There has been an obvious vacuum beyond Gawn and Viney… up until now, and it’s been a serious worry because of aged or inexperienced applicants.

HOWEVER

In the last few weeks, and particularly after yesterday’s game , I have great faith that there’s excellent work being progressed by former Melbourne Storm champion Ryan Hofmann in the leadership development area and a number of younger players have now presented themselves as viable and worthwhile options:

Turner, Chandler, Bowie and even Sparrow ( whose last 2 years have been forgettable ) would all be worthy additions to leadership roles for the next 10 years.

Agree. One might possibly throw in Van Rooyen. Bowie? I was a fan, but he has retired...permanently.

A

Chandler leadership highly regarded within the club. Turner turning into a defensive lynchpin as well. Definitely showing leadership on the field

Love watching multiple players growing into genuine maturity.

Chandler was showing signs last year but now it is noticeable that he responds to intense situations with higher intensity of his own. That's a top-shelf character trait. He has also incrementally improved everything about his game, year on year.

Pickett going in a really good direction as a team leader as well as individual player, too.

I can't see a clear standout as Gawn successor but, hey, 'The Greatest' doesn't happen every week.

All our young guns showing good potential too. I look forward to Captain Kolt in 2033 (when gawn finally retires with 12 all australians and 5 cups)

I would like to see Chandler be given a Vice or Co-Vice captaincy. For one I agree with what you say in that he looks to have a character that will flourish with a leadership role and probably lift his game again as a response, but also, he was absolutely distraught last year when we lost to, I think it was, North. He is obviously invested and gives a hoot.

I heard Checkers being interviewed on Friday. When asked which player surprised him when he arrived at the club he referenced T Sparrow for fantastic off field and on field leadership.

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
