It's been reported he's done a lot of running away from the group this preseason. Interested if this a veteran management thing or a lack of conditioning

He needed it, he was gassed every game. Hope the best for him.

JVR has his left knee bandaged and is with a trainer away from the main group warmups.

Seems fine now has rejoined

When I read these two posts, I visualised it like a Warner Brothers cartoon with JVR as the coyote with his leg in two parts which are subsequently "re-joined" at the knee.

They cycled through 4 different drills.

  • Keeping’s off kicking

  • running handball down the boundary

  • Break from congestion to hit a 2 on 1 forward

  • Breaking from half forward to take pings at goal

Hard to read much in to it. I like Onley’s field kicking. Matthews needs to flatten it out a bit but bombed a goal from 50 no problems. Lindsay kicking well in a lot of drills.

In general the energy was pretty good and skills reasonable.

The Max’s, Laurie, Sharp, AMW doing some light ball movement

CJ, JVR and Matthews doing sprints

Main group split in 3 teams, yellow off to the side doing some small ground stuff, the other 2 teams in a match sim across the middle of the oval

Kossie is on a different level to everyone else even if it doesn’t always end perfectly.

Trelly getting involved too, he loves a cut back in to the corridor kick that sets up scores.

A big contest by Luker draws some praise from Richo

how does reg ( x taylor) look in the match sims? haven’t heard too much

Still looking a bit out of his depth

Struggling to intercept and get his own ball and relying on his teammates but when he does get the ball he his looking to move the ball aggressively

Im a bit worried about trellys tackling strength

Struggling to run down and bring bigger teammates to the ground

Needs work on core and hip strength imo

Lol he’s just been drafted what do you expect?

Red team: Steele busy, Jeffo making an impact with some defensive hands in and getting out the back, Harvey having a bit of a mare

Yellow team: JVR just looks a different player this year, just more comfortable attacking the footy

White v Yellow coming up now

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
